Abstract

The research focused on the representation of women in the news about the absence of women in Uber’s CEO candidates from the perspective of feminist stylistics by Sara Mills. Five news texts from five different websites published during August 2017 were analyzed; they were Washington Post, Daily Mail, Inverse, Gizmodo, and Fortune. The method used was a qualitative research method with the approach of critical discourse analysis of Sara Mills. By applying three levels of analysis which was analysis at the level of the word, phrase/sentence, and discourse, this research aimed to analyze how women were represented linguistically in the online news of Uber’s CEO candidates and to discover the reason why women were represented in the way they were. The findings reveal that women remain underrepresented in news media. It is proved by the dominance of women as the object in the stories. Moreover, women are represented as ‘glass cliff position’, minority, and a way to recreate the good image in the company. The gender stereotypes, the background story of Uber, the male-dominated industries, and the prevalent condition become the reasons why women represented that way.

Abstract

This article would like to present how women were defined in the movie, both by male and female characters. Mills (1998) provides a tool to help the readers understanding the style of a writer through her choices of words, sentences, and even in the discourse level. A novel based movie which won and was nominated in several awards, The Breadwinner, was full of portrayal of women in the setting of Afghanistan under the Taliban rule. The tragic story was beautifully wrapped under the animated movie produced to show the real picture towards the world. The data are in the form of words, sentences and discourse spoken by male and female characters that represent the depiction of women. The data obtained are examined with the view of Sara Mills theory. It is found that in the movie, the women are represented as two opposing aspects: women representation as an object of man domination, and women as the subject who is able to speak out her mind and to decide independently.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.020105

Abstract

This article explores how verbal violence on Facebook was performed by the users. It investigates the discursive strategy exploited by them. The data of verbal violence were taken from user comments to news update posted on Indonesian news portal fans pages under the topic of Paris tragedy. The comments were taken from four different Indonesian news fans pages, namely Detik.com, Kompas.com, Liputan6.com and Tribunnews.com. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively. Applying Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) proposed by Wodak, the result shows that the users exploits three strategies to perform verbal violence namely referential strategy, predicative strategy and argumentation strategy. Employing referential strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of noun and noun phrase, which functions as subject, object and modifier of noun phrase. Employing predicative strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of word, phrase and clause, which function as attribute or predicate. Employing argumentation strategy, verbal violence is realized in the form of sentence and discourse.

Abstract

This article studies the realisastion of politeness assertive speech act on the  scholarly dialogue called Religious Freedom Project (RFP) at the Georgetown University, US. The primary data in this article is in the form of written data (document), which is the transcription of the RFP dialogues conversation. In addition to the supplementary data is the video record of the dialogues retrieved from Youtube.  The assertive SA in this study refer to the utterances that bind S to the truth of something he/she expresses. The result shows that there were found the use of six types of assertive speech acts that go hand in hand to reflect the Leech's Politeness Principles, among others the acts of admitting, informing, assuring, arguing, affirming, and reporting. Based on the basis of finding data from 137 speech acts of assertive type, it is concluded that in RFP dialogue, the politeness markers were classified into eight types referring House & Kasper’s, i.e.; hedging, understaters, downtowners, committers (both enhancers and reducers of S’s self commitment), agent-avoiders, intensifiers, overstaters, and politeness markers. Politeness devices or markers reflect a great deal and effect on the production of utterances force in the RFP, all of which were directed toward criticism. Keywords: politeness markers; assertive speech act; politeness maxims; dialogueKESANTUNAN TINDAK TUTUR ASERTIF: MENSINERGIKAN PENANDA-PENANDA SANTUN LINGUISTIK DALAM KOMUNIKASI KONFLIK RESOLUSI AbstrakArtikel ini mengkaji realisasi kesantunan tindak tutur asertif pada dialog lintas agama dan cendikiawan Religious Freedom Project (RFP) di Universitas Georgetown, Amerika Serikat (A.S).Sumber data utama dalam penelitian ini berbentuk data tertulis (dokumen), yaitu teks transkripsi dari video percakapan dan sumber data pendukung yaitu yang berbentuk video rekaman tuturan dialog lintas agama, Religious Freedom Project (RFP) diakses melalui situs portal YouTube.
