Abstract

Didimus Jehadu. Maksimianus 2020. A Critical Discourse Analysis on Barack Obama Speech to the Congress. English Study Program, faculty of Foreign Languages, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. Supervisor: I Komang Sulatra S.SM. Hum; Co- supervisor: Dr. I Gusti Agung Sri Rwa Jayantini.S.S.M.Hum. The aims of the study are to find the Critical Discourse and language used by the Barack Obama Speech To the congress. Discourse is known as spoken or written language in a social context. The theory of types Critical discourse analysis (henceforth CDA) subsumes a variety of approaches towards the social analysis of discourse (Fairclough and Wodak 1997, Pecheuk M. 1982, Wodak and Meyer 2001. The objectives of this study were finding the structure of the next and describing the ideology that applied on Barack Obama Speech. This study used qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. Based on the analysis, it is found that there are fiftythree Fourteen Barack Obama Speech there are structur Obama Speech Genre (26,41%), Framing (16,98%), Backgrounding/Foregrounding (3,77%), Presuposition (5,66%), Topicalisation (9,43%), Agency (3,77%), Delition/Ommision (1,88%), Insinuation (1,88%), Connotation (1,88%), Register (3,77%), Modality (11,32%), Opening (5,66%), Content(3,77%), Closing(3,77%). As the result of this analysis all the structural aspect of the theory are applied in Barack Obama Speech text to the congress, Can (1,1%), Could (1,1%), Would (3,5%), Must (20,2%), Will (64,2%), Should (9,5%).

Abstract

This research focused on analysing the derivational process of suffixation found in the novel entitled “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” Observation and qualitative method were applied in this study. Observation method used in collecting the data. The steps of colleting the data were first, reading the novel carefully, second finding and listing all complex words that contains derivational suffixes, then identifying and classifying the derivational suffixes. Meanwhile, qualitative method used to analysing the data. There were two steps in analysing the data, namely identifying and describing the data by using some words and presented by using tree diagram. This research used theory from Plag (2002) and supported by theory from McCharty (2002). The result of this research shows that there are some derivational suffixes found in the data source. They are suffixes –ment, -ion/-ation, -er/or, -ance, -ist, -ism, -ing, -hood, -ity, -(e)ry, -ant, -ful, -ship, -ize, -able/-ible, -less, -al/-ial/-ual, -ive/-ative, -ish, -ic, -ary, -ous, ed, and –ly. These suffixes are divided into four classes of suffixation namely, noun maker, verb maker, adjective maker and adverb maker.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics is the study of language related with social conditions, which is related to the general function of language as a means of communication. This study concern on the slang word found in Megan Thee Stallion song lyrics on Tina Snow album. The aims of this study are to find out the types of slang words and the process of creating slang words found in Megan Thee Stallion song lyrics on Tina Snow album. This study chose Tina Snow album by Megan Thee Stallion as data source. There were two theories used in analyzing the data, first the theory proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007: 8) to analyse the types of slang word, and to analyse the word formation process of creating slang word used theory by Mattielo (2008: 72-154). In analysing the data, this study used descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study shows that there are two types of slang found in Tina snow album by Megan Thee Stallion song lyrics namely, primary slang and secondary slang. In the types of slang this study found primary slang and secondary slang. In the word formation process of creating slang word, this study found 5 types from 15 types of word formation process, there are: compounding, reduplicatives, acronyms and initialisms, blending, clipping.

Abstract

This study focused on analysing the functions and the process of derivational suffixes found in the novel The Little Prince written by Antonie De-Saint Exupery. This study used quantitative method to account the percentage of the functions of derivational suffixes using table and qualitative method to identify and to give clear explanation about the functions and the process of derivational suffixes using description that is related to the theories proposed by Lieber (2009) and McCarthy (2002) which is used to discuss the process of derivational suffixes. To describe the result of this research it used formal and informal method. The functions of derivational suffixes consists of three types, such as category-changing lexeme formation, meaning-changing lexeme formation, and both category meaning-changing lexeme formation.

