Abstract

Background: Calcium bentonite is a natural clay that has the ability to absorb toxins and metabolite excess substances and often referred to as healing clay because it is used traditionally. This study aimed to determine the ability of local calcium bentonite to absorp high blood glucose..Methods: This study was an experimental study using 20 female Wistar rats and divided into two groups consisting of Group I (control group, n=10) and Group II (calcium bentonite group, n=10). Diabetes in rats was induced by alloxan monohydrate 150 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally. Examination of blood glucose was performed three times; in the beginning of study, 72 hours after alloxan monohydrate induction, and four days after the given interventions. Blood glucose levels in mean values were analyzed using t-independent test. Statistically significance was considered when p<0.05.Results: Oral calcium bentonite of 1g/kg body weight significantly lowered blood glucose level relatively to the control group with average value of 131.30 mg/dl (p=0.01).Conclusions: Calcium bentonite significantly lowers blood glucose levels. DOI: 10.15850/amj.v2n3.562

Abstract

Abstract

Exercise-induced hearth muscle adaptation is important for physiological process after exercise. This adaptation will ensure basal mitochondrial homeostasis and as a part of the mitochondria quality control. This process is reflected by equal level of biogenesis stimulation and as well as the selective degradation of old and undesirable mitochondria through fusion or fission cycle and Mitophagy. There is limited information about genetic regulation stimulated by training in cardiomyocytes. We believe there is a specific myokines or protein release in the serum and initiate cardiac muscle adaptation process. In the present study, twelve male wistar rats were appointed to two group: sedentary control and aerobic-intensity (AE, 15m/minute). Rats were trained for running with specific protocol as follows: 30 minutes/day with a 5 times/week interval for 8 weeks. On the last day, serum form control and exercise groups were taken via retro-orbital sinus. Then, 3.105  H9C2 cells (Rat cardiomyocytes cell line)  were cultured and incubated by this serum for 24 hours. After treatment, cell were extracted using trisure for RNA purification and continue with reverse transcriptase PCR. Our data showed that expression of the Pgc-1α, Mfn1, Mfn2, Opa1, Drp1, Pink, and Parkin genes were altered and modulated. Specifically, Mfn1, Mfn2, and Opa1 gene expression levels significantly increased. Interestingly, we did not find significant modulation for  Pgc-1α, Drp1, Pink, and Parkin. Taken together, serum of exercise rats might be contained with myokines or specific protein which was released during training and it altered mitochondrial genes expression in cardiomyocytes culture cell. We believe that myokines release in the serum had a contribution in cardiacmyocyte adaptation.

Abstract

In Indonesia, it is estimated that there would be increasing in number of diabetes mellitus patients become 12 million cases in 2030. The expensive cost of conventional medications motivates people to find alternative medication. Bentonite is a natural clay which is a good absorbent and frequently called as healing clay for its potency in body detoxification. This study is an experimental research to prove bentonite which is a good absorbent and adsorbent in decreasing blood glucose concentration in diabetes mellitus. Subject of this research is 20 female Wistar rats which weigh 150–250 g. These subjects were divided into two groups: control group and bentonite group. Diabetes is induced by alloxan monohydrate 150mg/kg intraperitoneally, causing β cell necrosis in pancreas. Result of independent t-test showed that bentonite could significantly lower blood glucose levels with average value of 131.30 mg/dL (p=0.010). This concludes that bentonite canreduce blood glucose level in diabetic-induced rats.

Abstract

Exercise is one of the factors that affect cardiovascular health. Exercise has been proven to reduce the number of cardiovascular diseases. However, it is also known that doing intense exercise has an adverse effect on heart health which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. While doing exercise, there is compensation from the heart itself by producing substances to maintain the heart to remain functional, known as cardiac biomarkers, including ANP and SERCA2a. Thus far, the recommended intensity is moderate-intensity exercise, which is optimal for heart health, but this recommendation has not been supported by biomolecular study. Therefore, this research was conducted. This study was done using semi-quantitative analytic method and experimental study design. Total of 24 male wistar rats were divided randomly into 4 groups: 1 control group (0m/min) and 3 exercise groups (low-: 10m/min, moderate-: 20m/min, high- intensity exercise: 30m/min). All groups received 30 min/day running, 5x/week for 12 weeks. The rats were terminated under anaesthesia, cardiac muscle extraction was done from left ventricle, and gene expression of ANP and SERCA2a is studied. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software with one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc comparisons if the p-values < 0.05. The expression of ANP increased but insignificant in low-, moderate-, and high-intensity exercise group of rat (0.872±0.034 vs 0.901±0.018 vs 0.916±0.015 vs 0.938±0.025; p=0.304). The expression of SERCA2a also increased insignificantly in low-, moderate-, and high-intensity exercise group of rat (1.044±0.019 vs 1.051±0.015 vs 1.063±0.011 vs 1.082±0.027; p=0.493). Different exercise intensity didn’t have significant effect on ANP and SERCA2a expression in rat cardiac muscle.

Abstract

During the National Sports Week XVIII held in September 2012, wrestling athletes from West Java Province could not meet the expected performance; since they got only one gold and two bronze medals. The athlete’s performance usually affected by three factors; physical condition, technique, and mental condition. To achieve the best result, the gold medal, athletes should have good predominant physical condition indicators, such as muscle strength, endurance, power, and flexibility. The purpose of this study is to know the physical condition of West Java’s wrestling athletes in the National Sports Week XVIII. The method used was a cross-sectional descriptive study using secondary data obtained from the Sports Medicine Department of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia in Bandung. The data are chosen from the predominant physical condition indicator explained before, along with cardio-respiratory endurance. After that, we compared the data we obtained with the National Sports Committee of Indonesia’s standards and categorized it specific type; less, enough, good, very good, and perfect. Male and female athletes had different category systems. After analysis, we found that several predominant physical components of wrestling athletes of West Java Province in National Sports Week XVIII had not met the requirement for the good and perfect category andneeded to be improved. In conclusion, athletes should be able to get a gold medal if their predominant physical component achieves the good and perfect category.

Abstract

Exercise when done regularly will give big impact to the body. One of the alteration in an athlete that can be made is the cardiovascular system change. This study aimed to discover the difference of heart rate and blood pressure between aerobic predominant athlete and anaerobic predominant athlete. The study design was case-control, data collected from 80 athletes divided into 40 aerobic predominant athletes (canoe, sail, gantole, shooting, and bicycle racing) and 40 anaerobic predominant athletes (weight lifting, taekwondo, softball, tarung derajat, and rock climbing) in KONI West Java, Bandung. Sample was collected by random sampling and analyzed by T test independent. The result showed there was significant difference of heart rate between aerobic predominant athlete and anaerobic predominant athlete (p=0,0001), and lower in aerobic. There was also no significant difference of systolic blood pressure between predominant aerobic athlete and predominant anaerobic athlete (p=0,404), and was higher in anaerobic. Another result showed no significant difference of diastolic blood pressure between predominant aerobic athlete and predominant anaerobic athlete (p=0,553) and was higher in anaerobic. In conclusion, there was significant difference of the heart rate, but no difference of systolic and diastolic blood pressure between aerobic predominant and anaerobic predominant athlete.
