Abstract

ABSTRACT: The “wayang kulit” (shadow play) is a traditional art of theatre that popular in Java and Bali, and considered as a multidimensional state of art which consists dimension of theatrical, literature, philosophy, moral education, and not to mention visual arts and crafts dimension as well, in which is the main discussion of this paper. There are several styles of Javanese “wayang kulit” based on their geographical area. Among those, Cirebon style possesses unique visualization which has resemblance to early phase of Islamic era “wayang” puppet. One of the character transformations done which includes personality and visual descriptions happened to the Priest Drona, the vital character of Mahabharata that role as “guru” (teacher) to both Pandawas and Kurawas, who was trapped inside dilemma between his warring disciples. In the adaptation version of Javanese shadow play, for some various and speculative reasons, Drona has been altered into an antagonistic character, and reached its extreme point of alteration as an absolute evil character in Cirebon version. Cirebon’s history, culture, and plural society gave significant influence on this. Drona puppets themselves have unique and specific visual attributes in comparison to other main characters puppets, and possess highly symbolic meaning beneath them. These facts told us that the character has a great significance. Later, these negative connotations of Drona was being sharpened and escalated in accordance of socio-historical events and local phenomenon, thus producing visual differentiation within the Drona puppets.KEY WORDS: “Wayang kulit”, Drona character, Cirebon area, visual, differentiations, attributes, socio-historical events, and symbolic meaning.    About the Authors: Moh Isa Pramana Koesoemadinata, M.Sn. is a Student of Doctoral Program at the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology), Jalan Ganesha No.10, Tamansari, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

Since early centuries of Christian calendar, the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana have widely spread across the Nusantara Archipelago.  By the time these epics arrived here, they were not presented in their genuine forms, but had been adopted and localized in order to approach the natives.  The adaptation process included taking the shadow theatrical form, translating and interpretating the stories, and transforming character and visual descriptions which were manifested into puppet form.            One of the character transformations which includes personality and visual descriptions was done to Priest Drona, the vital character roled as guru to both Pandawas and Kurawas, who was trapped inside the dilemma among his disciples.  In Javanese version, Drona has been transformed into an ambiguous, mischievous, and slightly humorous character.  In Cirebon version, Drona was depicted as an evil character who provoked the Battle of Bharata yuddha.  Drona puppet himself has unique and specific visual attributes compared to other puppet main characters, and each form of puppet Drona possess a high symbolic meaning beneath them.  The problem is how do the visual attributes of each puppet tell us about the character’s complexity? This paper analyzes every visual variation of Drona leather puppet in Cirebon using the Art Criticism methods and semiotics referring to general Javanese Shadow Puppetry performance.  This analysis proves the complexity of the character based on the differences of cloth, accessories and other visual attributes from Cirebon perspective. Keywords: Cirebonese leather puppets, character, Drona, visual attributes

Abstract

Home industry food products are unable to compete on display shelves because the packaging is less eye-catching. Some factors include the color is not flashy and the illustration/ photo is less attractive. The research that will be conducted aims to identify color combinations and illustrations/ photos in the Primary Display Panel (PDP) packaging that attracts consumers' attention. This study uses a quantitative approach. The combination of color factors and images (illustrations / photos) will be tested with the Eye-tracking method and a questionnaire processed using the ANOVA method. The study consisted of three stages: first data collection I, both data processing and analysis I; and the final stage of equality testing and conclusion drawing. From the study, it was revealed that the preferences obtained from the questionnaire differed in results with eye tracking observations. In other words, it is not always what consumers like as what consumers observe. This research is expected to help home industry food producers in considering packaging design to attract more attention and foster buyer interest by conducting eye tracking experiments. Keywords: Colour, eye-tracking, illustration, packaging, PDP, questionnaire

