Abstract

The objective of the study is “to describe how deixis are used in Donald Trump’s Speech to UN General Assembly”. The design of this study is a descriptive qualitative design. Source of data collection in this research is the text of Donald Trump’s Speech to UN General Assembly done in 2018. After collecting data, the researcher found and selected data that the most of sentences or words have deixis types. After the data were reduced, then the next step is to display data, then, presenting data. Data summarizing was a means to know the result of the study. Here, the researcher made conclusion after completely identifying and analyzing the types of deixis and the most dominant one found in the speech. Based on data analysis, the researcher found five kinds of deixis in Donald Trump’s Speech to UN General Assembly, they are person deixis, spatial/place deixis, temporal/time deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. The total number of deixis in this speech are 344 utterances. The deixis that mostly used by the Donald Trump is the person deixis with the frequency of 279 (81.10%).Keywords:

Abstract

Pragmatics gives different interpretation of meaning even when it is not said or written. This study was using descriptive qualitative approach. The objects of the study were non-native English speakers at the fourth semester of post-graduate program (S2) majoring English Education of Semarang State University in the academic year 2012/2013. The unit of analysis of this study were utterances which contain the observance and non-observance of Grice’s cooperative principle. Furthermore, to know how they were aware of those principles, a pragmatic awareness test was given to each participant. Based on the test, most participants were aware enough of Grice’s cooperative principle. From all utterances, most participants appeared to observe the maxim of relation. It can be inferred that they tried to answer the question with relevant answer. The realization of non-observance of Grice’s cooperative principle was mostly shown in flouting the maxim of quantity that they gave more or less information than it was needed. Moreover, we can infer that non-native English speakers who were aware of Grice’s cooperative principle would be easier to realize it in their conversations because they understood the concept of how to create successful, effective and efficient communication.

Abstract

The purpose of this Community Service (CS) is to provide an understanding of the function of the mangrove forests that have various benefits for the preservation of coastal ecosystems and clean up inorganic waste in the coastal areas. The method of community service was lecturing, demonstration, counseling and interview. The CS results were high awareness of the community to do the maintenance of the former pond land and garbage in the watershed and lastly mangrove trees can grow well. Suggestions for further CS is the need to make a proposal for sponsorship so that sustainability of these activities will occur.Keywords: community empowerment, coastal ecosystem, mangrove

Abstract

When someone gives a compliment, the hearer should response it to smoothen the relationship and communication. This study attempts to explore how the University of Balikpapan Students respond to compliment. This was a qualitative study. The data in this study were collected using a discourse completion task (DCT) to elicit compliment responses from students in University of Balikpapan as the participants. Moreover, the data were analyzed with the Continua of Compliment Response Strategies proposed by Tran (2007). It was found that most participants used variation of compliment response strategies. However, they tended to use the acceptance to denial continuum responses.

Abstract

Sebagai dasar dari mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia, keterampilan berbahasa sangat penting untuk dikuasai. Jika siswa kurang menguasai keterampilan berbahasa, maka akan berpengaruh kepada pengetahuan siswa yang lain, karena keterampilan berbahasa juga dasar dari berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keterampilan berbahasa yang terdiri dari keterampilan menyimak, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis siswa paket C SKB Balikpapan Timur serta hambatan siswa untuk menguasai keterampilan berbahasa dan solusi dari hambatan tersebut. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data penelitian ini melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa panduan observasi, wawancara, telepon genggam, alat tulis, catatan lapangan, dan kartu data. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik analisis data berupa reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan serta verifikasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahawa secara umum keterampilan berbahasa siswa paket C SKB Balikpapan Timur dalam kategori cukup. Untuk masing-masing aspek didapatkan hasil bahwa keterampilan menyimak siswa baik, keterampilan membaca baik, keterampilan berbicara kurang, dan keterampilan menulis kurang. Hambatan siswa dalam menguasai keterampilan berbahsa adalah tidak adanya buku pedoman pembelajara secara fisik, guru tidak menjelaskan materi secara fisik, guru tidak mengembangkan keterampilan berbahasa yang telah dimiliki siswa, siswa tidak tertarik dengan guru, dan siswa tidak tertarik dengan materi yang diajarkan.

Abstract

Masalah pada penelitian ini adalah kurangnya keahlian seseorang ketika melakukan sebuah penolakan sehingga menimbulkan perselisihan atau prasangka kurang baik. Oleh karena itu, keahlian seseorang ketika melakukan sebuah penolakan sangat berpengaruh terhadap respons yang didapatkan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan strategi tindak tutur penolakan dalam interaksi pedagang dan pembeli di Plaza Kebun Sayur Balikpapan. Penelitian ini melibatkan pedagang maupun pembeli yang melakukan proses tawar menawar. Data diperoleh dengan melakukan teknik simak catat, instrumen data dalam penelitian ini yaitu dengan menggunkan human instrument, serta data dianalisis menggunakan tiga tahapan analisis data. Hasil penelitian diperoleh 42 strategi penolakan yang terbagi atas 4 strategi penolakan, yaitu (1) strategi penolakan langsung sebanyak 1 data, dengan frekuensi 2%. (2) strategi penolakan tidak langsung sebanyak 32 data, dengan frekuensi 76%. (3) strategi penolakan tambahan sebanyak 4 data, dengan frekuensi 10% (4) strategi penolakan kombinasi sebanyak 5 data, dengan frekuensi 12%.
