Abstract

A high-fat diet leads to increasing intake of fatty acid in liver, making it susceptible to lipid peroxidation and free radical release. Malondialdehyde is a common biomarker for lipid peroxidation. Increasing free radicals should be balanced with the antioxidants in order to prevent oxidative stress. This study aim was to measured the effectiveness of bay leaf extract (Eugenia polyantha) in lowering MDA levels in hyperlipidemia rats. This study was an experimental study using 20 male rats divided into 4 groups. All rats were induced hyperlipidemia with high-fat diet for 12 days. KP was sacrificed in the next day after the feeding of high fat. KN administered by aquades 2 ml / day (peroral / po), P1 administered by bay leaves extract 1.08 g / day (p.0) and P2 received simvastatin treatment dose 0,0018 g / 150 g BB / day (p. 0). The results showed MDA levels in KP, KN, P1 and P2 were respectively 7.79; 7.07; 6.49; and 7.21 nmol / ml. One way ANOVA test showed p value was 0,073 (

Abstract

Kegagalan fungsi liver yang akut banyak disebabkan oleh penyalahgunaan parasetamol atau Acetaminophren. Parasetamol dosis tinggi menyebabkan nekrosis liver dan kegagalan fungsi liver. Pada liver, parasetamol diubah menjadi N-acetyl-para-benzo-quinine imine (NAPQI), yang meningkatkan stress oksidatif dan disfungsi mitokondria. Disfungsi liver ditandai dengan peningkatan enzim SGOT dan SGPT serta rasio keduanya. Penggunaan rimpang Curcuma zedoaria dipercaya dapat memberikan proteksi terhadap liver. Kandungan antioksidan fenolik di dalamnya memiliki kemampuan menangkal radikal hidroksil, sehingga diharapkan dapat memulihkan stres oksidatif, melindungi terhadap paparan parasetamol. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh ekstrak rimpang Curcuma zedoaria setelah dan sebelum pemberian parasetamol dosis yang tinggi, melalui kadar enzim SGOT dan SGPT, serta rasio keduanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan 24 ekor tikus jantan dewasa (Rattus norvegicus) yang dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok yaitu KN; KP yang diberikan parasetamol dosis tinggi 1,35 g/ Kg BB; kelompok perlakuan yang diberi ekstrak Curcuma zedoaria dosis 105mg/ 200 g BB pada 2 jam sesudah (P1) dan sebelum pemberian parasetamol (P2). Analisis data menggunakan uji Kruskal-Wallis dan ANOVA dengan nilai p sebesar 0,019 dan 0,027. Penurunan kadar SGOT dan SGPT terendah pada kelompok P2 yaitu 156,06 IU dan 151,90 IU. Rasio SGOT/SGPT tertinggi pada KP sebesar 2,21 IU/L.

Abstract

Paparan sinar inframerah Near Infra Red (NIR) mengandung efek panas dengan panjang gelombang 0.78 – 3 μm. Penelitian ini bertujuan melihat kemampuan NIR menghambat pertumbuhan Escherichia coli dengan menggunakan variasi waktu paparan terhadap hambatan pertumbuhan. Metode penelitian eksperimental acak lengkap digunakan dengan empat kelompok perlakuan dari biakan Escherichia coli, yaitu K0, K1, K2 dan K3. Kelompok dibedakan berdasarkan waktu paparan infra merah dalam menit. Pada perlakuan 1(K1) yaitu diberikan paparan selama 25 menit, K2 diberikan paparan 30 menit, dan K3 diberi paparan 35 menit, sedangkan kelompok kontrol (K0) tanpa diberikan paparan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada perlakuan K3, jumlah bakteri Escherichia coli yang tumbuh lebih sedikit apabila dibandingkan dengan perlakuan lainnya, sebesar 131 koloni. Uji statistik dengan ANOVA didapatkan p value sebesar 0,000 yang berarti ada pemberian infra merah berbagai variasi waktu berpengaruh terhadap jumlah koloni Escherichia coli. Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh maka waktu paparan terbaik yang diberikan paparan NIR adalah selama 35 menit.

Abstract

Candidiasis is an infection caused by fungal Candida albicans. The incidence of candidiasis is pretty high in Indonesia. Candida albicans develop their pathogenicity by several ways so that it can invade and escape from the immune system. The host’s immune system must always be vigilant to recognized antigen through various receptors, activation of the transduction pathway and activation of various immune cells. But as organisms that struggle to survive, Candida also develops mechanisms to escape the immune response. There are so many articles have written the immune response against candidiasis, this review aims to understand more and updating information about the biological processes of pathogenicity of fungi and the mechanism of Candida albicans in escaping immune responses, the role of each innate molecule and immune cell, and clinical aspect to Candida albicans infections. We already facing the big challenges against therapy of fungal infection, so by understanding the escape mechanism of Candida albicans, it is possible to developed antifungal or Candida vaccine in the future, therefore the incidence of candidiasis can be suppressed.

Abstract

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is autoimmune disease that attacks joints and synovial tissues. Rheumatoid Arthritis is characterized by inflammation that involves production of cytokines such as Interleukin 6 (IL-6). Increasing of interleukin 6 has correlation with activity and progressivity of the disease. This research was designed to know whether IL- 6 could be used as indicator progressivity of RA. The method that used for measuring IL-6 level is ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay), using the principle antigen-antibody binding. In early stage there were 9 persons (S01, S02, S03, S04, S07, S08, S09, S10 and S14) with of IL-6 level (mean : 3.640 pg/mL), intermediate stage there were 3 persons (S06, S13 and S15) with IL-6 level (mean : 12.453 pg/mL), late stage : 3 persons (S05, S11 and S12) with IL-6 level (mean : 59.349 pg/mL).

Abstract

Increasing levels of blood cholesterol is one of the risk factors for atherosclerosis. Currently, experts have been trying used herbal medicine as an alternative treatment of atherosclerosis. One of the highlights is the use of celery stalks. Celery is generally used as a flavouring dish. In addition, celery stalks are believed able to reduce cholesterol levels because they contain flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. This study was aim to determine the effect of celery stalk ethanol extract to reduce LDL an increase of HDL level in rats after fed high-fat diet. Randomized Post Test Only Control Group Design was used to measure the HDL and LDL blood serum levels of male Wistar (Rattus norvegicus) rats fed a high-fat diet. This study was used 27 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into 3 groups; K1 was only given regular feed and water, K2 was given a high-fat diet and water, K3 was given a high-fat diet and celery stalk extract at a dose of 75mg/kg BW/day for 14 days. The data were analysed by ANOVA test and Tukey HSD test. The results of the ANOVA test showed a significance value of p-value of LDL = 0.000 and HDL p-value = 0.536. Celery stalk extract (Apium graviolens L) had an effect on decreasing LDL levels but not on increasing HDL blood serum levels of white Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) given high-fat diet.
