Abstract

Plaque accumulation on removable denture mayinduce Denture Stomatitis (DS). Candida albicans is the main microorganism that causes DS. To prevent DS, dentures need to be cleaned. The simplest denture cleaning method is immersion using chemicals. Papaya leaf (Carica papaya) contain antifungi substance, could be used as denture cleanser. The aim of this study wasto prove the effectivity of papaya leaf extract todecreasing the number of Candida albicans colonies on acrylic resin plates and thermoplastic nylon. This study was pretest-posttest with control group design, 32 samples (16 acrylic resin plates, 16 thermoplastic nylon plates) were divided into 4 groups: immersion using aquadest, fittydent®, papaya leaf extract 10% and 40%. Paired T-test showed the means of Candida albicans number on acrylic resin plates after immersion of aquadest, fittydent®, papaya leaf extract 10% and 40% were 0.75+2.98 CFU/ml, 82.5+1.29, 53.5+3.31 CFU/ml, 81.5+2.38 CFU/ml. The means of Candida albicans number on thermoplastic nylon after immersion of aquadest, fittydent®, papaya leaf extract 10% and 40% were 0.5+1.73 CFU/ml, 82.25+2.21 CFU/ml, 70.25+3.3 CFU/ml, 80.50+3.69 CFU/ml. Oneway ANOVA test showed no significant differences number of Candida albicans colonies (p >0.05) after immersion using fittydent® and papaya leaf extract 40% on both plates (100% Candida albicans cells died after immersion). The decrease percentage shown in the immersion of papaya leaf extract 10% group (66.67% on acrylic resin plates and 87.8% on thermoplastic nylon). This study concluded that papaya leaf extract was effective in decreasing the number of Candida albicans colonies on acrylic resin plates and thermoplastic nylon.

Abstract

Complete denture wearing patients are often associated with the presence of denture stomatitis. Poor-fitting dentures may increase mucosal trauma. It cause pressure on the mucosa and create a mechanical irritation. Epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG), is a flavonoid class of polyphenols antioxidant that have been widely researched, proven to have anti-inflammatory effects and may improve wound healing. The objective of this study was to prove the potential role of EGCG promoting reepithelialization of oral mucosa woundhealing. The study was a randomized Post Test Only ControlGroup Design experimental study. 32 male rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into 2 treatment groups. The controlgroup were given placebo gel administration (CMC-Na) for 3 days, and the treatment groups were given EGCG Gel 0.5% for 3 days. On the 6th day, mice were euthanized for tissue sampling and histological preparations, made by HE stainning. The data were analyzed using the Independent t-Test.The mean of epithelial cleft oftreatment group (549.25 ± 217.094 µm) was lower than the controlgroup (1417.25 ± 180.572 µm), it was statistically different.EGCG Gel 0.5% increaseproduction of TransformingGrowth Factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) to stimulate migration and adhesion of epithelial cell. Thus, it is concluded that EGCG gel 0.5% enhance reepithelialization on mucosa wound healingof Denture Stomatitis.

Abstract

Acrylic resin dentures are a type of denture that is often used. At present the use of disinfectants to clean dentures from microorganisms, such as sodium hypochlorite and green betle leaves. Sodium hypochlorite contains chlorine, and green betle leaf extract contains tannins that containable to provide color changes in artificial teeth. The purpose of this study was to study the change in color on the hot polymerization acrylic plate after soaking with sodium hypochlorite solution and green betle leaf extract (Piper betle Linn). This study was a pre-post test control group design, the sample was heat-cured resin acrylic base plate and divided into 3 treatment groups: a group immersed in sodium hypochlorite, extract of green betel leaf and control group with aquades. The discoloration measurement was using Spectrophotometer. The sample was immersed for 15 days. Data were analyzed by paired T-test, followed by One way Anova and LSD. The results showed that there were significant color changes in the 2 treatment groups, while the control group was not significant. The mean of discoloration after immersion with Sodium Hypochlorite was 0.668 + 0.018, green betle leaf extract 30% was 0.625 + 0.024, and aquades was 0.534 + 0.0224. Color changes on heat-cured resin acrylic base plate occur by the presence of chlorine in sodium hypochlorite and tannin contained in the green betel leaf extract. This research concluded that immersion of heat-cured resin acrylic plate in sodium hypochlorite solution and 30% betle leaf extract may cause discoloration.

Abstract

Denture stomatitis, the main cause of which is Candida species, especially C.albicans, is an inflammation of the oral mucosa of removable denture users which can be associated with reactions to oral biofilms, denture materials, or trauma due to dentur-es. The use of chemicals as denture cleaners can increase the roughness of the base surface, so that herbal ingredients can be used as alternative denture cleaners. Neem leaves (Azadirachta Indica A. Juss) contain active ingredients that can kill bacte-ria and fungi, in the form of azadirachtin, salannin, meliantriol, and nimbin as well as tannin compounds, saponins, flavonoids and terpenoids which have antifungal mechanisms. This research was aimed to determine the effectiveness of neem leaf extract against C.albicans on acrylic resin denture plates. The sample of this posttest only control group design study consisted of 24 acrylic resin plates contaminated with C.albicans suspension. After that, the samples were immersed in 4 groups of disinfectant solutions, namely 5% EDM, 10% EDM, aquadest and Polident® for 30 minutes. The number of C.albicans colonies was tested by Kruskal Wallis and U Mann Whitney. The results showed that the mean C.albicans colony in the EDM 5%, 10% EDM, aquadest and Polident® groups were 21.50 CFU/mL, 15.50 CFU/mL, 27.50 CFU/mL, 6.50 CFU/mL respectively. Neem leaf extract significantly decreased the number of C.albicans colonies (p <0.005). It was concluded that the higher the EDM con-centration, the greater its ability to reduce the number of C.albicans colonies.
