Abstract

This writing discusses about English language lesson that can be used to implement character values on students or learners. English language teaching and learning, since then is considered as a lesson which only teaches the language skills, namely English language, which comes from secular countries. The teachers, generally, have perception that character education only can be implemented through religion lessons. They do not realize that English language also reflects character values that owned by the language users. Its values are reflected on the models of its sentences, for example the discipline value, the politeness and the honest. The sentences models are taken as the sample in this writing is “Tenses”.

Abstract

This article is discussing about the children acquisition in second language. It is observing how a child acquires her second language through YouTube. It described the child age 3,7 years habit to watch video through YouTube. The daily notes were taken to see the child’s words, sentences, and also reaction after watching the video intensively for two months. The research observation result shown that a child starts her acquiring by perceiving the language through silent period. She needs 3-5 times to watch a video, and then she is able to imitate words and sentences in video, even though her pronunciation is not fluency yet. Moreover, she does not really understand about the meaning of the words or sentences. It is indicated that the children age 3,7 years old still has difficulties to understand the beyond meaning of the words or sentences. The implication of this research is to show the stages of children in acquiring their second language which is similar to their first language acquisition. Therefore, teaching and learning second language should not be different from teaching and learning first language.

Abstract

This research aims to generate English teachers who can comprehend and use blended learning methods. The purpose of this Classroom Action Research (CAR) study is to enhance the knowledge and comprehension of English subject teachers regarding using the blended learning model in the learning process. This study investigated how considerably English teachers' knowledge and comprehension of the blended learning model increased due to the training. This course also includes information about the blended learning paradigm, which mixes face-to-face learning (direct interaction) with online learning, for instance, through social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, Skype, and Teleconference. The results indicated that many participants were unfamiliar with the most recent learning applications.

Abstract

Learning enviroment affects students' learning qualitiyin the class. It needs teachers' ability to manage the seating arrangement. This study aimed to describe the English teachers' perception on the seating arrangement and to find out obstacles faced by teachers when applying seating arrangement. This study employed descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The result of the study indicated that the perception of the English teachers on the seating arrangement pattern is vey important. The class arrangement that has been applied is the seating pattern in the form of a separated table and solo work. With the aim that class conditions are fun and not monotonous. Obstacles that were often faced by the teachers; a) Student conditions, they often make noise when changed the seating arrangement pattern. Even, they were not only hard to manage but also protested to change; b) Classroom condition, a narrow room is also an inhibiting factor for the application of the seating arrangement pattern. Therefore, this research study is to encourage teachers to create the learning environment which affect to the students’ learning quality.

Abstract

Background: English textbooks are a medium for delivering a material; good textbooks must support good material in accordance with eight ideal textbook criteria.          Objective: This study aims to analyze and describe English textbooks used in SMA Negeri 1 Gorontalo Regency. Purpose: This study aims to analyze and describe English textbooks used in SMA Negeri 1 Gorontalo Regency. Method: This study used a qualitative method with a content analysis approach to textbooks. Data were obtained through a system of observation of topics, language aspects, task forms for four language skills, and task structures in each chapter of the book. The textbooks analyzed were for grade X high school students published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the 2017 edition of the K-13 curriculum. The data were analyzed descriptively in accordance with eight criteria for textbook analysis, namely the purpose and approach of book design and organization, language content, language skills, topics, methodology, teachers' books, and language practice situations. Results and Discussion: The results showed that of the eight criteria for a good textbook, this book fulfills five criteria. The five criteria have clear objectives and approaches, book design and organization, language content, language skills, topics, and language practice situations. Conclusion and Implications: This research has implications for efforts to improve students' mastery of English language skills through the teaching materials in the textbooks used.

Abstract

Foreign language anxiety is a type of anxiety that is experienced by individuals when learning, speaking, or interacting in a foreign language. Some scholars have been interested to investigate the foreign language anxietyin the classroom and identified the cause of students’ foreign language anxiety, either in international context or Indonesia context. Most of the factors related to the linguistic aspect, such as students lack vocabulary, students lack of pronunciation, and do not understand of teacher’s talk. However, the research about factors of foreign language anxiety is caused by non-linguistic aspect was still undergrown. This research came to stipulate the gap of knowledge. This research used qualitative method and study case design. It took 20 students of English Education Department FITK IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo who have Upper-Intermediate proficiency level. The instruments of research used foreign language anxiety scale to identify factors of students’ foreign language anxiety and in-depth interview to know the students’ reason of being anxiety in foreign language classroom. It used triangulation method in analysing data, namely reducing data, displaying data, and drawing conclusion. The results showing that there were 3 non-linguistic aspects in causing students’ foreign language anxiety. First, they felt worried if they had to speak in front of the class and answered the lecturer's questions voluntarily. Second, they felt worried if they do not understand what the lecturer is talking about. Third, they felt worried if they did not prepare before the lesson started. Fourth, students felt worried if they would get a bad score. This result implied to the teacher’s technique in asking the students to speak in front of the classmate. Therefore, the research suggested to apply small group discussion in teaching and learning speaking skill in foreign language classroom.
