Abstract

As a discourse, Islamic jurisprudence (al-fiqh al-Isla>my) and the study of prophetic tradition (hadis) were historically emerged from such a basic source; the “living tradition” which is the hybrid segmentation consisted of the Prophet wagons, companion practices and public opinions (al-amr al-mujtama’ ‘alayh) before the time of codification. At that time, both are organically have a strong relation. In the occasion of the authentication of isnad in the first-half of second century, in which the culmination was the codification, there was a discourse shift. The central purpose of this article is to provide an elementary exploration on the early linkage between hadis studies and Islamic jurisprudence. Start on the preliminary explanation on the contact between the origins of Islamic jurisprudence and the study of prophetic traditions, it discusses How both organically linked each other before the shifts after the time of codification, in which the organic relation between ijtihad (independent reasoning) and the so-called “living tradition” epistemologically came to the segregation. The further development that disposed fiqh and hadis in the distinct epistemological nomenclature has shown this affirmation of the polarization.

Abstract

AbstrakOne of the determinant factors in the process of Islamization of the archipelago is the intersection between Islamic teachings and local wisdom. The encounter of the two has apparently brought an esoteric way. In this case, the Islamic esoteric teaching namely Sufism has become important. However, there was another esoteric element which also has a main role in the process, namely the mystical insight as to the result of the synthesis of the Islamic esoteric teaching and the indigenous mystical tradition. Using the ethnographic approach, this article aims to provide a preliminary remark on the intersection between Islam and local mystic tradition as represented by pananyaan and ahli hikmah in Sundanese people, especially in Tasikmalaya, as the reference. He is regarded as the learned man a place for someone to ask, especially related to the world of unseen.

Abstract

The rural Sundanese commonly recognize what so-called “pananyaan”, (literary means "who is asked or the place/someone to ask") as someone who has ability to reveal the world of unseen and give advices on all problem brought to him. In the more Islamic sense, he is also called “Ahli Hikmah”. The existence of “Pananyaan” has shown rhe presence of an acculturation. In which the mystic synthesis appeared between Islamic spearum and Sundanese local genius. The case of “pananyaan” within its depelovement is one of the keyword to trace that synthesis phase of mystic intersection. Start on preiminary sketch on “pananyaan” in Sundanese local custom, this paper aims to explore the acculturation domains in “pananyaan” after the emergence of lately established “ahli hikmah”. To do so, i examine three “pananyaan” from different generation, those who represented the different fashion in the ongoing depelovement. In this case, some of “pananyaan” rituals and their magical spells used by these elderly people had, in turn, reflected the traces of that mystic synthesis. Recently, the continuation of what had going on before. is still taking place until recent times in more puritanical direction. Keywords:  pananyaan, ahli hikmah, acculturation, mysticsynthesis

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to describe an intersection between Qur’anic exegetical tradition and Islamic philosophy, with special reference to the Tafsīr Āyat al-Kursī, one of the Mullā Ṣadrā’s works on Qur’anic commentary. Ṣadrā is one of the representative exponents of a philosophical school called ḥikmah (theosophy), which developed after Ibn Rusyd period in the eastern part of the Islamic world. In order to know the unique form of interaction between Al-Qur’an and Islamic philosophy, Tafsīr Āyat al-Kursī is a representative work to be explored, particularly by studying philosophical materials in it. This research shows that the book was written when Mullā Ṣadrā had just completed the ascetic phase in Kahak, along with the tension happened between exoteric and esoteric groups. Tafsīr Āyat al-Kursī is also one of two earliest Ṣadrā’s works on Qur’anic commentary. In addition to previous commentaries, the material sources of this book consist of sufism, kalam (dialectics), and philosophy. In the philosophical frame, this book encompasses metaphysical, cosmological and eschatological issues, as well as some of the Qur’anic sciences issues discussed in an onto-epistemological way.
