Abstract

Television, music videos, films, and pop bands are all part of global popular culture and thought to be the product of “the west”. These media are therefore often seen as a threat to the identities of nationalities, local cultures, and religious groups. In contrast, in the context of Indonesian Muslims, the Indonesian Ulama Council’s (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI) showed support for Fatin Shidqia Lubis to the singing contest of Indonesian X Factor, 2013. This paper intends to study the presence of Fatin Sidqiah as the winner of Indonesian X Factor and the response of Indonesian muslims regarding Islamic popular culture in Indonesia. This paper argues that the presence of Islamic popular culture in Indonesia through books, novels, films, as well as fashion, show that Indonesian Islam and muslims are compatible not only with democracy but also with global popular culture. In addition, the presence of Fatin is a symbol of young Indonesian muslims who already connect globally. Whatever they consume in terms of popular culture is intrinsic to the creation of their hybrid identities, as both Indonesian muslims and global citizens.[Televisi, musik, film, dan bands merupakan bagian dari budaya popular dunia dan selalu dipandang sebagai produk “barat”.

Abstract

As a newly independent country, Sukarno as Indonesian president had a big plan to develop Indonesia, namely to build economic, politic, and governmental infrastructure independently. One way to take was both developing human resource capabilities and creating a new potential generation among Indonesian students by sending them to study in the developed countries. However, the imagined dream had disappeared along with the events of 1965-1966 which marked by the movement of September 30, 1965. This paper focuses on pre and post of the 1965-1966 events by raising two questions; how was Indonesia being imagined by the Sukarno presidency within the context of foreign policy in the Cold War era by sending the Indonesian students for studying overseas? What was the impact of the 1965-966 events that they were facing? This article shows that the event of 1965-1966 does not only break a dream that imagined by Sukarno, but also causes the emergence of Indonesian exiles community that had been finally forced them to become a stateless citizen. Although they are no longer Indonesian citizen, both of their memory and social activities of Indonesia have been still so strong up to now. In the term of Benedict Anderson’s words, they are well-known as community of long-distance nationalism. Kata kunci: Sukarno, the 1965-1966 tragedy, exiles, long distance nationalism

Abstract

Abstract A term of islah is quite familiar for Indonesian Muslims. It is an Islamic reconciliation term adopted from Al-Quran and Sunnah to end a conflict. With this term, those people who have been conflicting try to improve their relation to look for a better future by getting rid of their anger and vengeance. The cases of Tanjung Priok (1984) and Talang Sari (1989) tragedy, which caused hundreds of killed Muslims during Soeharto regime, are real examples to see how islah is practiced. Instead of being the best way for conflict resolution, it was part of the problems causing those cases unfinished in the formal court. It had caused the group of the victims divided within two groups; pros and cons of islah. Using islah as the pretext, many of the victims tended to finish it informally with the violators, although the rest still insisted to bring it to the court. The fragmented memory among them about the cases caused a lot of difficulties to prove it legally. Exploring the Islam sources as well as the case of Tanjung Priok and Talang Sari in Post-New Order Regime, this paper examines whether islah is a solution or precisely a part of the problem. This paper aims to put the term of islah and its significant in a proper way; therefore, this paper can contribute to the development of peace and conflict studies. Keywords: Islah, Tanjung Priok (1984), Talang Sari (1989), islamic law, victims, conflict resolution

Abstract

Not only change the landscape of popular culture, but the presence of social media also reshapes the structure and the agency. Nowadays, social media can turn ordinary people to celebrities. Using Instagram and YouTube, Ria Ricis has become a piety celebrity who shows her Islamic identity through Islamic performance by wearing the veil in a casual way and earns money from her uploaded videos in social media. Based on a case study of this figure, this paper raises questions related to Islamic popular culture in Indonesia: How does Indonesian define their public sphere currently amid the growth of social media usage? How does Indonesian Muslim respond to social media as a part of digital technology amidst Islamization in the post of an authoritarian regime? What is the possibility of tension for that young Indonesian Muslim as micro-celebrity while facing the three factors related, Islamic identities, enjoyment, and economic benefits? This paper argues that the new media platform has not only affected Indonesian Muslims’ lifestyles, but also the way in which they negotiate Islamic values, secular life, and economic interest. Keywords: Ria Ricis, Social Media, Islamic Popular Culture, and Digital Economy

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In the early years of Reform Era, Islam in Indonesia was portrayed as the representation of moderate Islam. While some scholars argue that Islam in Indonesia has strong ties with religious commodification, Indonesia also often presented as the best practice where Islam could work with democracy. At that time, even Islamist groups were never really considered as a real threat to Indonesian democracy, mainly because their activities were mostly described as fragmented and sporadic. In that context, the Jakarta election brings new dynamic as part of the discussion on Islamization in Indonesia after the fall of the New Order. The blasphemy case of Ahok has become a trigger for a series of demonstration that illustrates the strength of political Islam ideology in shaping current Indonesian public sphere. To discuss these recent developments the article revisits the discourse of Islamization in Indonesia. We argue that intertwine between commodification of religious symbols, the use of new media, and political interest serves as the background of the unholy alliances between religious elites and political entrepreneurs in Jakarta election. As a consequence, the event of the Jakarta election has become a critical juncture where the emergence of Islamic populism has threatened both the notion of Indonesian democracy and the existence of moderate Moslem as well.Â
