Abstract

Abstract. Halitosis is an oral health problem that is characterized by bad breath and many people complain about it, which has an impact on self-image and social problems. The main cause of halitosis is the activity of anaerobic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans which produce Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) in the oral cavity. Edible film is a pharmaceutical preparation developed to prevent halitosis, has a thin transparent layer cut to a certain length and width, is practical, and is biodegradable. The purpose of this article review is to provide information related to extracts as antihalitosis against Streptococcus mutans bacteria which are formed in edible film preparations from various types of film forming agents used with manufacturing methods that are in accordance with the characteristics of an active substance. The research method was carried out using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). The results of the literature review show that the extracts that have the potential as antihalitosis against Streptococcus mutans bacteria are celery extract, gedi leaf extract, betel leaf extract, rosella flower petal extract, water henna leaf extract, basil leaf extract, cat whiskers leaf extract, binahong leaf extract, sustainable live stem extract, and extracts of leilem leaves. The extract can be formulated into edible films with the type of film forming agent in the form of polysaccharides and proteins as well as composites which are a mixture of polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids made using the solvent casting method. Abstrak. Halitosis termasuk masalah kesehatan mulut yang ditandai dengan keadaan nafas bau tidak sedap dan banyak dikeluhkan masyarakat, berdampak terhadap citra diri dan masalah sosial. Penyebab utama halitosis yaitu adanya aktivitas bakteri anaerob seperti Streptococcus mutans yang memproduksi Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) dalam rongga mulut. Edible film merupakan sediaan farmasi yang dikembangkan untuk mencegah halitosis, memiliki lapisan tipis transparan yang dipotong dengan panjang dan lebar tertentu, praktis, dan bersifat biodegradable. Tujuan review artikel ini untuk memberikan informasi terkait ekstrak sebagai antihalitosis terhadap bakteri Streptococcus mutans yang dibentuk dalam sediaan edible film dari berbagai jenis film forming agent yang digunakan dengan metode pembuatan yang sesuai dengan karakteristik suatu zat aktif. Metode penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Hasil kajian pustaka menunjukan bahwa ekstrak yang berpotensi sebagai antihalitosis terhadap bakteri Streptococcus mutans yaitu, ekstrak seledri, ekstrak daun gedi, ekstrak daun sirih, ekstrak kelopak bunga rosella, ekstrak daun pacar air, ekstrak daun kemangi, ekstrak daun kumis kucing, ekstrak daun binahong, ekstrak batang sambung nyawa, dan ekstrak daun leilem. Ekstrak tersebut dapat diformulasikan kedalam sediaan edible film dengan jenis film forming agent berupa polisakarida dan protein serta komposit yang merupakan campuran dari polisakarida, protein, dan lipid yang dibuat dengan menggunakan solvent casting method.
