Abstract

This research seeks to elaborate the question of hygiene in its relation with the Islamic doctrine in Netherlands-Indie. In the colonial world, hygiene is inevitably related to the colonial politic in order to assure the well-being of the population and the good health of the workers. A number of projects since the mid-19th century, such as the creation of Dokter Djawa School in 1851 and the programme of vaccination, were the indicator of the attempt to improve the health status of the population, along with the hygiene program in the plantation to assure the health status of the workers. Physicians who were dealing with this question frequently encountered difficulties in socializing the idea of hygiene. Since the majority of the population was moslem, they were trying to use the Islamic doctrine which is in line with the principle of hygiene in their propaganda. This article will try to analyze how the physicians used the Islamic doctrine in their works; how physicians treat the image of Islam as a religion from a medical point of view.

Abstract

This research seeks to elaborate the attempts to nationalize the knowledge of the past in Indonesia between 1945 to 1965. This period is also known as the time when the new perspective in national history writing called indonesiasentris appeared. At that time, writing national history was a necessary to justify the direction of this new-born state. Accordingly, the so-called indonesiasentris which was known as the identity of Indonesian historiography, in spite of its contribution to the history as a science, supposes a uniformity of paradigm in national history writing. Far from being true, the indonesiasentris reflects the heterogeneity of the attempts to interpret the Indonesia’s past. This article will try to analyze the genealogy of the indonesiasentris as a concept; how this concept became the main focus of the debate after the Independence; to which extent this debate was influenced by that in global scale; lastly, this article will try to put in perspective the agenda of writing history in contemporary Indonesian historiography.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the relationship between Sundanese women and prostitution practices in the colonial era. The emphasis on Sundanese women is derived from the abundance of news reporting that they resort to prostitution because of the inherent vice, such as laziness and fondness of luxury. This view, mostly through European eyes, puts women, especially Sundanese women, into such a predicament. Therefore, there are three main concerns to discuss in this article. First, it analyses European reports on Sundanese women and their relation with prostitution. Second, it shows the complexity of the practice of prostitution in a colonial country. Last, it discusses that prostitution is enabled by other material conditions such as urban development. It is important to note that the association with immorality on a certain ethnic group has always been rooted from the past. In addition, it reinforces that the assumption that prostitution is merely women’s issue can no longer be held onto.

Abstract

This article seeks to elaborate the question of sexuality in the Dutch Indies in the beginning of the twentieth century. The debate about sexuality, particularly in the common practice of the concubinage and the regulation of the prostitution is always linked to the issue of morality. The fact that the colonial government allowed the two activities in one period and prohibited these in other period, was an example to which extent the stance of the colonial authority toward this question changed. This inconsistency arose from the tension between the economic interest and the civilizing mission of the colonialism. Allowing the concubinage and prostitution will create the impression that the government allied to the immoral activity, while prohibiting it will endanger the economic interest of the colonialism. This article will try to analyze the dilemma of the colonial authority regarding this question; the reason why the government change their judgment; and lastly, to discuss this moral dilemma in a specific case.

Abstract

This article seeks to elaborate the research on natural history carried out by French naturalists in Indonesia during colonial period. The tropical nature attracted many European naturalists to conduct research in order to gain economic advantages from the natural richness. The curiosity toward the alien nature always came with the observation to the people living in that region. Nevertheless, not all the research was carried out by the plan. In the case of French naturalists, the research that they performed in this region was conducted coincidently while they were visiting this region. This article analyzes how the French naturalists made their research on natural history in the Archipelago. It examines as well the objects that interested them. Lastly, it shows to what extent the colonial knowledge was formed through the encounter between the Europeans and the local people.
