Abstract

This study aims to describe the development of reference services at the Library of Universitas Indonesia. The research discussed about innovation in the development of new activities in the reference services. Analyzing reference services from librarians’ point of view concerning the new activities in reference services, including attitudes and policies toward activities. This research takes a descriptive qualitative approach and uses semiotic analysis refering to Semiology of Roland Bathes concerning significance from two stage,  denotation and connotation, for analyzing the result of interviews. The results showed that the Universitas Indonesia Library reference service provides some new activities. Librarians become more active, revealed to be closer  to users, and transformation of information technology is seen as one of the competitive need to accompany the development of knowledge. Transfer media eventually have implications not on technology but rather to communication of reference services in the Universitas Indonesia Library.

Abstract

This study discusses whether the reference service owned by the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Library can be used as a representation of other college libraries. This representation can be seen based on user perception in the University of Indonesia Library of the reference service and also seen from the strategy undertaken by the University of Indonesia Library in improving the quality of their reference service. This research is a qualitative research using case study method. The results of this study indicate that the reference service Library University of Indonesia can be used as a representation of the library of universities, because the University of Indonesia Library managed to make their reference services become more active and more innovative by bringing various innovations in it to get closer to the user. In addition, users also express their opinions regarding reference services in the University of Indonesia Library, this will further strengthen the purpose of this research is a reference service as a representation of the University of Indonesia Library. It is expected that with the innovation made by UI Library to its reference service will make the reference service become the representation of the library itself especially from the user side, because the representation of the reference service is very important to realize the main purpose of university in Indonesia known as Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi is education, research and community service.

Abstract

Teknologi informasi dan komunikasi telah merubah moda layanan referensi di Perpustakaan Universitas Indonesia (UI). Perubahan selalu membawa implikasi dalam berbagai aspek. Penelitian membahas tentang fenomena transformasi moda layanan referensi dari klasik menuju digital di Perpustakaan UI. Tujuannya untuk menganalisis fenomena digitalisasi moda layanan referensi, dengan fokus pada pemustaka yang mengalami transisi sosial dalam pemanfaatan layanan referensi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif yang bersifat deskriptif, dengan jenis penelitian interpretif-konstruktivistis, dan metode fenomenologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan moda layanan referensi digital direpresentasikan dengan munculnya program-program layanan referensi baru. Transformasi moda layanan referensi klasik menuju digitalisasi dimaknai oleh pemustaka (sebagai komunitas digital immigrant) sebagai fenomena yang tidak dapat dihindari pada era digital yang terus berkembang dan berubah cepat. Transisi sosial yang dialami pemustaka seperti adaptasi dengan berbagai format dan karakteristik e-resources, munculnya layanan referensi baru, serta kendala yang dihadapi perlu mendapat ruang yang diakomodasikan oleh pustakawan.
