Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of self-explanation prompting to students’ germane load while studying mathematics in the multivariable calculus course. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with matching-only posttest-only control group design. The subject of the research consists of 72 first-year mathematics education undergraduate students. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in students’ germane load between students who implemented worked-example with self-explanation prompting and students who implemented worked-example without self-explanation prompting. However, it was revealed that the students' germane load was categorized high in both classes. It indicates that the worked-example method could foster students' germane load. Nonetheless, these results cannot be evidence that self-explanation prompting is capable to foster students' germane load. However, there is an association between germane load and learning objectives. When students achieve the learning objectives, then its learning method is able to foster the germane load. To assess the learning objectives, the posttest was arranged. The results stated that students who implemented the worked-example method with self-explanation prompting had better test scores than students who implemented the worked-example method without self-explanation prompting. This result was sufficient to provide evidence that the use of worked-example with self-explanation prompting could foster students’ germane load students in the multivariable calculus course. Keywords: Germane load, Worked-example, Self-explanation prompting

Abstract

Mathematics cannot be separated from everyday life. The use of mathematical concepts in cultural activities can be studied through the ethnomathematics program. However, ethnomathematics research may not be able to provide noticeable results, especially in constructing mathematical modelling for pedagogical purposes. Ethnomodelling later became one of the concepts introduced as an approach in ethnomathematics research. Based on the cultural aspect, the ability to predict a good day in farming is included in the holistic concept of culture because it belongs to the knowledge system and belief system (religion) in the universal element of culture. The research was conducted using an ethnomethodological approach and a realist ethnographic design. Based on this, this research was conducted to describe the ability of the Cigugur indigenous people in Kuningan Regency to predict what days are considered good to start farming activities. Data were collected by using observation techniques, in-depth interviews, documentation, and field notes. Data analysis techniques are carried out in stages through content analysis, triangulation, and pattern search. Based on the study of ethnomathematics, research that is able to describe the mathematical ideas and practices of the indigenous Cigugur community can be classified into several fundamental mathematical dimensions including counting, finding, measuring, designing, and explaining. The use of the ethnomodelling approach in research can describe several mathematical concepts used by the concepts of numbers, sets, relations, congruence, modulo, and mathematical modelling.

Abstract

The ability of students is obtained through the learning process of school subject matter in their classes. In particular, learning mathematics has an important role in facilitating students in obtaining various abilities, one of which is ability to think mathematically, an ability that has an important role for students in their lives, both in class and in their daily lives. This study aims to describe the mathematical thinking ability of 7th grade junior high school students in mathematics through a discovery learning model based on Stacey's classification, namely specialization, conjecture, generalization, and convincing. The research method is through qualitative studies by analyzing the answers of students who have gone through social arithmetic learning using discovery learning models. The results of the analysis obtained the findings of students' mathematical thinking ability in terms of specialization, conjecture, generalization, and convincing abilities, students were only identified using the conjecture, generalization, convincing abilities in solving problems/questions given by the educator, it does not appear that specialization ability are seen in all students, then there are problems in taking conjectures, where students are wrong in giving conjectures, this is due to the absence of errors in processing word/sentence information in the questions (word problem). The implication of this problem is that students must be trained in processing the information contained in story problems that involve interpreting words into mathematical symbols. Keywords: Discovery Learning, Mathematical thinking ability, social arithmetic, Word Problem.

Abstract

The critical thinking is an important skill for each students. The skill is needed in the process of solving mathematical problems. Students who have high critical thinking tend to analyze the problem situation that they met and evaluate the solution that they make either it is make sense or not. However, some reports show that the mathematical critical thinking of many vocational school students are still low and it should be increased. The research aims to analyze the students’ mathematical critical thinking based on gender factors in the topic of linear programming. The method of the research was qualitative with a descriptive approach. The subject were 2 vocational school students in Bandung, consisting of one female and one male. The research results show that, both female and male tend to meet mathematics critical thinking indicators, namely: (1) providing a simple explanation (2) checking the truth of a statement (3) observing the criteria and giving an explanation/ reason of the answers (4) making considerations and assess the answer. But when solving the problem, female student is more systematic and more careful than male student.
