Abstract

This paper aims to describe how the issue of disasters in Indonesia can be modified into a positive social capital to solve social, economic, political and social culture’s problems in disaster prone areas. This paper found that Indonesia’s disaster managements get worldwide recognition and increases Indonesia’s competitiveness toward other countries. These recognitions become the sources of Indonesia’s soft power, and can be used as a strategic instrument to build regional cooperation and international collaboration to improve infrastructure that can reduce the degree of disasters’ material and immaterial losses.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe how a weak state can become a threat to the security of other countries, using Colombia as a case study. Colombia showed a weak state characteristic as seen from the lack of control and the existence of government, military capabilities are limited, dysfunctional judicial system and weak law enforcement, as well as a weak tax collection system. The condition was successfully exploited by drug trafficking organizations to operate as well as deploy a security threat not only for the internal region of Colombia, but also for other nations. The existence of Colombia as a weak state and successfully exploited by drug trafficking organizations causing security threats such as terrorism, weapons proliferation and environmental degradation.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine how the issue of disasters in Indonesia can be modified into a positive social capital to solve social, economic, political and social culture’s problems in disaster prone areas. Indonesia is very vulnerable to natural disasters. Some of the latest and most destructive natural disasters are the earthquake followed by tsunami that hit Aceh Indonesia on 2004, earthquake hit Yogyakarta and Central Java earthquake on 2006 and volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi Yogyakarta and Central Java 2011. Using qualitative approach, this paper found that Indonesia’s disaster managements get worldwide recognition and increases Indonesia’s competitiveness toward other countries. These recognitions become the sources of Indonesia’s soft power, and can be used as a strategic instrument to build international cooperation and collaboration.

Abstract

The evolution of both domestic and international security issues have influenced the development of Indonesia intelligence and its agencies. Indonesia intelligence reform is marked by the establishment of Badan Intelijen Nasional or Indonesia National Intelligence Agency and the enactment of Law Number 17 of 2011 on The State Intelligence. In order to reveal the paradigm used in determining the direction of Indonesia’s national security policy, this paper analyzes Law Number 17 of 2011 on The State Intelligence using content analysis method. Analysis among indicators representing three paradigms; realism, liberalism, and constructivism shows that Law Number 17 of 2011 on The State Intelligence is strongly influenced by realist paradigm.

Abstract

ABSTRACTDiplomacy as a foreign policy instrument of certain states to attain its national interest has traditionally been the authority of the central government regarding to its adequate capability and authority than other actors.  Indonesia has high rank on disaster vulnerability in the world. Disasters always have been more understood as lost factors than social capital factors. The 2004 earthquake and tsunami in Aceh was a monumental history how managing disasters became a source of productive political and economic diplomacy. This paper will explain how the issue of natural disasters drove some new actors especially local government which has disaster prone areas to participate on disaster diplomacy activities and develop new strategy to manage and capitalize natural disaster into positive social capital to solve social problems, economic, political and social culture in disaster prone areas. The result of article show transformation of actor perceptions on disasters will affect disaster governance.Keywords: Indonesian disaster diplomacy, local government, para-diplomacy and International cooperation

Abstract

ABSTRACT Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the United States has become the world's undisputed economic superpower. However, the economic reforms carried out by China since the 1980s have had a big effect on its economic growth, so that it is able to rank as the second largest economy in the world after the United States. This makes America must respond to China's development by making strategic policies. State leaders have an important role in determining the direction of United States Foreign Policy. From 2009 to 2018, America underwent 2 transitions of leadership, namely from President Barack Obama to being replaced by President Donald Trump. Even though the two leadership eras are close together, the US Foreign Policy towards China is in stark contrast. This research will analyze how the differences in the US Foreign Policy against China in the Barack Obama and Donald Trump Era and the factors that cause differences in their policies by using the idiosyncratic individual factor approach. This article finds that the different backgrounds in the life of a country's leader will influence their perception in determining the direction of their foreign policy.
