Abstract

This survey study wasdan guru intended  to investigate the characteristics of effective English teachers in Kabupaten Pacitan based on students’ and teachers’ perceptions. The study involved  108 students and 12 teachers who were randomly selected from the available data from Education Office of  Kabupaten Pacitan, East Java. The data were collected using students’ questionnaire and  teacher-self assessment covering 37 items and interview guide asking about students’ and teachers’ perceptions about characteristics of effective Junior High School English teachers in Kabupaten Pacitan. The findings show that  students and  teachers have different perceptions on the characteristics of effective English teachers.Penelitian survey ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik dari guru Bahasa Inggris yang efektif di Kabupaten Pacitan berdasarkan persepsi guru dan siswa. Penelitian ini melibatkan 108 siswa dan 12 guru yang dipilih secara acak dari data yang diperoleh di kantor Dinas Pendidikan Kabupaten Pacitan, Jawa Timur. Pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner siswa dan penilaian individu guru yang mencakup 37 soal dan panduan wawancara yang menanyakan tentang persepsi siswa6 dan guru tentang karakteristik dari guru Bahasa Inggris SMP yang efektif di Kabupaten Pacitan. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa siswa dan guru mempunyai persepsi yang berbeda terhadap karakteristik dari guru Inggris yang efektif.

Abstract

As English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, it is expected that they should have good ability in four skills of English, including writing skill. However, errors are still found in students’ written works. This paper examines the different types of writing errors made by 10 Indonesian undergraduate students who were enrolled in an IELTS preparation class. Descriptive qualitative research was employed in this study. The errors in the term papers were identified and classified accordingly. The students’ works were assessed based on four aspects: task achievement, cohesion and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range, and accuracy. The result of this study showed that the highest percentage of students’ errors was in terms of lexical resource and grammatical range (accuracy), followed by three other common errors: singular or plural, word choice, and punctuation. Regarding to the task achievement, in Task 1, most of the students addressed the task but they didn't cover all the information needed. While in Task 2, some students presented clear opinions but with limited and inadequately developed ideas and gave no conclusion. Furthermore, for the results of cohesion and coherence in Task 1, most students showed good logical sequence and overall progression but with faulty cohesion devices. However in Task 2, some students presented either incoherent or illogical ideas or information. These results contribute as fruitful insights for language learners who want to enhance the IELTS comprehension, particularly writing performance.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of extensive reading to encourage students’ reading skill as well as students’ attitude toward it. Descriptive qualitative research design was employed in this sudy. The data obtained through classroom observation, questionnaire, and interview. The participant of this study were a class of first semester students of a private university in Ponorogo. The findings showed that extensive reading is useful  in teaching reading. It is known that the students extensive reading improves their vocabulary and their reading comprehension. To monitor students’ extensive reading, the lecturer asked the students to write a reding report once a week. Therefore, group discussion also implemented in the extensive reading class to activated students’ critical thinking. Besides, the result also showed that extensive reading assist students to comprehend new terms in several fields sucha as law, economics, health, politics etc. Overall, extensive reading help students to open their mind toward current issues and also boost students’ reading ability.

Abstract

Receiving information begins with listening. EFL learners at universities should master listening for academic purposes with appropriate strategies. This article examined the strength of the bottom-up strategy in teaching listening for the academic purpose of the third-semester female students in the Department of English Language Education, the University of Darussalam Gontor, which is a pesantren -based university. This research utilized a quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. The participants involved 14 who were regarded in English language teaching.  They were tested by pre-and post-treatment listening for academic purposes. The data were analyzed by paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant inequality between the mean score of the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the post-test of learners was improved than theirs in the pre-test. Thus, the female learners in this research achieved well in promoting teaching listening for academic purposes after being treated using a bottom-up strategy.

