Abstract

The improvement of patients’ food satisfaction and acceptance in the hospitals is primarily needed in the food service  system.  Room service is a new concept in the food service area. This study aims to compare the effects of two different types of food service systems; room service and conventional service system. The study with quasi-experimental design is conducted to the subject of 66 inpatients who were taken using a quota sampling method. Subjects were divided into different groups, the treatment groups (room service) and control groups (conventional). Leftover food between groups was compared for 9 large meals to determine acceptability. Food satisfaction is measured on the last day with using questionnaire. The study was conducted in April-June 2014. Chi-Square test and logistic regression were used for analysis of research data. There were significant differences food satisfaction (RR=4.6; p=0.0001) and food acceptance (RR=1.94; p=0.0488) between control and treatment group. The logistic regression test showed that room service group had higher food satisfaction and food acceptance level than control group after controlling confounding factors, which were 12,11 times (95% CI 3,593 – 37,219) and 2,38 times (95% CI 0,68-8,31), respectively. The room service increases food satisfaction and food acceptance of patients compared with conventional systems.

Abstract

Background: Recently, obesity has become health problem which was frequently associated with an increased occurrence of non-communicable diseases. The prevalence of obesity has been increasing in both developed and developing countries. The increasing prevalence of obesity was marked by a shift in eating pattern composition containing high fat, cholesterol, but low in fiber such as consumption of fast food and soft drinks. The imbalance of nutrient intake was one of the risk factors for the emergence of obesity in adolescents. Obesity in adolescents at risk of becoming obese in adulthood and potentially can lead to cardiovascular and metabolic diseasesObjective: This study aimed to find out the prevalence of obesity and to investigate risk factors for energy intake and frequency of consumption of fast food and soft drinks on the incidence of obesity in high school students in Pontianak.Method: This research was an observational study which involves case-control design. The samples in this study are 160 students consisting of 80 obese high school teenagers and 80 non-obese high school teenagers. The choice for a subject of research used proportional stratified random sampling. Measurement of obesity status subject was taken by the measurement of weight and height based on the reference standard WHO / NCHS. It also involves data intake of fast food and soft drinks based on interviews with SQFFQ. Data were analyzed by chi-square test, t-test, and logistic regression.Results: The prevalence of obesity in high school teenagers in Pontianak was 9.29%. The bivariate test result showed no association  between total  energy intake of fast food and obesity (p<0.05; OR=2.27; 95% CI: 1.12-4.64). The relationship between the consumption of modern energy intake of fast food, fast food and soft drink with the local obesity was not statistically significant (p>0.05). There was a relationship between the frequency of total  fast food and of the local fast food consumption with obesity (p<0.05; OR=2.03; 95% CI: 1.03-4.00), (p<0.05; OR=2.63; 95% CI: 1.33-5.25). The relationship between the frequency of fast food consumption in total modern fast food and soft drinks and obesity was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Multivariable analysis showed that the total energy intake was the most dominant factor to the onset of obesity (p<0.05; OR=5.27; 95% CI: 1.64-16.97).Conclusion: Consumption of fast food was a risk factor for obesity in high school teenagers in Pontianak. On the other hand,  soft drink consumption did not become the risk factor for obesity in teens high school in Pontianak.

Abstract

Background: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a syndrome of opportunistic disease due to decreased immunity in patient HIV/AIDS with the symptom of losing weight progressively and low nutrition status. To cover the condition, it is necessary to give nutrition support. Objective: To compare the effect of nutrition counseling and nutrition supplementation with nutrition counseling only towards the nutrition status and nutrition intake of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).Method: The study was experimental non randomized control group pre-post test design. Subject consisted of two groups  i.e. nutrition counseling plus (with nutrition supplementation) and nutrition counseling only. The study was carried out at Dr. Sardjito Hospital from January to March 2012. The sample were taken purposively with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed by using paired t-test and linear regression to calculate nutrient intake and nutrition status.Results: The energy intake of nutrition counseling plus group showed significantly higher amount than the group with nutrition counseling only (change of 141.40 kcal vs 15.99 kcal; OR=4.96). Protein intake was insignificantly higher than nutrition counseling (change of 6.28 g vs 5.11 g; OR=1.94), weight were insignificantly lower than nutrition counseling (change of 0.46 kg vs 0.75 kg; OR=1.21), and nutrition status were insignificantly lower than nutrition counseling (changes in body mass index 0.18 kg/m2 vs 0.32 kg/m2; OR=1.25).Conclusion: Nutrition counseling plus could increase energy intake but could not increase protein intake, weight, and body mass index.

