Abstract

The increasing production of hormone estrogen and progesteron during pregnance known as a risk factors of periodontal disease during pregnance. The other risk factor of periodontal disease during pregnance is obesity, because adipose tissue in obesity person produce pro inflamatory cytokines that influence periodontal status. Both of this risk factors could happen in pregnance woman. During pregnancy, production of hormones estrogen, progesteron and the weight is gained. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between weight during pregnance with periodontal status. This research was an observational analytic with crossectional comparative, with 52 sampels. CPI indeks was used to evaluate the periodontal status meanwhile weight during pregnance was measured by GWS IOM. The resulting data were analyzed by chi-square test. There were significantly differences between pregnance weight at trimester 2nd and 3rd with increasing of the Community Periodontal Indeks.

Abstract

Nowadays one of the prime concern in dentistry is on preservation of remaining natural teeth. Many patients require replacement of missing teeth and associated structures to enhance appearance, improve masticatory efficiency, prevent unwanted movement of teeth (overeruption/ drifting), and/ or improve phonetics. Presence of few teeth in oral cavity helps in preserving alveolar ridge integrity, maintain the proprioception, and gives psychological benefit to the patient. This case report presents a case of a 54-years-old female with few remaining teeth, one remaining tooth in maxilla and two remaining teeth in mandible. Patient wants to get her masticatory function and aestethic back with maintain her remaining teeth. Cu-sil denture is one of the simplest removable partial denture that can replace missing teeth where only few teeth remain in oral cavity. A Cu-sil denture is a denture with holes, lined by a gasket, the holes that providing space for remaining natural teeth to emerge into the oral cavity through the denture.

Abstract

Smile is one of the facial expression that are essential in expressing friendliness, agreement, and appreciation. Most patients that come to dentist to have treatment for an attractive smile. One of the component to make an attractive smile is smile arch. Smile arch have been the interest of the orthodontist in recent years. Smile arch is the relationship between a hypothetical curve drawn along the edges of the maxillary anterior teeth and the inner contour of the lower lip in smile. This study was to differ male and female’s smile type base on smile arch. This study was to evaluate of smile type based on smile arch with gender. A total of 31 females and 31 males were selected among criteria inclusion. Photographs taken with digital camera showing the subjects with a posed smile were used for this study and Adobe photoshop used to determine the smile arch. Student Mann Whitney test were used for statistical analysis. The resulting data showed that significantly difference (p<0,05) between smile arch and gender. The most common female’s smile are parallel smile (64.5) and male’s smile are straight smile (51.6%). In this study concluded that the curvature of the incisal edge anterior maxilla appears to be more pronounced or parallel for woman than for a men.

Abstract

The most common complaint reported by patients in denture wearing is loose denture, caused by lack of retention. In the complete denture wearing, saliva plays an important role in retention. A well-fitting denture base to supporting tissues and the presence of adequate border seals will provide optimal denture retention. This condition can be achieved if it is supported by adequate volume, flow, and consistency of saliva. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between flow rate and viscosity of saliva with complete denture retention in Andalas Dental Collage and Hospital. This study used a cross sectional design. Thirty patients of complete denture wearers at the Andalas Dental Collage and Hospital were included in this study. Samples were selected through consecutive sampling method. Data were collected by using medical records, saliva viscosity assesstment, salivary flow rate measurement, and complete denture retention examination. Data were analyzed by Mann Whitney tes with p< 0,05. There was a significant relationship between salivary flow rate and maxillary complete denture retention (p= 0,002) and there was a significant relationship between saliva viscosity and maxillary complete denture retention (p= 0,002). However there was no relationship between salivary flow rate and mandibular complete denture retention (p= 0.101) and there was no relationship between saliva viscosity and mandibular complete denture retention (p= 0,223). The conclusion of this study was that the flow rate and viscosity of saliva was associated with maxillary complete denture retention yet was not associated with mandibular denture retention.

Abstract

Complete denture wearers were mostly complained with the uncomfortable and less retention of their denture especially mandibular denture. Alveolar ridge resorption leads to decrease in the size of denture-bearing area, therefore reducing denture retention. There are many factors that cause loss retention, which are closely related to alveolar ridge height. The aim of the study is to determine the relationship between mandibular residual ridge height and complete denture retention in Andalas Dental Collage and Hospital. Methods: This study used a cross sectional design, with total sampel of 30 complete denture wearers. Samples was selected through Consecutive Sampling Method. Data was collected by using medical record, panoramic radiograph, and denture retention examination that were analyzed by Chi-Square test with p<0.05. Results: There was not a significant relationship between mandibular residual ridge height and denture retention (p>0.05). The conclusion of this study was the denture retention is not associated with mandibular residual ridge height in Andalas Dental Collage and Hospital.

Abstract

Stress is the body’s response to various stressors that demand individual adjustment. College students often experience stress during their studies. Excessive stress can interfere the normal function of the body that can trigger the onset of temporomandibular disorder. The study aims to determine the relationship between stress and temporomandibular disorder in Dental Students of Andalas University. This study was observational analytic with the cross sectional design. The respondent was selected through purposive sampling technique with the total respondent were 67 students. The responden’s stress was measured with Student Stress Inventory (SSI) questionnaire, while temporomandibular disorder was examined and determined by RDC/TMD Axis I. The results showed that 37 respondents (55,2%) had mild stress and 30 respondents (44,8%) had moderate stress. The prevalence of temporomandibular disorder was 61,2%. Disc displacement with reduction was the most dominant diagnosis of temporomandibular disorder. Statistical chi-square test results obtained p=0,019 (p<0,05) that meant there was a significant relationship between stress and temporomandibular disorder in Dental Students of Andalas University. The result of this study concluded that there was relationship between stress and temporomandibular disorder.
