Abstract

Coastal communities are known to prone to vulnerability arising from their nature of work. As they are mostly working as fishermen, natural hazards, isolation and climate variabilities are often constraining their ability to obtain sufficient income to support their livelihood. Hence, finding sustainable alternatives source of income is a sensible way to cope with such uncertainty and vulnerability. Achieving sustainable income, nevertheless, is challenging issue since it is affected by various factors from socio-economic as well as institutional perspectives. This paper is an attempt to assess the issue of alternative livelihood by identifying key variables affecting its sustainability. A MICMAC method was used and key variables from the analysis were then identified to support sustainable alternative livelihood in the communities. Lessons learned were also drawn from this study for policy makers and fisheries authorities in the regions.

Abstract – Mangrove Ecotourism is an environmentally sound tourist attraction where tourism prioritizes natural beauty without destroying the ecosystem. Mangrove forests are quite resistant to various disturbances and environmental pressures, but are very sensitive to settling or sedimentation, as well as various other activities such as waste and garbage disposal. Referring to several studies that have been conducted, the novelty of this research is that it was carried out at different locations and months in order to obtain data on the pattern of waste distribution at the same location, namely the mangrove ecotourism area in the west Oesapa urban village, Kupang City. The method used is literature study, observation consisting of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research phases covered the determination of transects and observation plots, sampling and analysis of the composition and density of marine debris species. The results showed that the type composition and total density of marine debris were dominated by plastic waste with a composition value of 45,455% and a density of 2,030 items/m2. Abstract

Decreasing water availability and increasing water demand have occurred in Soppeng regency, this is due to the potential of surface water as raw water for clean water is increasingly limited. In ensuring the sustainability of the clean water supply program in Soppeng regency, it is necessary to study the water supply using a system approach, so that the water supply in Soppeng regency can be sustainable. This research was conducted with the aim of analyzing the constraints faced, program needs, and institutions that play a role in the supply of clean water in Soppeng regency with the Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM) method. The results show that for the implementation of the clean water supply program, there are four key elements that need attention: the lack of institutional capacity, weak institutional governance, availability of raw water, and the role of Central Government (relevant ministries).
