Abstract

The birth and existence of Indonesian Massive Open Online Course (IMOOC) facilitate English teachers in Indonesia to improve their English teaching skills and explore various potential digital tools to help promote autonomous learning in their language classrooms. To prove this fact I did a qualitative survey on 17 English teachers as the IMOOC participants from Central Java. I gave them questionnaires through a Google Form. By using this data collection technique I got their responses on the importance and advantage of the Indonesian MOOC as Technology for Autonomous Learning in their English classroom context and situation. Based on the survey data, it was known that the participants: 1) had not followed MOOCs (60%), 2) did not know the advantages of MOOC (70%), 3) knew IMOOC (86%), 4) were interested in following IMOOC (100%), 5) became autonomous learners (90%), 6) were upgrading their ICT competence for English teaching (100%), 7) were improving their career as English teachers (100%). From this survey, I have much invaluable information to map the role and function of the Indonesian MOOC for English teaching and learning autonomously. The Indonesian MOOC is really significant for English teachers to face a global era, especially for their digital literacy competence.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the implementation of mind mapping strategy to teach writing in IELTS preparation class. It was a descriptive qualitative study on 20 students of IELTS preparation classes. Those students were divided into 6 classes based on their level after taking IELTS placement test. There were 3 teachers who taught 2 classes each. The data were collected by using classroom observations, students’ questionnaire, teachers’ interview, and document analysis. The present study revealed four results. First, mind mapping strategy was implemented by grouping the visual data to find out main trends, large increase or decrease, consistent direction and the relationship between modes and percentages in task 1; whereas in task 2, it was implemented by building students’ critical thinking to list main ideas which later on give supporting details for each main idea. Second, the students enjoyed teaching learning process through mind mapping strategy which resulted in passing guarantee program of having score improvement minimum 1 point, improved their analysis of data, enlarged their knowledge in academic writing topic, built their critical thinking and managed time well. Third, the problems during the implementation of those two strategies were teachers’ schedule, students’ activities at school before joining IELTS preparation class, time management, repetition ideas and phrases, laziness and boredom, and also illegible hand writing. Fourth, the solutions were: managing teachers’ and students’ schedule well, doing the test in time as instructions, reading many articles related with IELTS writing to broaden students’ knowledge, giving free writing, and practicing more.

Abstract

The success of lesson study as an approach for teacher professional development in improving students’ learning has inspired the works on microteaching lesson study which is designed for student teachers in microteaching course. Some studies show that microteaching lesson study brought about positive result to student teachers’ pedagogical ability and content knowledge. However, that microteaching lesson study influences student teachers in their teaching internship, that is the course taken after microteaching where student teachers teach real students in real schools, has not been revealed yet. This study aims at exploring the influence of microteaching lesson study on the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student teachers in teaching internship and to what extent the influence was to promote the EFL student teachers’ life-long learning to teach. It is a qualitative study with semi-structured group interview as the instrument of the research. The subject of the study was ten EFL student teachers who voluntarily participated in the study from twenty two student teachers. They had enrolled in a microteaching class that applied microteaching lesson study in the sixth semester and then took the teaching internship in the seventh semester. The finding of the study indicates that microteaching lesson study has considerably influences most of the EFL student teachers in gaining life-long learning to teach as they already implemented the steps of microteaching lesson study in their teaching internship initiatively. Finally, this study recommends teacher educators to adapt lesson study in microteaching course that can make the EFL student teachers to keep learning to teach.

Abstract

Translating literary works is different from translating non-literary works. One of the literary texts meant in this study is novel. In the process of translating a novel, translators sometimes have problems to determine appropriate equivalent words. The equivalent words themselves must be literary words that are difficult to search. There are many factors that cause translators difficult to translate a novel. Some of them are lack of basic knowledge of English language and literature, misinterpretation and being careless in translation process. Consequently they have difficulties in linguistics, analysis, culture, and appreciation. So the way to overcome the problems is increasing the knowledge of both languages and cultures, having literary studies background, referring to guidance and rules of translating a novel or other literary works.

Abstract

Translating idioms and figurative languages is more difficult than translating ordinary expressions. Novel translators usually have problems in translating those aspects because they should reproduce in the target language (TL) the closest natural equivalence of the source language (ST) message, firstly in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style accepted socio-culturally. Idioms and figurative languages are sometimes not translated into the acceptable ones in the target language. The readers are often confused on what they are reading because expressions are not understandable. The solution of those problems is to provide a model of translating idioms and figurative languages. The model that is designed here to produce high quality of translation product is Tripartite Cycle Model.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the graduates’ perspectives on the usage of English as communication on board vessels, between ship to ship or ship to shore. The identification was made by investigating the maritime institution graduates or maritime alumni perspectives which focused on the language terms of using the English language through radio communication. This research adopted a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis to investigate the language elements. The study sample consisted of 8 Nautical Graduate Students from three Maritime Institutions in Indonesia who had been working at an ocean-going vessel for 2 years or more. The data were collected and generated from their perspective answers on the questionnaires and also from radio communication transcripts. The results showed that the communication that happened on board vessels which were done by the deck department was successful enough but still less in using language components such as good grammar and correct pronunciation. Then, the English language user or skillful communicator must know how to send the message well in order to avoid miscommunication and should consider the English competence in order to avoid accidents and incidents at sea.

Abstract

Research has thus far shown that students' interest and active involvement are pivotal in the language learning process. However, there is a paucity of research examining how an English literary text can be exploited to bolster student engagement in an Indonesian EFL setting. Occupying this niche, this article focuses on the student's responses and the application of imaginative re-creation to the short story ("The Gift of the Magi"). Twenty-eight 3rd-semester English students taking the "Basic Reading Comprehension" course at a private university in Semarang (Indonesia) participated in this study. Couched under the reader-response theory, the students were asked to imaginatively recreate meanings after they read the text. The results showed that the students were actively involved and responded to the text during the learning process in various ways. Several students' responses were still very close to the original text, while the others were fairly different from the original. Throughout the learning process, the students actively interacted with texts and engaged with other learners. These interactions help to create a relaxing environment for the learners, which aids comprehension and encourages creativity in the creation of a new text. These findings shed light on the further development of students' creative writing in EFL teaching.
