Abstract

Research on positive psychology has widely grown since its emergence.  The strength of the human becomes a key point of positive psychology to explore, such as self-efficacy, optimism, self-control, etc.  This research applied positive psychology to evaluate the role of social-emotional health on the academic achievement of college students. There were 107 first year psychology students of the Islamic University of Indonesia participating this study.  Data were collected using the Social Emotional Health Survey System (SEHS-S) developed by Jones, You, and Furlong (2012) and Grade Point Average (GPA) of students. Data analysis showed that Social Emotional Health was correlated with GPA. Three domains within Social Emotional Health Survey System such as belief in self, emotional competence, and engaged living were positively correlated with GPA. However, belief in others does not correlate with GPA.

Abstract

This study focus on how contextual teaching-learning (CTL), as one of learning method, can improve student engagement. Participants of this study were 156 college students in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The study was conducted with an experimental approach. Measurement of student engagement was done by using School Engagement Scale. This scale was adapted into Indonesia version, and it has Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient 0.859 with 15 items. Result of data analysis showed that there was a significant difference on student engagement among college students (p=0.042), but student engagement scores in posttest was smaller than scores in pretest (N Negative Ranks = 83, Mean rank = 78.20; N Positive Rank = 64, Mean rank = 68.55; Ties = 9). Additional analysis was also discussed in this study.From this result, we can conclude that CTL not effective to improve student engagement among college students. Results and limitations of this study are discussed further in this paper.

Abstract

Research on procrastination has been widely done, however, there was limited research using interventions. Based on the concept of self-regulated learning, the effectiveness of self-regulation training was examined to reduce student procrastination on thesis writing. The hypothesis was the self-regulation training will reduce the procrastination level of undergraduate thesis writing. Ten psychology students participated in this training and measured by TKSS of Djing (2010). This study used a quasi-experimental with one-group pretest-posttest design. Result showed that self-regulation training effectively reduce student procrastination on thesis writing, t (5) = 2,132, p = 0, 04 (one-tailed), (p < 0.05) and D = 0, 69. Therefore, self-regulation training could be taken to overcome student procrastination on thesis writing. It can be done as a preventive or curative tool.Keywords: self-regulation training, procrastination, students

Abstract

Smartphone use is increasing worldwide. Despite the benefit of using a smartphone, a growing body of research has reported smartphone use's negative effect. Lack of self-control has been associated with problematic use of smartphones as well as stress. However, there is still little evidence of how religiosity could have an impact on problematic smartphone use. This study aimed to examine the indirect effect of religiosity on problematic smartphone use via self-control and stress. A few 146 undergraduate students enrolled in this study. They completed an online survey comprising problematic smartphone use, religiosity, self-control, and stress. Our findings showed a negative association between religiosity or self-control with problematic smartphone use. Stress also correlated positively with problematic smartphone use. Path analysis demonstrated the mediation effect of self-control on religiosity and problematic smartphone use, but not the stress. These results underlined the psychological mechanism underlying smartphone use of students. Moreover, religiosity could be considered to prevent the detrimental effect of problematic smartphone use.

Abstract

Procrastination is widespread across the nation and setting.  Its occur commonly in an academic setting which has many demands and deadline.  One of the variable construct which reported has a high association with procrastination is self-control.  It is why we would like to find out the role of self-control on student procrastination.  There were 100 undergraduate students enrolled this study, from religious education faculty of a private university in Yogyakarta.  Pure Procrastination Scale, Procrastination Academic Scale for Student, and Brief Self-Control Scale were administered to obtain student procrastination and self-control. Results showed that self-control correlates moderately negative with both of general and academic procrastination. Also, self-control could predict procrastination both in an academic and general setting. As an additional, there were significantly different between the lowest and highest procrastination group based on student self-control, with big size-effect reported.  For further analysis, the prevalence of six areas of academic procrastination also discuss.

