Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Crystal (1998) points out everyone plays with language or responds to language. We play with language when we manipulate it as a source of enjoyment, either for ourselves or for the benefit of others. We take some words, phrases, sentences, and other linguistic features and make them do things that they do not normally do. This language manipulation can result in humor. Humor has formed a substantial part of Javanese culture. Some jokes in Javanese contain local wisdom and this, according to Bascom (in Wijana, 2003) plays an important role to maintain the social and cultural norms. This paper examines the humor used in Sing Lucu rubric which contains jokes in Panjebar Semangat magazine. In Indonesia, there are only a few printed media that specialize in Javanese language and culture. One of them is Panjebar Semangat. It is a magazine that maintains Javanese culture, especially by the use of Javanese language and Javanese related contents. This paper aims to identify the types of humor and to explore the multiculturalism through the Javanese language expression. This study is framed by drawing on theories on humor, language play, and ambiguity. The result shows that there are three types of humor used in Sing Lucu: positive, negative, and neutral. Positive and neutral jokes have entertaining contents, while negatives jokes contain stereotyping of certain races. Some jokes are not based on facts and therefore they do not always represent certain races stereotyped in such jokes.

Abstract

Tourism information media is aimed at giving positive image of Indonesian tourism to international tourists. In linguistics, especially in systemic functional linguistics, herewith SFL, the attempt to create positive or negative image of a text is studied through appraisal theory. It deals with how the authors position themselves and how the readers are positioned in the text. However, when dealing with bilingual texts, the meaning shift is highly likely because the translation of the source language may not have the same appraisal features, i.e. attitude, engagement, and graduation. Therefore, an SFL-based translation model is needed to accommodate this issue. As far as the authors observe, there is no SFL-based translation model accommodating tourism texts (Nugroho, Septemuryantoro, and Lewa, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to develop an SFL-based translation model by intertwining appraisal theory (Martin and Rose, 2013), translation techniques (Molina and Albir, 2002), and translation quality assessment (Nababan et al, 2012). By applying critical literature review, the authors analyzed the application of these theories in sample data taken from four information media, namely brochure, booklet, website, and book. Furthermore, by using Flesch readability test, the authors were able to select some parts of the media which are considered “hard to read”. The result of this study reveals that there is a minimum shift of appraisal features found in the bilingual tourism media. It happens because the translators mostly employ established equivalent technique to translate the texts. However, the positive result mentioned previously does not go hand in hand with the quality of the translation. Therefore, to bridge the outcome between the appraisal features of source and target languages reflected through the use of translation techniques and the assessment result of their translation quality, the authors need to generate a holistic SFL-based translation model.

Abstract

Abstract. This study is aimed at investigating the types of cohesive devices and their relationship which are found in an article of Time magazine entitled “how covid-19 will shape the class of 2020 for the rest of their live”. In conducting this study, the researchers employ descriptive qualitative as the research design. Meanwhile, in collecting the data, the researcher applied a purposive sampling method by choosing an article in an on line Time magazine. Meanwhile, the text was analyzed using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) especially those contributing to the cohesion of the text, including grammatical and lexical cohesion. The result of this study reveals that the text is “hang-together” which is described by the successfully use of cohesive devices. These patterns indicate that the writer of the article introduces the capacity to create a text with cohesion not only at the clause level but also to create text with better unity, flow and connectedness of information of the whole text. Besides, the use of cohesion in the text can create a relationship between language elements. Furthermore, the text of the article uses some simple cohesive devices such as reference, conjunction, repetition, and synonym. Keywords: cohesion, cohesive devices, language elements, magazine, SFLAbstrak. Time berjudul “how covid-19 will shape the class of 2020 for the rest of their live”.

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to compare power aspects portrayed by the main character in The Hunger Games and Divergent novels and see the similarities and differences between those two novels. The object of this research is Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and Veronica Roth’s Divergent Novels. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative as the method of the study. The researcher used Karlberg's (2005) theory to conduct this research. The researcher classified the characteristic of power into Power as Domination (there are 5 types) and Power as Capacity (there are 4 types) to get the data. The other elements that help the researcher easier to collect the data that can be compared are using the novel's intrinsic elements. The result shows Katniss (The Hunger Games) and Tris (Divergent) as the main character, they have power on some points. Some points of the power from those novels have similar portrayals such as Power as Domination in Position, Power as Domination in Knowledge, Power as Domination in Experience, Power as Domination in Gender, Power as Capacity in Anger, Power as Capacity in Bravery, and Power as Capacity in Disappointed. Few points show if those two books have different portrayals, such as the point of Power as Domination in Age and Power as Capacity in Worrying. So, based on the research and the result shown, The Hunger Games and Divergent are thought of as the same novels because some power portrayals from those novels are similar.Abstract. Abstract

Borobudur Temple is one of the icons of Indonesian tourism in the world. Unfortunately, tourists, domestic and foreign, do not have knowledge of the importance of the existence of Borobudur Temple as a cultural heritage. Evidence of the lack of knowledge of domestic tourists about the conservation of Borobudur Temple is reflected in the vandalism of thousands of people who left stains on the Borobudur stone. This has the potential to damage the rock layers of the temple. Foreign tourists themselves are also seen as lacking comprehensive knowledge about Borobudur Temple. They know a lot about the history of Borobudur, but do not understand the history of the villages surrounding the supporters of Borobudur Temple. The history of the villages around Borobudur is an important element in supporting Borobudur as a cultural heritage. In addition, efforts are needed to maintain tourist interest in visiting Borobudur Temple and the surrounding villages during the limited number of visitors. For this reason, a way is needed to educate the general public about the history and conservation efforts of the Borobudur Temple and the surrounding villages which have historical and geographical links. Based on these problems, the researchers developed a digital book called Buddhara (Borobudur Dalam Cerita) and has been testing using questionnaire.
