Abstract

Bruxism is the medical term for the grinding of teeth or the clenching of jaws. Bruxism often occurs during deep sleep or while under stress. No one knows why bruxism happens. But in some cases, kids may grind because the top and bottom teeth are not aligned properly. Others do it as a response to pain, such as an earache. Kids might grind their teeth as a way to ease the pain, just as they might rub a sore muscle. Stress,usually nervous tension or anger is another cause. For instance, a child might worry about a test at school or a change in routine. Some kids who are hyperactive also experience bruxism. And sometimes kids with other medical conditions (such as cerebral palsy) or on certain medications can develop bruxism. The most common solution is usually a recommendation from the mouth guard. Wear a mouth guard at night will prevent the child from grinding their teeth and night, and has a very high success rate in reducing the habit.

Abstract

Dental fluorosis is a health condition caused by a child receiving too much fluoride during tooth development. Excessive fluoride can cause white spots, and in severe cases, brown stains or pitting or mottling of enamel. Dental fluorosis can be cosmetically treated by a dentist. The cost and success can vary significantly depending on the treatment. Tooth bleaching, microabrasion, and conservative composite restorations or porcelain veneers are commonly used treatments. Generally speaking, bleaching and microabrasion are used for superficial staining, whereas the conservative restorations are used for more unaesthetic situations.

Abstract

Adequate amounts of Calcium ions are essential for the developmental of enamel, dentin, and cementum. The delivery of adequate amounts of calcium to the dental tissues during developmental is essentially dependent on the maintenance of normal calcium concentrations in the extracellular fluids. Since the homeostatic mechanisms controlling the extracellular calcium ions concentration are highly efficient, only the most severe forms of calcium deprivation can result inhypocalcification of the dental tissues. Genetic defects or deficiencies of nutrients in addition to calcium may result in the formation of abnormal enamel, dentin or cementum.

Abstract

Pergerakan gigi secara ortodonti diperoleh melalui remodeling tulang alveolar dan jaringan periodontal sebagai respon terhadap adanya gaya ortodonti. Diabetes dapat mempengaruhi remodeling tulang alveolar. Remodeling tulang alveolar meliputi proses resobsi tulang yang diperankan oleh sel osteoklas, serta pembentukan tulang yang diperankan oleh sel osteoblas. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui rasio osteoklas dan osteoblas tulang alveolar pada model tikus diabetes oleh karena aplikasi gaya ortodonti. 24 ekor tikus Wistar dibagi menjadi 6 kelompok yang terdiri dari 3 kelompok kontrol dan 3 kelompok perlakuan diabetes dengan aplikasi gaya ortodonti yang berbeda (10, 20, dan 30 gramforce/grf). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi gaya ortodonti pada model tikus diabetes menyebabkan peningkatan rasio osteoklas dan osteoblas tulang alveolar di daerah tekanan dan tarikan pada ligamen periodontal.

Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes increased from year to year. Diabetic animal model was developed to study the pathogenesis and treatment in diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the profile of diabetic blood glucose levels using a stratified dose streptozotocin (STZ-SD) and multi-low dose streptozotocin (MLD-STZ) induction methods. 27 Wistar rats were divided into three groups, control group, SD-STZ group, and MLD-STZ group. The induction of experimental animal was using the method of SD-STZ and MLD-STZ for 5 consecutive days intraperitoneally. SD-STZ method using stratified dose of 40, 35, 30, 25, and 20 mg/Kg of body weight, while MLD-STZ method using a dose of 20 mg/Kg of body weight for 5 times. The measurement of blood glucose level (BGL) and body weight (BW) in animal was made on 2, 4, 7, and 14 days after STZ induction. The results of this study indicate that the diabetic conditions (BGL ≥ 300 mg/dl) on the SD-STZ induction method was more stable, and no deaths occurred in experimental animals.Keywords: Streptozotocin (STZ), diabetes, blood glucose level (BGL).