Abstract

This research discusses about affixes in selected song lyrics of Westlife. The researcher analysed twenty song’s lyrics of Westlife which is used as data source. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The purpose of this research is to identify the derivational affixes found in selected song lyrics of Westlife. The result of this research shows 78 data of derivational affixes were found in selected song lyrics of Westlife. They were categorized into prefix and suffix. Prefix category found from the data source are prefix im-and mis-. Meanwhile, suffixes found are –ly, -ize, -ship, -ish, -ion, -ness, -less, -ful, -ous, -ence, -ing, and -en. All affixes found are classified into derivational prefix are im-, and mis- and derivational suffixes are –ly, -ize, -ship, -ish, -ion, -ness, -less, -ful, -ous, -ence, -ing, and -en. Those affixes give explanation about forming new word and new meaning in Westlife selected song’s lyrics.

Abstract

The study concerns with derivational suffixes in the novel “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. Descriptive qualitative method were used to identify the types and process of derivational suffixes found in the data source. This study found 213 data, consist of 23 data (11%) derivational suffixes Noun to Adjective, which were: -ish, -ous, -ful. 51 data (24%) derivational suffixes Verb to Noun, which were: -ance, -er, -ion. 16 data (8%) derivational suffixes Adjective to Noun, which was: -ness. 20 data (9%) derivational suffixes Verb to Adjective, which was: -able. 101 data (47%) derivational suffixes Adjective to Adverb, which was: -ly. The last one was 2 data (1%) derivational suffixes Noun to Verb, which was: -ish. This study concluded that the most accurrence data that was found in this analysis was derivational suffixes Adjective to Adverb.

Abstract

This study aimed (1) to find out the types of code switching found in Cinta Laura’s utterances on Deddy's corner program in Trans TV and (2) to analyse the reason of code switching found in Cinta Laura’s utterances on Deddy's corner program in Trans TV. The data were utterances spoken by Cinta Laura in four videos taken from Trans TV Youtube Channel. This study used qualitative method in analysing the data. The data were collected by observation method through watching, listening and transcribing the utterances. There were two basic theories used in this study. The first theory is taken from Poplack (1980) about types of code switching and the second theory is taken from Hoffman (1991) about reasons of code switching. The result of the study shows 23 utterances of code switching. Those are intra-Sentential switching with ten 10 utterances with percentage 43,5%, 9 data of extra-sentential switching or tag switching with percentage 39,13%, 4 data of inter-sentential switching with percentage 17,39%. The most dominant reason is interjection (inserting sentence filler and sentence connector), the second reason of being emphatic about something, the third is talking about particular topic, the lowest occurrence of the reason was repetition used for clarification and intention of clarifying speech content.

Abstract

This study aims at (1) finding out the types of taboo utterances found in American Gangster movie, and (2) analysing the function of taboo utterances found in American Gangster movie. The data of this study were taken from a movie entitled American Gangster. The genre of this movie is crime drama. This study used descriptive qualitative method, by describing the word or phrase of taboo words from the movie. The qualitative method is applied in order to give clear analysis on the data according to the theory proposed by Battistella (2005) and Wardhaugh (2006). The result of this study shows that all types and functions of taboo words were found. First, there are four types of taboo words are epithets, profanity, vulgarity, obscenity. Vulgarity is the most dominant type used by the characters in the movie. Second, there are four functions of taboo words, such as; to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be provocative, to mock authority. The most function of taboo words found in the movie is to show contempt. It is employed by characters in the movie. To support the analysis were used some dictionaries of taboo words. The phenomenon that usually happens in our life which nowadays many people used taboo words in their daily communication and it is one of the most efficient ways to expressing feeling in any situation.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the suffixes forming nouns from verbs used in the novel The Art of Racing in the Rain and analyze the process of those nominal suffixes. The data were taken from the novel The Art Racing in The Rain by Garth Stein. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The study combined two theories, those are the theory proposed by Katamba (1994), which was used to find out and classify the types of nouns derived from verbs, and the theory from McCarthy (2002), which is used to find out how the process of suffixation is found in the novel. The observation method was applied in collecting the data with several techniques, such as; reading and note-taking. Formal and informal methods were used in presenting the finding of this study. This study found 241 data which divided into six (6) suffixes. Those were 10 data of suffix -ation (4,1%), 18 data of suffix -er (7,5%), 125 data of suffix -ing (51,9%), 58 data of suffix -ion (24,1%), 29 data of suffix -ment (12,0%), and 1 data of suffix -ee (0,4%). Moreover, in this study, all those data were obtained in the process of the class-changing meaning of the word.
