Abstract

The aims of conducting the study are to analyze the types and the structure of endocentric compound found in the novel Betrayal by Danielle Steel. Endocentric compound is type of compound words based on semantics relation between head and modifier. According to Delahunty & Garvey (2010) endocentric is a compound which represents a subtype of whatever the head represents. The source of the data was novel entitled Betrayal written by Danielle Steel and published on July 2012. This study used theory by Carstairs-McCarthy (2002) to analyze the types of endocentric compound based on lexical categories and theory by Lieber (2009) to identify the structure of compound. The study belongs to library research since the data used is a novel. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative qualitative method. This study applied observation method in collecting the data. Based the analysis there are found 71 data of endocentric compounds. They were divided into 60 data of compound noun, 1 data of compound verb and 10 data of compound adjective. The structure of compound presented by using tree diagram and dominantly form by two elements.

Abstract

The study is focused on to find out the types of derivational affixes, the function and the general meaning of each word found in the Instagram Post @poemsporn_. This study is used theory propose by Brinton (2010) and Katamba (1994). The writer used observation procedure method which used before analysing the data. Then, the writer used descriptive-qualitative method. In addition, for presented the data, the writer used an informal method to present the data. This study found there are 34 words that indicated as derivational affixes. The prefixes are 5 words. They consist of prefix (Im-), (a-), (In-), and (Un-). However, there are 29 words that indicated as derivational affixes by adding suffixes (-ing), (-ly), (-ness), (-or), (-ful), (-less), (-ion), (-ance). In addition, for the function of words found are indicated as class changing consist of 33 words, while class maintaining are 2 words. The class changing functions are from verb to noun, adjective to noun, noun to adjective, and adjective to adverb. Meanwhile, the class maintaining function is from adjective to adjective.

Abstract

This study is focused on the temporal deixis of “That’s the Spirit” album by Bring Me the Horizon. In a language an expression that used for pointing person, location, and time is called deixis. Deixis is part of pragmatics that concern with context in language. There are two objectives in this study which are (1) to find out the temporal deixis terms in “That’s the Spirit” album (2) to analyze the context of temporal deixis in “That’s the Spirit” album. The data collection in this study is done by using documentation method and qualitative method is used for explaining the result of the data. The temporal deixis is divided into three terms which are specific time, pure deictic term, and the last is verb tense, those classification has three roles in the language which are for pointing the time of utterance is happened before the utterance or in the past, at the moment or the action happened at the same time with the utterance and the last is the action happened after the utterance or in the future. The result of this has found verb tense with 87.20% of 75 data, then the pure deictic word with 11.63% of 10 data and the last is 1.17% of specific time with 1 data only.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the functions of subordinate clauses in Dracula novel by Bram Stoker. The data of this study were taken from Dracula novel by Bram Stoker. This study focused on analysing the subordinate clause in complex declarative sentences found in Dracula novel by Bram Stoker. The theory used in this research is the theory by Aarts (2001) about types of function of subordinate clause which consist of clause functioning as subject, clause functioning as direct object, clause functioning as adjunct and clause functioning as complement within phrase and supported with theory by Quirk and Sydney’s (1973) theory on their book entitled a University of Grammar. Then, to analyze the functions of subordinate clause the qualitative strategy is used. The result of the research shows that in Dracula novel by Bram Stoker found 194 data and has a complete subordinate clause function. They are clause functioning as subject, clause functioning as direct object, clause functioning as adjunct and clause function as complement within phrase.

Abstract

This goal of this study is to describe the types of directive illocutionary act and to find out the most dominant directives speech act performed by the characters in The Complex: Lockdown movie through the theory of Speech Act by Kreidler (1998) and supported by the theory from Searle (1979). In analyzing the data, descriptive qualitative method is used. This study found 73 data of directive illocutionary act performed by the characters in the movie. In addition, it was found the most dominant directives used is command with 27 (37%) occurences followed by question with 23 (32%) occurences. Both types of directive is the most commonly used because the characters are forced to do a certain task quickly with a limited time to think. That causes they gave command to other and asked question frequently during the emergency situation after several bio-weapon attacks. The least dominant types of directive speech act are found namely; request with 16 (22%) occurences and followed by suggestion with 7 (9%) occurences.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to know the function of derivational affixes and to analyze the word structure of derivational affixes found in HighEnd Magazine. This study focused on the function and the word structure of affixes attached in each word found in HighEnd Magazine. The magazine entitled HighEnd Magazine is used as the data source. In this research the writer used observation method in collecting the data and qualitative method was used to analyze the data. The data were analyzed by using theory from Katamba (1993) and Carstairs and McCarthy (2002). The researcher used formal and informal method to present the result of the analysis. There are 302 words attached by derivational affixes found in HighEnd Magazine. There are two functions of derivational morpheme they are class changing morpheme and class maintaining morpheme.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of derivational affixes forming noun and the functions of derivational affixes forming noun in the novel entitled Firefly Lane written by Kristin Hannah. The methods used in this study are quantitative and qualitative methods. This study used observation method in collecting the data from all chapters in the novel Firefly Lane. Finally, this writing concludes that there were two functions of derivational affixes such are: class changing affixes and class maintaining affixes and each function has two types which are: prefixes and suffixes. The result of the study found there are 3 prefixes forming noun such are: re-, pre-,and pro-, and from suffixes there were found 22 suffixes forming noun, they are: -er, -hood, -ism, -ist, -ity, -ship, -ness, -th, -ize, -less, -ous, -y, -ful, -ive, -ing, -ance, -ence, -ant, -ion, -ment, - or, and –ure.

Abstract

Being a social human, people have a way to express their hopes, which produces a directive illocutionary act. Directive illocutionary acts are a fascinating phenomenon of illocutionary acts. This research used theory from Searle (1979) to find out the dominant three types of directive speech act, Leech theory (1983) about Aspect of Speech theory to analyzed the purpose of directive speech acts. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach to collect data, the data that are founds from the data source were analyzed by using formal and informal method to support the research. According to the findings of this study, there are three types of directive speech acts used by figures in Frozen 2 Movie, they are command (76%), order (11%), request (13%). The three dominant types have quite similar meaning but in this research the researcher try to analyses and find out their differences clearly

Abstract

The study is focused on find out the total amount of symbol (emoji) and the meaning of symbol (emoji) that found in the captions of @brianimanuel Instagram account. This study is used theory proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce about semiotic and used semiosis process. This study took the data from the captions of @brianimanuel in his Instagram Post that used emoji from 27 Sept 2019 – 15 Feb 2021. In this study, the writers used observation procedure descriptive-qualitative method for analyzing the data. In addition, for presented the data, the writer used an informal method. This study found there are 73 total amount of emoji and 73 meaning of symbol (emoji) that found in the 55 captions of @brianimanuel in his Instagram Post.

Abstract

This study expects an investigation of morphological analysis, specifically derivational affixes forming adjectives derived from nouns on Taylor Swift’s twitter account. This study aims to find the types and analyse the morphological process of derivational affixes forming adjectives from nouns. The observation method was used in collecting the data and applied a note-taking technique to collect the data. Meanwhile, descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze and arrange the data qualitatively in order to give description clearly that related to the theory proposed by Katamba (1993) which discusses the types, also the theory from Fromkin et al (2013) to describe the morphological process based on the data that have been found. The result found there are 61 suffixes are used to change nouns become adjectives such as -y, -ful, -less, -ous, -ic, -ial, -al, and also the process of those affixes attach to root and base in forming adjective from noun.