Abstract

Background: Some studies state that fish consumption of at least 200-400 g/week can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish have cardioprotective effects. However, the cardiac effect of fish consumption are not primarily related to the amount of fish consumed but also its cooking method. The cooking method (eg, frying) may alter the fatty acid content of a fish meal by absorbing fatty acids from cooking oils and adding trans fatty acids. Non-fried fish consumption (eg, boiled/steamed) was associated with lower risk of coronary heart disease but fried fish was not.Objective: To identify the quantity of fish consumed and the cooking method with the incidence of dyslipidemia.Method: The study was observational with case control design in patients that checked themselves at Prodia laboratory of Samarinda. Respondents consisted of 152 patients, comprising 76 cases and 76 control. Cases were patients with dyslipidemia and control were those without dyslipidemia matched according to gender and age. Analysis used Chi-Square statistical test at confidence interval 95%.Results: There was significant difference in average of fish consumed between case and control group (164.86±63.61 g vs 218.55±62.21 g; p<0.05). There was also significant difference (p<0.05) between case and control group in variables of body mass index (24.53±2.4 kg/m2 vs 23.26±1.6 kg/m2); intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA) (34.58±5.82 g vs 28.27±5.4 g); simple carbohydrate (63.86±13.67 g vs 49.35±11.81 g); fruit and vegetable (42.61±20.17 g vs 53.48±23.47 g); and waist circumference (88.88±9.08 cm vs 86.21±7.8 cm). In the final multivariate analysis, quantity of fish consumed has no influences with dyslipidemia (p>0,05), but the influence is in the cooking method process (OR=10,84; p<0,05).Conclusion: There was no influence between quantity of fish consumption. Risk for the prevalence of dyslipidemia was 10,84 times greater in the subject who the cooking method does not suitable the recommendation.

Abstract

Background: Prediabetics have cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Unhealthy food intake can increase the risk of hypertension in prediabetes. Prediabetes hypertension has the impact on increasing prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A cohort study has shown that DASH diet is related to the lower incidence of hypertension in women (1).Objective: Of this study had the purpose to know that inappropriate DASH-like diet intake is associated with hypertension risk at prediabetes women in Puskesmas Tlogosari Kulon Semarang.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Puskesmas Tlogosari Kulon area on January – March 2014 among 117 prediabetes women. The subjects were selected using consecutive sampling. Independent variable in this study was DASH-like diet intake which assessed from FFQ and the dependent variable was hypertension risk. The subject was classified as at risk for hypertension if, in seated position, the mean of the two measurements was ≥120/80 mmHg. Chi-Square test and logistic regression were used to analyze the data.Results: The mean of DASH-like diet score in subjects who were not at hypertension risk (3.31) was higher than subjects who were at hypertension risk (3.23). There was 90,77% person with hypertension risk who did not consume DASH-like diet properly. But the association of DASH-like diet intake with hypertension risk was not significant (p=0.194). The multivariate result showed that there was association between family history (p=0.047), obesity (p=0.016), and fat intake (p=0.015) with hypertension risk.Conclusion: Inappropriate DASH-like diet intake may increase the risk of hypertension, but it is not statistically significant.

