Abstract

Curcuma longa (turmeric) is one of the tropical plant belong to Zingiberaceae family. It has beneficialeffects in healing of variety diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of atopical gel formulation of n-hexane fraction of Curcuma longa in the wound healing of hyperglycemic mice.A total of 30 hyperglycemic mice were divided into three groups. They were given topical application, NC asa negative control (gel base), PC as a positive control (Neomycine sulfate 5%), treated groups (HF = n-hexane gel). Histopathological examination of the skin was performed to evaluate the wound healing. Theresult showed that, there were no changes on tha appearance of the gel preparation, physically. Evethoughupon the pH determination of the gel at six month of storage at 40ºC there were significant difference. Theeffect of n-hexane gel, in terms of decreasing the surface area of wound and histopathological characteristicswere significantly (p <0.05) different between the PC group and HF group. Skin irritant test showedneither rashes, swelling, inflammation, redness, irritation, itching nor any other toxicity symptoms followingapplication of the gel. Significant effect of n hexane fraction of C. longa gel on wounds without any adversedermal toxic effects sounds very promising and it may be employed in the management of diabetic wound.

Abstract

The use of antibiotics is one way to reduce the number of deaths in poultry industry. However, use maybe reduced because the impact for consumers. This study aims to find out the effect of the combinationbetween herbal turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val.), Garlic (Allium sativum Linn.) with Zn in the feed tothe number of erythrocyte, hematocrit and hemoglobin in chickens that is infected with Escherichia colibactery. Two hundred head of DOC were divided into 5 treatments and 4 repetitions, each repetitionconsisted of 10 chickens. Ration treatment K0 (basal ration as a healthy chickens), K (negative control)(basal ration chickens infected with Escherichia coli), P1 (basal ration + 1.5% turmeric powder + 180 ppmof ZnO / chickens infected with Escherichia coli), P2 (basal ration + 2.5% garlic powder + 180 ppm of ZnO /chickens infected with Escherichia coli), and K (positive control) (a basal ration + antibiotic / chickensinfected with Escherichia coli). At the age of 3 weeks, all treatment groups were challenged with E. coliwhich treated orally at a dose of 108 CFU/mL. K(+) group was given antibiotics a day after the challenge. Antibiotics are given for 3 days with a dose of medication. Blood sampling performed at the age of 3 weeks(before the challenge), 1 and 2 weeks after the challenge. The blood test includes the number of erythrocytes, hematocrit values and level of hemoglobin . The results showed the number of erythrocytes, hematocritvalues, and level of hemoglobin at treatment P1 (ration basal + 1.5% turmeric powder + 180 ppm of ZnO+ infected with Escherichia coli) tend to be higher than other treatments and have equal outcomes withtreatment K(+) (ration basal + antibiotics + infected with Escherichia coli). From the results of this studyconcluded that the use of combinations of herbs turmeric and Zn in the feed can be used as an alternativeof colibacillosis treatment.

Abstract

Abstract

Larvae Chrysomya bezziana caused myiasis in most livestock in Indonesia. Drugs of choice for treating myasis are synthetic insecticides. Unfortunately the insecticides has negative effect on animal product, killed insect non target and insect resistenst. The research was conducted on the activity of ethanol extract of binahong leaves against various stages of C. bezziana larvae (L1, L2, and L3). Five treatments group tested were: group without any treatment (negative control), groups treated with ethanol extracts of binahong leaves 0.5%, 1%, and 2%, respectively, positive control were given coumaphos. The treatments were applied with five replications. Number of living larvae and pupae, pupae weight and number of imago were observed. The results demonstrated that 0.5% of the extract effective consentration which was able to kill the larvae (L1 and L2). Finally 2% of the extract was the most effective concentration which was able to kill larvae (L3) and decrease the pupae weight. Ethanol extract of binahong leaves was significantly able to reduce the growth of C. bezziana larvae due to contact and digestive effect of the active compounds contained in Anredera cordifolia leaf.

Abstract

Urine crystal is a crystal nucleus which tend to form urine stone. The case of urine stone seems to beincreased every year. Crystallization could induce acute tubular necrosis which impact on renal dysfunction. The signs of this condition are high level of urea, creatinine and decrease glomerulus filtration rate. Theobjective of this research was to evaluate the effects of infusum Persea americana Mill as an inhibitorcrystallization which induced by ethylene glycol on white male rats. 20 male rats were divided into 4groups; K1 as negative group received only distilled water ad libitum, K2 as positive group receiveddistilled water containing ethylene glycol, K3 (dose 5%) and K4 (dose 10%) as treatment groups receivedwater containing ethylene glycol and avocado leaves infusion. Phytochemsitry screening of infusion avocadoleaves consisted of flavonoid, saponin, tanine and quinone. Result of analysis showed that the level ofureum and creatinine on K2 was higher than K3 and K4 group. The increased level could be inhibited byinfusion avocado leaves. The measurement of glomerular filtration rate in treatment groups wassignificantly different (p<0.05). Descriptive histopathology observation showed that renal lesio in grouptreatment (K3 and K4) were declined. Large crystal calcium oxalate on K2 group was observed by usingpolarized microscope, whereas small crystal calcium oxalate were seen in the infusion of avocado leavesgroups. These result showed the ability of infusion of avocado leaves as an inhibitor on the growth ofcrystallization calcium oxalate

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the feed additive (zinc and herbs) in leucocyte profiles, performance, and observe the ability of broiler on E. coli challenge. A total of 160 chickens were dividedinto four groups: Group K-control negativewere given basal diet; Group two were given fed basal, turmeric1.5% + ZnO 180 ppm; Group two were given fed basal, garlic powder 2.5% + Zn0 180 ppm; and group K+ weregiven basal diet and treatment with antibiotics. At the age of three weeks all groups were challenged orallyby inoculation with E.coli at dose of 108CFU/mL. Observed parameters include performance (weight gain, consumption) and total leukocytes. Weight gain, consumption were observed at one to five weeks of age, whereas blood samplings for the examination of leukocytes were performed at week three (pre infection),week four and five (one week and two weeks after infection with E.coli). The results showed that thechicken body weight from age one to three weeks was increased sharply. One week after infection weightloss seemed to be decreased. The largest decrease was observed in the group given the combination ofgarlic-Zn, while providing a combination of curcumin-Zn shows that the weight tends to increase. Rationconsumption showed the same pattern as body weight. The highest consumption at the end of the studywas found in the group given the combination of curcumin - Zn, the lowest was in the garlic-Zn. Highleukocyte cells level at one week post infection, showing an animal in a state of infection and the leucocytedecreasing again at two weeks post infection. The conditions indicate the ability of chickens in eliminatinginfectious agents. These results explain the combination of curcumin-Zn showed the best results comparedwith other treatments. Providing supplementation of curcumin - Zn on chicken improved the ability toeliminate E.coli, leukocyte cell profile, and performance.