Abstract

Orthodontic forces produce alveolar bone and periodontal ligament remodeling that cause tooth movement. Diabetes can increase tissue damage and, therefore, contributes to the process of orthodontic tooth movement. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of differently orthodontic forces on the expression of MMP nine in rat diabetic model. Twenty four male Wistar rats were divided into three groups of control and three groups of treatment streptozotocin-induced diabetes with stratified doses. Application of orthodontic appliance was performed with different forces (10, 20 and 30 grF). Orthodontic appliance was performed on both upper incisors. Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis was used to observe the expression of MMP 9 and HE (Hematoxylen Eosin) staining to observe the number of fibroblasts. Statistical analysis was carried out using t-test and Spearman correlation analysis to determine the difference of MMP nine expression and number of fibroblasts between groups, and determine the correlation of both. The results showed an increased expression of MMP 9 and decreased of fibroblasts number in diabetic rats, along with increasing magnitude of orthodontic forces. The different orthodontic forces given to diabetic rats affect the expression of MMP 9 and the number of fibroblasts, in which the expression of MMP 9 increased along with the increase of orthodontic forces, both at pressure and tension sides.

Abstract

Pathological inflamatory condition that often complained and neglected in Indonesian is periodontal disease . The main ethiology of periodontitis is dental plaque. Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria which contained in dental plaque. Increase in P. gingivalis colony will escalate damage in periodontal tissues. One of the alternative to control microorganism growth is by antibacterial agents in cherry leaf based material which contain flavonoids, saponins and tannins as active subtance. Objective: The aim of this study  was to determine the effect of cherry leaf extract to P. gingivalis growth and to determine the maximum concentration in inhibiting the growth of P. gingivalis. Methods: This research used experimental laboratories methods with the post test only control group design. This research used well diffusion with 8 samples of each group. BHI-A was filled into petridish and inoculated by P. gingivalis. The holes was made 5 mm diameter and was filled 20μl cherry leaf extract concentration 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, aquadest steril (K-) and Chlorhexidine (K+). Petridish was placed in desicator and incubator at 370C for 24 hours. Zone of inhibition were measured by using digital caliper. Result and Conclusion: Cherry leaf extract contain antibacterial effect which can inhibit P. gingivalis increase in number with maximum concentration of 100%.

