Abstract

This paper is intended to analyze and describe various pragmatic aspects exploited by humorous discourse creators in creating jocular texts in Indonesian. By assuming that nearly all jokes are created through a non bona fide process of communication, in which cooperative and politeness principles are intentionally violated in various ways, there must be extensive exploitations of pragmatic aspects. The examples are many kinds of speech acts, presupposition, pragmatic implicature, etc. found in Indonesian humorous discourse to create activities. All of these aspects so far have not been seriously studied by Indonesian linguists, especially whose works concern with humorous discourses.Key words: humor, discourse, text, pragmatics.

Abstract

It is obviously misleading to regard that play-on-word activities are unimportant or trivial in human life. In many diverse societies, punning activities have very central roles in rituals as well as in cultural transformation processes. The importance of role played by punning activities attracts me to discuss the functions of language found in Stand Up Comedy, the most recent and popular comedy show broadcasted by Metro TV Station. This television program shows the skillfulness of comedians in telling jokes in front of its audience who are mostly teenagers or adolescents. Joking activities play central roles in human life because of their various functions, especially to criticize various social conditions that happen in the speakers’ community. However, to create unaggressive and constructive criticisms, the comedians build an intimate relation with their audience to create an effective deliverance. Consequently, they use certain moods of interaction using informal language styles which are full of ambiguities that can easily confuse audience’s perceptions about many things. This is, of course, for the sake of eliciting audience’s smiles and laughter. Keywords: stand-up comedy, language play, contextual framing

Abstract

This article is concerned  with the naming practices of Padang restaurants in several cities in Indonesia. The results of the present study show that there are two strategies used by the Padang restaurant’s owners for the naming practices, namely divergence strategy and convergence strategy. The first strategy is carried out by using Minangkabau words, while the second one by using Indonesian words or foreign loan words which are already integrated into Indonesian vocabulary. Semantically the words used as the basis of naming refer to various concepts reflecting values and world views of Minangkabau people.

Abstract

Errors are very natural and even become an important part of learning (Davies, 2000:105). Therefore, there are many scientists who analyze errors to achieve better understanding on how students learn language. Based on the importance of conducting error analysis, this research is developed to analyze errors in the usage of English prepositions as there are still limited number of people who analyze this topic. The data used are utterances produced by third year college students majoring in English. All of the students’ utterances are obtained through interview. The data obtained was then transcribed and analyzed by applying a theory of preposition stated by Collins (1991). The results show that there are 15 prepositions which are used incorrectly in the students’ untterances such as about, among, as, at, because of, by, during, for, from, in, of, on, through, to, and with.

Abstract

This research examines online media related to the cases of Indonesian celebrities using critical discourse analysis approach. It aims to explain the textual strategies used by online media upon reporting the cases. The textual strategy focuses on the selection of certain vocabulary and the use of specific grammar. The data are collected through reading and note taking techniques on news texts in the online media, liputan6.com and kapanlagi.com, with certain topics such as: the divorce of Marshanda, Asmirandah interfaith marriage, and the case of celebrity prostitution. The current descriptive qualitative research employs critical discourse analysis proposed by van Dijk which generally believes that media always contains interests and partisanships. Therefore, they tend to provide positive picture of themselves/groups (positive self-presentation) and negative images about others (negative other-presentation).The picture can be analyzed through the way the media use the diction and build certain sentences inside the news. The result shows that media uses the vocabulary such as mothers who have an affair, women who cannot be emulated, presumptuous women, a liar man, no longer Muslim, etc. when reporting on the case of Marshanda’s divorce and Asmirandah’s interfaith marriage. Furthermore, the researcher finds the use of passivation, abstraction, categorization, identification and anonymity strategies in grammar.

Abstract

This research is an attempt to study politeness issues based on utturances of Osamu Dazai’s short story characters entitled “The courtesy Call”, the English  translation from Japanese “Shinyu Kokan” by Ivan Morris.  By using politeness maxim theory proposed by Leech, it is found that the antagonist  often violates  6 politeness maxims which are tend to obey by the protagonist and his wife. The violation and the obedience of politeness maxims constitute a reflection of character differences intended by the writer. Utterances expressed by Fiction’s characters are a rich source to exploit for studying politeness for pragmatic studies as their creation are based on careful observations of the author toward the world realities.
