Abstract

ABSTRACTSpatial and Temporal Distribution of Bonti-bonti (Paratherina striata) an EndemicFish in Towuti Lake, South Sulawesi. Bonti-bonti (Paratherina striata) is an endemicfish species in Towuti and Mahalona Lake. This fish included into vulnerable species. Itshould be protected from decreasing of fish population due to increasing exploitationand habitat quality changes. The objective of this research to study on spatial and temporaldistribution of the fish, as a basic information for its conservation. Samples were collectedfrom May 2006 to April 2007 using experimental gillnet mesh size 0.625, 0.75, 1.0, and1.25 inches at five stations. Fish number and size captured during 15 hours. Waterquality parameters that analyzed were temperature, conductivity, pH, and dissolvedoxygen using water quality checker-Horiba, alkalinity used titration methode, whilewater level and rain fall obtained from PT. Inco. Distribution of fish abundance wasanalyzed with Mann-Whitney non-parametric test. Water quality parameters thatinfluencing fish abundance were analyzed by multivariate analysis. The results show thatthe distribution of bonti-bonti spreading widely starting from lakeside to middle of thelake. The highest abundance of the fish are in inlet with sand, gravel, and stone substrat.Fish size was obtained more various at the inlet station than other stasions and it predictedas main habitat. Water qualitiy parameters of were not factors influencing difference ofspatial distribution but it was influenced by behavior of habitat selection. The highesttemporal distribution of the fish abundance in November and December influenced bydissolved oxygen and high water level.Key words : Spatial and temporal distribution, Paratherina striata, endemic fish, abundance,Towuti Lake

Abstract

Reproduction of Endemic Fish Butini (Glossogobius matanensis) Based on Depth and Time in Towuti Lake. Butini fish (Glossogobius matanensis) belonging to the Gobiidae family and is one ofendemic fish in Towuti Lake and classified as demersal fish. Fishing activities and habitat quality changes tend to reduce butini stocks in Towuti Lake. Therefore, it needs to be protected of stocksfor sustainability. This research is to determine reproduction of endemic fish based on depth and time as basic data for the effort of conservation and domestication. Gonad maturity that was analyzed histologically obtained five maturity stages. Based on the diversity of egg size, especially in the gonad maturity stage (IV), it is indicated that butini fish are classified as partial spawner. Male and female fish gonad mature (50%) at 36.22 and 31.43 cm total length, respectively. October and March, an estimated spawning peak of butini fish in Towuti Lake held this month at a depth of 150m and 200 m. Fecundity of butini fish in gonad maturity stage (III and IV) between 11184-66305 eggs and 14922-81522 eggs, respectively. The highest mean of fecundity there in October (56,907 eggs) and the lowest was found in July (25,447 eggs). Fecundity of fish at 25 m-200 m depths ranging from 30.778-35.329 eggs. Keywords: Reproduction, endemic fish, Glossogobius matanensis, depth and time, Towuti Lake

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe Exploitation Rate of Endemic Bonti-bonti (Paratherina striata) in Towuti Lake. Bonti-bonti(Paratherina striata) is an endemic fish species as vulnerable species to extinction. This fish livein Towuti and Mahalona Lake the tectonic-oligotrophic lakes that are located in Malili Complex,South Sulawesi. This lake is used for various purposes i.e. hydroelectric power plant, capturefishery, navigation, ecotourism and source of water for domestic uses. This lake also supports lifeof endemic fish species that should be protected from decreasing population due to intensiveexploitation. The objective of this research was to study the exploitation rate of Bonti-bonti asconservation efforts. The study was done in Towuti Lake from May 2006 to April 2007 usingdescriptive method. Utilization rate of Bonti-bonti stocks in Towuti Lake indicated an overfishingcondition of male and female population. Increasing effort (units/month) of dipnet tends to reducefishing gear productivity.Key words: exploitation rate, Bonti-bonti, endemic fish and Towuti Lake

Abstract

ABSTRACTStudy of Reproduction Aspects of Endemic Fish Bonti-bonti (Paratherina striata)in Lake Towuti, South Sulawesi. Bonti-bonti, is one of endemic fishes in Lake Towuti andLake Mahalona. Bonti-bonti has been utilized by people around the lake for consumption inthe form of 6esh fish, dry fish, and salty fish; as ornamental fish; and as raw material foranimal feed. It should be protected from decreasing of fish population due to increasingexploitation and habitat quality changes. The objective of this research is to know thereproduction aspects of this endemic fish, as basic data for conservation. This research wasconducted in Lake Towuti, South Sulawesi from May 2006 to April 2007 at five stations.Samples were collected using experimental gillnet sized 0.625, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 inches. The result shows that testis and ovary was found each in one organ during a period of gonadadevelopment. Gonada maturity, was observed histologically oscured at five maturity stages. The range of egg diameters were from 0.01 to 1.50 mm. The fust gonada maturity period ofmale and female fish were reached at 5.53 and 6.26 cm of total length, respectively. Male andfemale fish gonada maturity (50%) were at 16.78 and 14.61 cm total length, respectively.Gonada maturity index value of male and female were 0.01-3.96% and 0.02-6.77%. Thereproduction ability is related to fecundity which have an effect on number ofjuveniles. Therange of fish fecundity were 818-6,051, which were devided kom female with 11.30-18.33cm total length. Bonti-bonti fish is partial spawner type.Key words : Reproduction aspects, endemic fish, Paratherina striata, and Lake Towuti
