Abstract

Background: Food borne diseases are caused by contamination of pathogenic microorganism and are still a major health problem throughout the world. There are 1,8 billion cases of diarrhea which mostly were caused by food contamination in 2005. Food handlers are at risk of contaminating microorganism towards food they handle. The process of transmission can be prevented by practicing good hygiene while processing and handling food. The objective of this study was assessing knowledge among food handlers regardingtheir personal and food hygiene at canteen in Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted during the period of October to November 2012 to 14 food handlers in the Canteen at Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran using 26 validated questions divided into 3 major parts, 14 questions for knowledge of hand washing, 9 questions for knowledge of utilization of clean water and 3 questions for knowledge of waste management. The scores were classified as good, moderate, and poor. Data were analyzed using frquency distribution. Results: Majority of the respondents was male and common age group was 20–29 years old. Eight of the respondents were senior high school graduates. Based on working experience, majority of food handlers had been working for one and three years. None of the respondents had good knowledge. Only 12 and 2respondents had moderate and poor knowledge, respectively. Conclusion: None of the respondents had good knowledge regarding hand washing, utilization of clean water and waste management. Therefore, there is a need in providing more education about those aspects.[AMJ.2015;2(1):245–9]

Abstract

Kata kunci: Genotipe rubela 1E, genotipe rubela 2B, epidemiologi rubela Distribution and Genotypic Analysis of Rubella Virus in West Java on 2011–2013Rubella spreads around the world and dangerous especially for pregnant women because it can cause abortion, fetal death or congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) almost 90% cases. Spread and identification of rubella genotypes in Indonesia is important to ensure the indigenous or importation virus. The purpose of this study was to determine the rubella genotype distribution and spread in West Java in  effective prevention efforts. This study was conducted by examining the urine samples of suspect measles patients using WHO protocol through the virus isolation in vero cells, PCR, DNA sequencing, and analysis of the sequencing results. Samples taken from the measles-rubella surveillance program nationwide in 2011 ̶ 2013. Of the 251 urine samples were examined, 32 samples (12.7%) were positive. A total of 28 cases (87.5%) were genotype 1E while the remaining 4 cases (12.5%) were genotype 2B. Rubella virus spread primarily occurs in District of Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Bandung City, Cimahi City, andTasikmalaya City. Prevention of the rubella diseases and CRS surveillance in endemic areas should be priority task to break the chain of transmission.Key words: Rubella genotype 1E, rubella genotype 2B, rubella epidemiology

Abstract

Tamansari Urban Village is a slum area located in the center of Bandung City. Sixty percents of its dwellers use pipe water as the clean water source while the rest uses ground water. However, not all water sources are protected correctly that there is a potential for contamination. This study aimed to analyze factors influencing clean water use behavior among urban slum dwellers by applying the Integrated Behavior Model. A cross-sectional study was performed on 188 households in 10 RW (neighborhood unit) on Cikapundung River Bank in Taman Sari Urban Village. Questionnaires and observation checklists were used for piping water source (Local Water Company, PDAM), protected wells, and unprotected wells. The results of this study showed that the attitude, perceived norms, and personal factors influenced the intention to use clean water for the three clean water sources. Among PDAM users, no significant factor was seen to influence behavior. Among protected well users, the behavior was influenced by the interest factor in using clean water. Among unprotected well users, attitude, environmental barriers, and habit influenced the behavior of using clean water. Factors influencing behaviors, especially in urban slum areas, are different based on the source of clean water used; hence, the implementation health promotion through behavioural change should be adapted to the type of water source used.