Abstract

Manusia terdiri atas intelek, nafsu dan marah. Untuk meredam emosi marah salah satu caranya adalah berwudhu. Wudhu adalah ritual mensucikan badan yang dilakukan Muslim dan merupakan bagian yang wajib dilakukan untuk memastikan kebersihan sebelum melakukan ibadah solat. Selain mensucikan badan, menurut hadits Nabi Muhammad, wudhu memiliki keutamaan untuk meredakan marah. Emosi marah sendiri merupakan salah satu bentuk dari agresivitas. Peneliti ingin mengetahui apakah wudhu dapat mempengaruhi perilaku agresivitas pada mahasiswi Program Studi Psikologi Universitas Islam Indonesia. Subjek penelitian terdiri atas 12 mahasiswi yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol, masing-masing kelompok berisikan 6 mahasiswi. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengambil data adalah field experiment-posttest only control group design. Hasil data yang didapat, diuji secara statistik menggunakan SPSS 22 for windows dan diperoleh data uji normalitas Kolmogorov-Smirnov (p=0.066), uji homogenitas Levene's Test for Equality of Variances (p=0.135 dan p=0.279), uji hipotesis mayor Independent Samples Test t-test for Equality of Means (Sig-1 tailed) (p=0.026), uji hipotesis minor Independent Samples Test t-test for Equality of Means (Sig-1 tailed) (p=0.247), selisih nilai Mean agresivitas antara kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol adalah 1.8333, sedangkan selisih Mean suku Jawa dan suku luar Jawa adalah 0.7143. Berdasarkan analisis tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa wudhu berpengaruh terhadap agresivitas mahasiswi Program Studi Psikologi Universitas Islam Indonesia, dan wudhu tidak berpengaruh pada agresivitas mahasiswi Program Studi Psikologi Universitas Islam Indonesia ditinjau dari suku, sehingga hipotesis mayor diterima sedangkan hipotesis minor ditolak. Kata kunci : Wudhu, agresivitas ABSTRACT Human has intellectual, lust, and anger. When people feel any anger emotion, one thing they can do is doing ablution. Ablution is a ritual washing performed by Muslim and it is part of compulsory activities to ensure cleanliness before doing prayer. The anger emotion itself is one of many kinds of aggressiveness. The purpose of this study is examine the effect of ablution in aggressiveness on students of Department of Psychology at Islamic University of Indonesia. The subjects of this study consist of 12 college student, they were divided into experiment group and control group with 6 subject in each group. The research method used is field experiment with posttest only control group design. The result of this study has been examined using SPSS 22 for windows and resulting test of normality Kolmogorov-Smirnov (p=0.066), test of homogeneity Levene's Test for Equality of Variances (p=0.135 and p=0.279), test of major hypothesis Independent Samples Test t-test for Equality of Means (Sig-1 tailed) (p=0.026), meanwhile test of minor hypothesis Independent Samples Test t-test for Equality of Means (Sig-1 tailed) (p=0.247), the difference between Mean of aggressiveness of experiment group and control group is 1.8333, meanwhile between javanese ethnic and other ethnics is 0.7143. The results indicate that ablution has effect in aggressiveness on students of Department of Psychology at Islamic University of Indonesia and ablution has no effect in aggressiveness on students of Department of Psychology at Islamic University of Indonesia considering ethnics of the subjects. Abstract

Menyusun skripsi hingga tuntas seringkali menjadi persoalan bagi mahasiswa, terlebih dalam situasi pandemi Covid-19 saat ini yang mengubah sistem pembelajaran dilakukan jarak jauh (daring). Mahasiswa dituntut memiliki kemampuan resilensi yang baik menghadapi hal tersebut.  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan prediksi regulasi diri dalam belajar terhadap resiliensi akademik pada mahasiswa yang sedang menyusun skripsi.  Total partisipan yang mengikuti penelitian adalah 100 mahasiswa aktif yang terdiri atas 78 perempuan dan 22 laki-laki.  Partisipan berusia 19 – 24 tahun dan sedang mengerjakan skripsi.  Seluruh partisipan mengisi skala regulasi diri dalam belajar dan resiliensi akademik secara daring.  Hasil analisis korelasi menunjukkan bahwa semua subskala regulasi diri dalam belajar berhubungan positif dengan resiliensi akademik.  Subskala tersebut yaitu self-efficacy for learning and performance, control of learning beliefs, metacognitive self-regulation, time and study environment, serta effort regulation.  Hasil analisis regresi berganda menunjukkan bahwa semua subskala regulasi diri dalam belajar tersebut dapat memprediksi resiliensi akademik mahasiswa, kecuali pada subskala effort regulation.  Kemampuan manajemen waktu dan lingkungan menjadi prediktor yang paling kuat terhadap resiliensi akademik mahasiwa.  Berdasarkan hal tersebut, regulasi diri dalam belajar dapat berperan sebagai faktor promotif terhadap resiliensi akademik mahasiswa.

Abstract

This literature review aims to find out how much influence Qur’an has to reduce the anxiety experienced by students facing the National Examination. The national examination is a routine agenda carried out to assess and see students’ abilities in mastering learning material during their education process. Towards the national examination, many students who feel anxious and worried about their ability to do the national examination, this situation is anxious. Some researchers applied the method with tadabbur Qur’an, the results obtained indicate this method was effective in reducing student anxiety facing the national examination. Students can control anxiety, bring a calm heart, and this condition will increase the concentration of students while dealing with a problem. Become more positive, healthier physically and psychologically, feel confident, and reduce unnecessary worries or fears about national examinations.

Abstract

The Minangnese are an ethnic group in Indonesia that reside in West Sumatra. It has characterized by an emphasis on harmony in all aspects of life. Despite this emphasis, the Minangnese recognize that conflict is a natural occurrence. The study aimed to investigate the effect of religiosity and interpersonal attachment on forgiveness through agreeableness and neuroticism in the Minangnese ethnicity.  Minangnese ethnic participants were selected by considering the following criteria, namely citizens of and living in West Sumatra Province, claimed to be Minangnese people, Muslim, and living in West Sumatra Province for the last 10 years. Using a stratified cluster random sampling method, 205 Minangnese individuals were recruited and administered five questionnaires to assess forgiveness, agreeableness, neuroticism, religiosity, and interpersonal attachment. The results indicated that religiosity had a significant influence on forgiveness in the Minangnese ethnicity, with this influence being mediated by agreeableness and neuroticism. Specifically, religiosity was found to have a positive effect on emotional stability and a negative effect on neuroticism, as well as reducing hostility and anger and decreasing anxiety. These findings suggest that religiosity and agreeableness may be important factors to consider when seeking to understand and promote forgiveness in the Minangnese ethnicity
