Abstract

This research is done due to students’ low activities in learning natural science. The teacher focused on the concepts found in the text book which have to be memorized by the students. As a result, the students’ learning outcomes were low. This research aims to describe the improvement of students’ natural science activities and learning outcomes by using the discovery learning model. The design of the research was class action research using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research was done at SDN 149/VIII Muara Tebo. The subjects were twenty four fifth grade students of the school. It is found that the discovery learning model improves students’ activities and learning outcomes. The activities that were observered in this research involved listening, oral, mental, and emotional.the score of the students’ activities increased from 67,12 in cycle I to 81,76 in cycle II. Meanwhile, the improvement of students’ learning outcomes was found from their cognitive score of 60 in cycle I to 71 in cycle II. Their affective score enhanced from 67,90 in cycle I to 75,88 in cycle II. Finally, their psychomotor score increased from 67,72 in cycle I to 75,88 in cycle II. It is concluded that the discovery learning model can be used as one alternative to improve students’ activities and learning outcomes in learning natural science.
