Abstract

Kata Kunci pembangunan infrastruktur, komunikasi antar-budaya, konstruksi sosial, pendidikan, transportasi   In the last ten years, The Government of Indonesia focused this country's development in infrastructure aspect. Meanwhile, this foundational development still left traces of centralistic culture to local that built imbalances rather than synergies. Infrastructure-based development was still aiming to enhance the economy through global investments which unfortunately ignore local aspects of people. From explanation above, a question raised; was local culture accomodated by infrastructure-based development in Indonesia in 2005-2015? This question will be answered through explorative-descriptive method through qualitative analysis on textual data. This analysis would like to answer center-local relations in cross-cultural communication in infrastructure-based development. First relation is about transportation development which still built access rather than shaped equal local economy. Openness through accesibility is not automatically strengthen local region. Second relation is changing social structure as the excess of infrastructure-based development. This change was faced through repression and conflict between government or companies with local people because of such inappropriateness within. Third relation is cultural education which ignored cross-cultural communication. Developments are made only through quantitative aspect rather than local qualitative content. From those three above, infrastructure-based development still indicated locality only as its object. By reflecting the purpose of development, communication with locals should be built without taking out the essence of the development itself. Abstract

Abstract

Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of The Red Death is a famous story of a plague in which the infected ones died with blood coming out from pores. Prince Prospero as ruler of that area ignores it but then was killed by a figure with a face full of blood covered in a mask. In the COVID-19 pandemic, the infected ones are quite seen as terror and disgust. People stay away from them as if they are dirty and sinful. It is similar to how Red Masque and Red Death are indicated in Poe’s story. However, Emmanuel Levinas argues that the epiphany of the face invites people to be ethical to others. Then, how is the epiphany of the face reflected in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of The Red Death? By using the qualitative method, written data, concepts, and theories are asserted to answer that question. Comparing Levinas’ explanation, Poe’s story, and today’s pandemic situation could bring in better insight into how the infected ones should be treated better. They must not be excluded, but they need our ethical compassion in answering their presence to us.

Abstract

The last decade was marked by sectarian violence in Indonesia. In 2008, violence occurred on Ahmadiyah groups in Cikeusik, Pandeglang and in Manis Lor, Kuningan in 2010. Violence also experienced by Shia groups in Bangil and Sampang in 2011 and 2012. Some of these events indicate the interaction between globalization and identity that is not always peaceful because it affirms identity by exclusion until applying violence to another in the process. There is a landmark that the rampant exclusion to violence is facilitated by globalization. This study looks at this link by analyzing how globalization allows for patterns of violence in sectarianism in Indonesia. Globalization forms the basis of this study primarily as a condition that facilitates the flow of information and communication. As a result, individuals become more open to the possibilities or find the fundamentally inclined side. The authors argue that globalization also enables an increase in the spread of violence against other rather than bringing tolerance and togetherness. This can be seen from the hate narratives formed against Ahmadiyya and Shiite groups by conservative groups. In conclusion, globalization tends to serve as enabling conditions rather than actors who form discourse. Against the pattern of sectarian violence, globalization also allows the narrative of hatred to spread into violence as normal in strengthening identity. In other words, far from acknowledging the truth, globalization in fact also enables subscribers to the pattern of sectarian violence in Indonesia. Keywords: globalisation, violence, other, narration, sectarianABSTRAKDekade terakhir diwarnai kekerasan sektarian di Indonesia.

Abstract

After being called the UN's, COVID-19 has become a global common enemy today. The escalation of the pandemic has been responded to nationally, regionally, as well as globally. However, the efforts of the United Nations as the most significant international organization are interpreted differently at the regional and national levels. That way, there will be a gap in understanding between the handling of COVID-19 at the global, regional, and national levels. Therefore, this paper discusses further how the COVID-19 as a common global enemy is reflected in regional and national actions against this pandemic? The global eclectic theory is explored to explain how global concepts relate to more specific concepts. Comparing the COVID-19 handling policies in ASEAN, SAARC, and the EU is needed to deeply explain the differences in handling the outbreak in each region. The result shows that common enemies do not automatically reflect joint regional action. National interest is still challenging to consolidate at the regional, furthermore global level. Moreover, cultural differences between countries cannot be reduced quickly in global matters.

Abstract

Literature examines differences among classes especially the powerful-the non-powerful and the rich-the poor through literary conditions. Imogayu is Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s short story that tells Goi, a poor samurai. He is astonished with imogayu (yam gruel) and wishes more of it, but his fellows and master laugh at him for wishing so. The master asks Goi to follow him eat more imogayu and he agrees. In a village, his master tells his servants to cook imogayu then tells Goi to eat. Seeing many people cooked it then looking at plentiful imogayu, he loses appetite as he is fed up. Thus, the research question is, how is satiation reflected on Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s Imogayu? Through qualitative method on economic, socio-political, and psychological points, this study underlines changing condition of Goi from wanting imogayu to becoming satiated. Through psychology of satiation by Jeff Galak, behavior could change when consumption face hedonistic enjoyment. Class difference is seen in how Goi’s wish does come true but its abundant amount makes him sick of seeing wasted material used. In conclusion, Goi’s satiation comes from how his simple wish faces lavish reality. His satisfaction changes into satiation after seeing luxury that he never senses at all.