Abstract

Pendahuluan: Kopi merupakan minuman yang sering dikonsumsi masyarakat, biasanya diminum 1-3 cangkir per hari dengan kandungan kafein 60-200mg.  Konsumsi kafein lebih dari 300mg perhari akan mengganggu kesehatan, khususnya saat masa laktasi. Kafein menyebabkan terhambatnya absorpsi kalsium, sehingga jumlah kalsium dalam tubuh ibu dan bayinya akan berkurang.  Apabila saat masa laktasi ibu mengonsumsi kopi berlebihan, diperkirakan bayi akan mengalami gangguan pertumbuhan gigi berupa keterlambatan erupsi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh konsumsi kopi Arabika saat masa laktasi terhadap erupsi gigi anak tikus. Metode: Jenis penelitian eksperimental laboratoris. Penelitian ini menggunakan 12 tikus Wistar betina yang sedang menyusui, yang terbagi menjadi 3 kelompok yakni: kelompok kontrol (K), kelompok perlakuan kopi dosis normal (P1) dan kelompok perlakuan kopi dosis berlebih (P2). Kopi diberikan dalam bentuk seduhan dengan teknik sondase selama masa laktasi (21 hari). Satu anak tikus dari masing-masing induk tikus dilakukan euthanasia pada hari ke-22, kemudian dilakukan foto periapikal, selanjutnya kecepatan erupsi gigi diukur dengan CorelDraw X8. Data yang diperoleh diuji menggunakan uji one-way ANOVA dan dilanjutkan uji Least Significant Difference (LSD). Hasil: Uji one-way ANOVA memperlihatkan nilai p=0,0001 (p<0,05) yang menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan bermakna dari kecepatan erupsi gigi di antara kelompok kontrol, kelompok perlakuan kopi dosis normal dan dosis berlebih. Simpulan: Konsumsi kopi Arabika pada tikus selama masa laktasi dapat menghambat erupsi gigi anak tikus.Kata kunci: Kopi Arabika (Coffea arabica), laktasi, erupsi gigi. ABSTRACTIntroduction: Coffee is a beverage commonly consumed by the population, typically consumed approximately 1-3 cups a day with 60-200 mg of caffeine content. Consumption of more than 300 mg of caffeine per day will interfere with the health, especially for mothers during the lactation period. Caffeine induces calcium absorption reduction, thereby reducing the amount of calcium in the mother’s body as well as the baby. If the mother drinks excessive coffee during the lactation period, the baby is suspected to be having tooth development disorders such as delayed eruption. This research was aimed to analyse the effect of Arabica coffee consumption during lactation of breastfeeding Wistar rats on the tooth eruption of the offsprings. Methods: This research was an experimental laboratory. The research sample was 12 breastfeeding female Wistar rats that were divided into three groups, namely the control group, the standard dose coffee treatment group, and the overdose coffee treatment group. Coffee was administered during the lactation period (21 days) in the form of steeping with the sonde technique. One of the offsprings from each breastfeeding rats was euthanised on the 22nd day after birth. A periapical photo was taken, then the tooth eruption speed was measured with CorelDraw X8 software. The data collected were analysed using one-way ANOVA and proceeded with the LSD test. Results: The one-way ANOVA test showed the p-value = 0.0001 (p < 0.05) which indicated a significant difference in the tooth-eruption speed between the control group, the standard dose coffee treatment group, and the overdose coffee treatment group. Conclusion: Arabica coffee consumption during lactation period may delay the teeth eruption of the offsprings.Keywords: Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), lactation, teeth eruption.

Abstract

One of the main causes of dental caries is Streptococcus mutans. Some sourcesmentioned in the mangosteen peel contains flavonoids, saponins and tannins whichhave antibacterial activity. The purpose of this research was to determine theantibacterial activity of mangosteen peel infuse against S.mutans, the most effectiveinhibition and minimum inhibition. The sample was divided into 10 groups: negativecontrol (K), positive control (K +), and the treatment group of infusa mangosteen rindwith concentration of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.13%, 1.56% and 0.78%.Negative control group only containing BHI-B. Positive control group containing BHI-B,S.mutans and Tetracycline hydrochloride. The treatment groups containing BHI-B, S.mutans and different concentration of each group. S.mutans colonies was counted usinga colony counter. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney test. Results of this research showed that infuse mangosteen rind was effectiveas an antibacterial. The most effective concentration which can inhibit S.mutans colonieswas 100% and the minimum concentration was 0.78%.Keywords: Mangosteen peel infuse, antibacteria, Streptococcus mutans, Tetracycline

Abstract

Background: Panoramic radiograph is a dental radiodiagnosis which is often used to assist in establishing diagnosis and determining treatment plans using low dose x-ray radiation exposure.The basic working principle of panoramic radiograph is using ionizing radiation which causes ionization reactions on the affected objects. Radiation area in patients undergoing panoramic radiograph involves salivary glands, thus it generates certain impacts in the quality and quantity of saliva produced. Aim: To analyze the effects of panoramic dental x-ray radiation exposure on salivary pH. Research Method: This study used quasi experimental research method with pre and post test only control group design. Eight people were chosen as samples based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Saliva testing was performed to the chosen samples pre and post panoramic dental x-ray radiation exposure. The research data were measured using paired t-test statistical analysis. Result: There wassignificant difference on salivary pH pre and post panoramic dental x-ray radiation exposure (p<0,05). Conclusion: Panoramic dental x-ray exposure can decrease salivary pH. Keywords: Panoramic radiograph, Salivary pH