Abstract

Home industry food packaging displayed on shelves in stores will compete with products from other brands that are placed close together. In order to attract consumers’ attention and assist them in the purchasing decision-making process, packaging that has a competitive advantage is needed. This research is limited to the Primary Display Panel (PDP) packaging of home industry banana chips. In previous studies, the research used was quantitative, but this does not reveal the whole story. The data recording process can support “what” the participant looks at but does not reveal “why” they look at it. For this reason, this research is aimed to establish a broader understanding of what participants perceive of the packaging design seen using eye tracking methods and why it happened. This study uses qualitative approach. The study consists of three phases: literature study, eye tracking data recording, and data processing and interviews analyzed using content analysis. The result is colors and images are perceived to be the same by teenagers and young adults. There is no connection between likes and dislikes for colors/images with colors preference in choosing snack products. The results can be used by producers and packaging designers to create packages that generate consumer purchase interest.

Abstract

The wayang kulit (shadow puppet) theatre is a traditional art form that has thrived in Southeast Asia for a long time. In Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, apart from local stories, wayang kulit presents Indian epics, such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as a medium for Hindu-Buddhist teachings. When Islam spread in this region, the Javanese and Malay wayang kulit still kept developing, even when it was being repurposed for Islamic preaching. In its development in the Islamic era, the Javanese wayang kulit incorporated the role and influence of Sufi scholars and local rulers. The visual form, composition, and creation of the wayang kulit puppets along with the prose and musical arrangements were directly inspired by the Wali Sanga (Nine Apostles) and the following Javanese kings themselves. This paperng Kulit of Cirebonural Diplomacy of Nusantara ion in the pasteration, presents the historic wayang kulit of Cirebon and discusses its unique visual features, which reflect acculturation between ethnicities (Javanese, Chinese) as well as beliefs (local animism, Hindu-Buddhism, Islam). The historic wayang kulit of Cirebon proved that a peaceful, cross-cultural and religious diplomacy took place through the medium of art since the early stages of deployment of Islam in Java. This traditional art is a legacy for current and future younger generations, not only because of the aesthetical aspect, but also as a cross-cultural diplomacy strategy and philosophy that must be acknowledged, understood, and practiced. In accordance with the meaning of the word, 'wayang' (reflection) reflects a successful diplomacy of the past that can potentially be applied in the present, hoping harmonic relationships can emerge from cultural diversity in the midst of rapid globalization.

Abstract

Assubkiyah Islamic boarding school in Nagrak Village, Bandung Regency, is an Islamic educational institution that accepts many new students. As a traditional Islamic educational institution, this school has contributed a lot in creating a new generation with noble morality.  In accordance with the times and for information and promotion purposes, this school has had a website before, so its remote location is not a problem. However, due to lack of management skills, website knowledge and funding, the website is neglected and not updated. This can lead to misinformation for people who need information about the program and activities of school, it can also have an impact on decreasing the number of prospective students.  Based on that situation, a team from the Faculty of Creative Industries, Telkom University, took the initiative to design an information website regarding the Assubkiyah Islamic Boarding School, along with its management training for the staff and students. Hopefully, that after this program takes place, the website can be optimized into a medium that makes it easier for the public and prospective students to get information about education organized by the Assubkiyah Islamic Boarding School.

Abstract

Abstract This paper aims to see how the aesthetics in the video clip Dulang Kuring 2 which was popularized by Alm.Darso. We used qualitative method as a method in collecting related data and to analyze video clip DulangKuring 2, we use Homi K. Bhabha Post-Coloniam theory about mimicry, hybridity, and “the third space”. The analysis focuses on Darso, the location (landscape), and the setting-property in the video clip. From the analysis that has been done, the aesthetics in the music video clip DulangKuring 2 is paradoxical because it mixes the local and global aesthetic codes. While through the Bhabha postcolonial, we find that the place (landscape), and setting-property gradually mimicry then after that we’ll see another step which is a hybridity that produces “the third space”. From the analysis, the video clip DulangKuring 2 is aesthetically very paradoxical yet hybrid because it targets the contemporary Sundanese society. Keywords: Aesthetic, Communication, Darso, Post-colonialism
