Abstract

Every human being has equal right to obtain proper education which prospectively promotes decent employment and life prosperity. Vulnerable children and youth are potential human resources who should be encouraged to develop themselves and meaningfully contribute to society. This study aims to explore education service and learning for encouraging orphanage youth at Panti Asuhan BJ Habibie-Surabaya to be self-sustained and potentially contributes to society. Qualitative method is adopted to meet research objectives. The data are collected through direct participant observation in a community service. The study indicates that life skill education promotes life values which support the orphans to face life challenges. Being able to be self-educated, developed and discover positive life meaning can be potential investment for the orphans to survive. The growth of contributing and meaningful vulnerable youth requires a caring society who provides just and encouraging climate for the vulnerable to learn, develop and promote intergenerational learning.

Abstract

One of many development efforts is increasing today students development issues care and awareness. They are going to be the future nation developers and leaders. Thus, it is significant to promote understanding on various community development issues and stimulate their analytical thinking and problem solving. Video is one of many educational means to assist students’ learning process. It provides authentic materials and feeling experience of being there, instead of bringing the students to the real hazardous jungle. This study aims to analyze student-participants analysis on Dayak indigenous community issues and problem solving stimulation using a case study video. Qualitative research method is employed to achieve the research objectives. Thirty-five students are participating in the study. The studentparticipants written responses are analyzed by classifying them into emerging themes and categories, interpreting the underlying meaning and linking to the findings of existing projects, researches, and projects on development. The study reveals that the student-participants propose four main solutions. Those are environment and culture care, external development agents inclusion, capacity building and adaptive capacity development.

Abstract

EFL education shifts from teaching language core competences into promoting communicative competence and developing multiliteracies pedagogy. Through this learning mode, EFL learners can develop language, interpersonal communication, inter-cultural understanding as well as life learning skills. Group work learning assisted by technology use in EFL classroom is one of many approaches to equip EFL learners with such skills. During the process of learning in groups, EFL students experience and potentially learn social skills through their group dynamics. This study aims to explore group dynamic aspects in EFL learning: what the students experience and learn. The study adopts qualitative research methods. The data are collected through students’ narrative texts revealing their experiences in working in groups to create video. The study finds that in accomplishing group tasks, the students are learning some aspects. The first is the identification process, in which they are aligning themselves to the shared identity, emotion, goals, character of groups (self to group identification) as well as group to self identification. The second aspect is the students are learning cooperatively and collaboratively in team development process. The third aspect is learning leadership and organizational management, in which they are learning structure, norms, rules and social system in group.

Abstract

The success and failure of a destination tend to rest on its’ capacity to satisfy the visitors. Listening to visitors’ appraisal and voices is vital in community-based tourism development. This study aims to explore WPP Dalegan visitors’ voices. The data are collected through Dalegan visitors’ online reviews and direct observation. The study finds that Dalegan has a high competitive advantage as family recreational destination as it is cheap, reachable, accessible, has various local-traditional-cheap food, beautiful calm beach and soft white sand as a playing and learning ground for children. Despite its’ comfortable image, some visitors voice unsatisfied services, facilities, nature-caused and human-caused threats. The study also illuminates that Dalegan destination branding is not only influenced by its’ capacity to attract visitors by its’ beautiful marine nature, but also local community characters, community education and values. The study indicates that to develop tourism destination, local potentials are not the only determinant keys. It needs to be supported by other determining factors. One of those factors is tourists’ voices on their impression, comments, satisfaction and dissatisfaction feelings. Linking potential resources of destination and tourists’ meaningful experience can be challenging as different tourists may have different perspectives, wants and satisfaction-dissatisfaction levels.
