ABSTRACT: âConflicts among the Local Political Elites in South Sulawesi: A Historical Perspectiveâ. Conflict of elite is an interesting study for the social sciences experts and practitioners since the last time until the latest period. Conflict among the local political elites often appeared also in the political landscape of Indonesia. Conflicts among the local political elites have become a new phenomenon in the era of Reform (1998 to date) that is rarely found in the past, whether in the time of Old Order (1959-1966) or in the time of New Order (1966-1998). This research aims to discover the existence of continuity and shift pattern by tracing the history of the conflict. Based on the search, assessment, and analysis of the conflict between the local political elite, both in the period before the colonial, the era of colonial, and in the time of Indonesian independence (1945-1950), the results showed that there is continuity and shifting patterns of elite conflict from every age in South Sulawesi. Continuity patterns of conflict can be seen from the conflicts between tribes/regions in the seizure of power that occurred since colonial periods until today. Shifting patterns of conflict can be seen from the changes of elite conflicts that previously vertical (group of nobles with the common people) into the horizontal conflicts, the conflicts between interest groups that are not anymore based on social strata, as it did occur in the previously last times ago. KEY WORD: Conflicts among the elites, local politics, South Sulawesi, conflict history, continuity, vertical conflict, and horizontal conflict.About the Author: Dr. Jayadi Nas adalah Staf Pengajar pada FISIP UNHAS (Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik, Universitas Hasanuddin) Makassar, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan Km.10 Makassar 90245, Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia.
