Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the anatomical structure and quality of wood from fruit plants. This study was conducted from December 2012 to February 2013. The woods of five fruits species in Padang namely Artocarpus integra (cempedak), Baccaurea motleyana (rambai), Mangifera caesia (binjai), Mangifera foetida (ambacang), and Mangifera odorata (kuweni) were analyzed. The character of vessels, parenchyma, and rays were analyzed by using permanent slide, and fibre dimension by maceration method. The results showed that all of woods in this study have the same type of porous namely difuse and soliter type. The smallest porous was detected at wood of B. motleyana among those species. The parenchyma and rays characters of A. integra and B. motleyana have apotracheal and uniseriate types while M. caesia, M. foetida, and M. odorata have paratracheal and multiseriate types. Wood of B. motleyana has the longest fibre, differed from woods of M. caesia and M. odorata with short fibres. Based on industrial woods that A. integra and B. motleyana were classified in II-III of strength, differed from woods of M. caesia, M. foetida and M. odorata were classified in III-IV of strength. Keywords : anatomical structure, permanent slide, fruits wood, wood quality.

Abstract

The study of Balanophoraceae in West Sumatra has been conducted from January to May 2012. This study used observation and direct collection method at seven locations in West Sumatra and continued in Herbarium Andalas University (ANDA). The result indicated that three spesies of Balanophora (B. elongata, B. indica, and B.dioica) were identified. B. elongata has 9 female individuals, B. indica has 2 male individuals and 1 female individual, B. dioica 1 male individual and 1 female individual. The tuber was significant character to distinguish three studied spesies of Balanophora. B. elongata and B. dioica had a branched tuber but no branched tuber was detected in B. indica. The leaf color and the type of inflorescence were also valuable characters to differ between these species. It was assumed that most of the Balanophora species were found in habitat where the precipitation is 2500-5000 mm/year along mountain rain forest in Sumatra. Keywords: spesies, Balanophora, character, habitat, west sumatra

Abstract

Hornstedtia leonurus is one species of the Hornstedtia’s genera in Alpiniae Tribe (Zingiberaceae). It has unambiguous expressed some aberrations of morphological characters in what Hornstedtia should have. On the contrary, it has with it self some characters from other genera within the tribe of Alpiniae, such as Etlingera and Amomum. The research aimed to find some distorsion on morphological characters of the H. leonurus with its close selected sisters in Alpiniae Tribe (Etlingera megalocheilos and Amomum cardamomum) and determined their were characters relationship by a morphometric study. The materials collected from West Sumatra province (50 Kota, Padang and Sijunjung regency) on September until December 2015. Morphometric analysis used PAST version 2.17c and SPSS computer programs. Morphologically, H. leonurus closely related with E. megalocheilos rather than its sister in Hornstedtia genera (H. schypifera) and A. cardamomum. Keywords: Alpiniae, H. leonurus, morphometric, relationship, Zingiberaceae.