Abstract

Backgound: Juvenile obesity is becoming a global problem. The high prevalence of juvenile obesity is due to an inadequate physical activity and an imbalance of nutritional intake. The roles of parent are significant in the incidence of obesity; therefore their understanding on the prevention of obesity is necessary. Findings of some studies in Yogyakarta show that 7.9 % of adolescents are approaching obesity.Objective: To assess the relationship between energy intake, physical activities, parental perception, and the status of obesity among students grade 7 to 9.Method: This study used cross sectional design. The samples were students grade 7 to 9 of Yogyakarta Municipal City including those who were obese and non-obese. The respondents were recruited as many as 230 students; chi square (χ²) test and significant level of 95%, were used to analyze the difference between obese and non-obese group.Results: This study found that energy intake correlated with obesity (p < 0.05). Moreover, physical activity significantly correlated with obesity (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, parental perception did not significantly correlate with obesity (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Physical activity and energy intake had an association with obesity status among students grade 7 to 9 in Yogyakarta Municipal City. But parental perception had no association with obesity among the respondence.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a clinical syndrome with symptoms of hyperglycemia, urinary glucose excretion and disorder of insulin mechanism. Approximately 90-95% of diabetic patients suffer from type 2 DM. Various studies show that compliance to treatment of chronic disease in general is low. Compliance to eating or food frequency amongst DM patients in hospital in particular is very low. The success of self management of blood glucose (SMBG) needs participation of the patient, families, and educator team.Objective: To study the factors affecting eating compliance particularly eating schedule among type 2 diabetic out-patient who had nutrition counseling in RSUD Kota Yogyakarta.Method: It was an observasional study with cross sectional design and purposive sampling. Data collection was done in October 2008 with 98 subjects. The sampel were type 2 diabetic out-patients according to inclusion criteria at out- patient clinic in RSUD Kota Yogyakarta. Statistical test with 95% confidence interval was applied to investigate factors infuenced eating compliance.Results: There were no correlations between eating compliance and disease duration (RP=  1,253 and p =0,403), and also with type of occupation (RP= 1,047 dan p= 1,000). However, it was found that family support affected eating compliance (RP= 1,723 dan p= 0,025) as well as eating schedule before nutrition counseling (RP = 2,151 and p= 0,02).Conclusion: Duration of disease and type of occupation did not affect eating compliance. Nevertheless, family support and eating schedule before nutrition education affected eating compliance among type 2 DM out-patients in RSUD Kota Yogyakarta.

Abstract

HbA1c is a parameter that may be used in predicting and diagnosing diabetes. Since diabetes is predicted to increase in Indonesia, it is necessary to understand the distribution and associated factors of HbA1c in the general Indonesian population. However, those data are still limited. This study aims to determine the distribution of HbA1c and its associated factors in Indonesian adults. We conducted a cross-sectional study analyzing data from Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2014-2015. HbA1c was analyzed using dried blood spot (DBS) specimen with Bio-Rad D10 HPLC. We performed Student?s t test and ANOVA to show the results of the bivariate analyses and multiple linear regression to determine the association between variables. The study included 4.101 subjects (20-59 years) without diabetes and provided an overview of the distribution of HbA1c levels based on socio-demographic factors and smoking behavior described in percentiles. The mean of HbA1c was 5.35% with a standard error of 0.01. The threshold value of HbA1c for prediabetes (5.7%) corresponded approximately to the 75th percentile. Although there were differences in HbA1c distribution, socio-demographic factors such as education levels, employment, and settlement region as well as smoking were not independently associated with HbA1c levels in Indonesian adults. Furthermore, age and sex were associated with HbA1c.

Abstract

Background: Associations of dietary diversity score (DDS), obesity and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) with glucose metabolism have been reported. Furthermore, DDS may not be associated with healthy weight. However, studies on these topics are limited in general Indonesia population. Methods: A total of 3,825 Indonesia Family Life Survey 2014/2015 participants aged 20-59 years old were included in this study. DDS was measured qualitatively in five food groups: carbohydrates, proteins, dairy products, vegetables, and fruits. Obesity was defined by Body Mass Index (BMI) classification for Indonesians. Blood analyses were performed in dried blood spot specimens. hs-CRP were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and HbA1c was analyzed using Bio-Rad D10. Results: High DDS group had higher HbA1c than low DDS group (p = 0.030). Furthermore, medium and high DDS group had higher BMI than low DDS group (p = 0.003 and < 0.001). Obese group had higher HbA1c than nonobese group (p < 0.001). hs-CRP was correlated with HbA1c (r = 0.1194; p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that DDS, obesity and hs-CRP were associated with HbA1c (p = 0.030, p < 0.001 and < 0.001). Conclusions: Present study confirmed that obesity and hs-CRP are associated with HbA1c. DDS is positively associated with HbA1c and BMI. Promoting dietary diversity requires careful consideration. Moreover, further studies are warranted.