Abstract

This paper aims to review some previous studies and theories related to the effect of extensive reading to boost students’ reading ability. Moreover, good reading ability is an important skill that should be mastered by students. It is used to enhance students’ knowledge and reading ability. However, students facing several difficulties in upgrading their reading skill, such as limited time to read, uninteresting reading materials given in the classroom, and unsupportive reading environment. Thus, this condition made students to have low reading ability. Extensive reading is chosen as a method to overcome students’ reading problems and difficulties. It is implemented by asking students to read as much as possible what they like outside the classroom. The purpose of this activity is to create supportive reading atmosphere for students. Furthermore, this paper will describe students’ difficulties in reading, the definition of extensive reading, and the advantages of implementing extensive reading in teaching reading. Extensive reading is also proven by some experts as an effective method to assist students reading challenges.

Abstract

Extensive reading becomes familiar among students since this activity eases them to read anytime and anywhere they like. Besides, they were also given the freedom to read any kind of book genre. The goal of this activity is to assist students in improving their reading skills. This research design is a descriptive qualitative where the respondents are twelve students of English Language Education Department. This research aims to investigate the students’ perspective toward extensive reading. The data collection was done by interviewing the respondents, doing field observation, and analyzing documents to confirm the data to support the triangulation. The results of the study showed that extensive reading was able to improve students' reading comprehension, increased students’ interest in reading, and built students’ awareness of the importance of literacy and having good reading habits. Furthermore, it should be highlighted that the students and lecturers have the capability and chance to produce readable sources to promote extensive reading at the level of elementary, junior, and senior high school or even at the university level.

Abstract

The role of the teacher nowadays is not only to provide content-based conceptual knowledge but also provide knowledge about how to communicate with others. In teaching today’s generation, teachers require some special expertise. Education and training of the next generation to cope with change has become a challenge for educators as well as parents. This study aims to examine the characteristics of professional Civics teachers. There are several components that can be used as research references in formulating the characteristics of professional Civics teachers. However, the authors focus on one main component that will be studied in this study, namely interpersonal skills. A good relationship between students and teachers will have an impact on the success of learning in the classroom. This study used literature study. It is done by collecting data from books and journals that are relevant to the research study. After these data are obtained, the authors take journals or books as the main reference in formulating the characteristics of professional Civics teachers. In addition, the authors only focus on research sources that include interpersonal skills of Civics teachers. The results to be achieved in this study are to obtain several characteristics regarding Civics teachers which emphasize the teachers’ interpersonal skills. It is expected that after these characteristics are formulated, they will contribute to increasing the professionalism of Civics teachers in 5.0 societys.

Abstract

Indek literasi seringkali digunakan sebagai instrumen keberhasilan pendidikan di suatu negera. Masyarakat yang memiliki minat dan budaya baca tinggi diyakini memiliki tingkat literasi yang tinggi pula. Namun, fakta menyatakan adanya penurunan tingkat literasi masyarakat. Berdasarkan survey lapangan, mitra yang merupakan Yayasan Kyai Ageng Mohammad Besari yang bertugas memelihara dan mengelola wisata religi masjid dan makam Kyai Mohammad Hasan Besari di Desa Tegalsari, Kecamatan Jetis, Kabupaten Ponorogo memiliki fasilitas pendukung literasi terbatas terkait dengan koleksi buku maupun akses terhadap buku murah dan berkualitas. Solusi dari permasalah tersebut adalah pengabdian masyarakat yang fokus pada pendirian taman baca dan pelaksanaan kegiatan pendukung, seperti acara bedah buku dan penyuluhan UMKM diyakini dapat meningkatkan minat dan budaya baca guna meningkatkan daya tarik wisata religi di masjid dan makam Kyai Ageng Mohammad Besari. Metode untuk mendirikan taman baca adalah metode ADDIE. Hasil dari monitoring dan evaluasi yang dilakukan di akhir program pengabdian masayrakat ini menunjukkan bahwa pendirian taman baca memberikan suasana yang berbeda terhadap kegiatan wisata religi dan mitra antusias dalam mengikuti rangkaian kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat.
