Abstract

Sea cucumbers which have the scientific name Holothuroidea are fishery commodities that have high economic value and are in great demand in the global market. Sea cucumbers are the main commodity of Benan Village which is the outermost island of Lingga district. Most of the people in Benan Village work as sea cucumber fishermen. As an aquatic resource owned by the village, sea cucumbers are still constrained in terms of handling so that it reduces the selling value of the dried sea cucumbers produced. Therefore, it is important to empower the people of Benan Village regarding the postharvest handling of sea cucumbers which aims to improve the quality as well as directly increase the selling value of that resources. Community empowerment activities are expected to add insight and improve the ability of the Benan Village community in handling sea cucumbers post-harvest. Empowerment was carried out through three methods, namely the distribution of questionnaires and discussions in the form of questions and answers with the Benan Village community group regarding the problem process in handling post-harvest sea cucumbers, which was carried out after distributing questionnaires to the sea cucumber aquaculture community, then education and discussion on good procedures were carried out in post-harvest handling. To improve the quality of this sea cucumber commodity, then in the third stage, mentoring and practice regarding the correct handling of sea cucumbers is carried out to produce good quality sea cucumbers from washing to packaging. The selection of discussion methods, lectures/education, and direct practice is considered effective in increasing public knowledge about the process of handling sea cucumbers postharvest properly and correctly, considering that the target stakeholders are sea cucumber farmers.

Abstract

The Riau Islands, with an area of 96% covering the ocean, has a coastal ecosystem consisting of mangrove ecosystems, seagrass ecosystems, and coral reef ecosystems that form a single unit producing ecosystem services. In general, the people of the Riau Islands Province have a fairly high dependence on direct benefits derived from the existence of coastal ecosystems without knowing other services/indirect benefits that can be provided by coastal ecosystems, resulting in over-exploitation that threatens environmental damage to these ecosystems. Conservation and counseling efforts need to be carried out so that the community can know and understand other services/benefits that can be provided by coastal ecosystems, namely by providing education related to coastal ecosystem services to high school students. High school students are generally the young generation of the nation's future successors who can be given an understanding of the roles and services of coastal ecosystems. Community service activities aim to increase public knowledge regarding coastal ecosystem services through lectures, videos, competitions, and pocketbooks to increase target insight. Community Service Activities provide material through lecture methods related to coastal ecosystem services supported by video screenings and poster competitions. Evaluation is done by comparing students' answers based on pre-test and post-test with the Quizizz application's help to increase correct answers > 50%. The results of the comparison of the Pre Test and Post Test showed an increase in the correct answers answered by students at SMAN 1 Bintan Timur. Community Service Activities have increased students' knowledge at SMAN 1 Bintan Timur, Bintan Regency. Power Point Media, Videos, Pocket Books, and Poster Contests effectively introduce coastal ecosystem services to students and high school students. Abstract

Abstract

Coral fish groups have a very strong dependence on coral reef ecosystems. Nusa Manggala Expedition was carried out for twenty days to explore basic data on the diversity of species of coral reef fish in the Liki, Bepondi, and Miossu Islands. Assessment of coral fish assemblages using Underwater Visual Census (UVC). Four hundred and thirty-two species of fifty families of reef fishes found during the 2nd session the Nusa Manggala expedition in Liki, Bepondi, and Miossu islands, northern Papua. Four species (Mobula tarapacana, M. alfredi, Oxymonacanthus longirostris, Bolbometopon muricatum, and Plectropomus areolatus) and one species (Cheilinus undulatus) categorized of IUCN as Vulnerable (VU) and Endangered (EN), respectively, were recorded in this study. There is unique pattern of reef fishes’ composition in small outer islands location in pristine location that shows Pomacentridae and Labridae were almost in the same number as Gobiidae, Apogonidae, Serranidae, Chaetodontidae, and Acanthuridae. In addition, the results showed that the Liki and Miossu islands and Bepondi Island included at the Coral Fish Diversity Index (CFDI) as an extraordinary and excellent category of marine fish, respectively. The results of the expedition showed that the Liki Islands and Miossu Island had an extraordinary category of marine fish, and Bepondi Island had an excellent category of sea fish. The culture of local people in Papua called "Sasi" prove to provide full protection to the ecosystem and have a positive impact on high diversity of reef fishes.

Abstract

Benan is one of the islands located in Senayang District, Lingga Regency, Riau Islands. Most of the people on Benan Island work as sea cucumber fishermen, this is because the existence of sea cucumbers on the island is still abundant. The processing of liquid waste originating from post-harvest sea cucumbers in the form of wet sea cucumbers and dry sea cucumbers has not been carried out optimally, even though the more raw materials for sea cucumbers are prepared at the time of postharvest, the more waste generated will also be. The problem with partners is that the liquid waste originating from the post-harvest preparation of sea cucumbers has not been carried out optimally. The solution given to partners is education through socialization of liquid waste processing from the results of postharvest preparation of sea cucumbers into local microorganisms (MOL) in the Benan village field trip group, so that postharvest processing of sea cucumbers becomes zero waste. The methods in the activities carried out are discussion and socialization. The results obtained after this service is increasing public knowledge about sea cucumber wastewater treatment.
