Abstract

Team-Based Learning (TBL) is one of active learning strategies that build on individuals’ strengths by allowing them to collaborate and work as a team to achieve common learning objectives. TBL is a cooperative learning strategy was introduced to encourage students become active learners rather than be passive recipients of information. It is generally based on the principle that students working together as a cohesive team are able to achieve higher levels of learning. The lecturer’s role essentially is as facilitator. In order to activate the participation of EFL learners in classroom and improve their reading comprehension ability, the researcher conducted a research to find out good impacts of TBL integrated with Collaborative strategic reading toward the English Education Department students in Indonesia as EFL learners. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method. The students started reading activity by previewing the text, click (what vocabulary the students understand), clunk (what vocabulary the students don’t understand), getting the gist, wrapping up and done cooperatively. The conclusion of this research showed that TBL integrated with Collaborative strategic reading can activate the participation of EFL learners in classroom and improve their reading comprehension ability. Abstract

The objective of this study focused on the effect of paired conversation activity by utilizing news-based materials in improving the students’ speaking skill. The students were supposed to comprehend the content of news-based materials and then explain and conclude the essential things from the news orally. It was focused on improving the students’ productive skill that is speaking skill. This research covered different topics of news taken from some resources such as; international yahoo news, BBC news, YouTube, magazine, and other mass media. In this research, the students also be expected to search and discover the course materials by themselves from internet, television etc. They discussed the topics of news-based materials with his/her pair. They started to discuss the news by using W-H questions, namely; who, what, where, why, when, and how. The lecturer has role as facilitator and consultant of the students in learning. It involved several learning activities, such as; preparing the news-based materials taken from BBC news, international yahoo news, magazine, etc, making group in pair, reading carefully the news-based materials, discussing the essential things from the news, conclude the news orally, and presenting in front of the class. This study was experimental research design and applied quantitative method. The students of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Parepare taken as the subject of this research. They were taught speaking course through the implementation of paired conversation activity by utilizing news-based materials. Through this treatment, it was found out that paired conversation activity by utilizing news-based materials has good effects in improving the students’ speaking skill. Besides, the students also gave positive responses toward the application of paired conversation activity by utilizing news-based material for teaching-learning EFL speaking. This technique allows the students got the good opportunity to speak at length and helps them to develop their oral language proficiency.

Abstract

This research aims to know enhancement the Student's writing ability by using wordless picture book as a contributive learning media. The benefits of using wordless picture book show that the students enhance their writing ability and create their creative writing and thinking skill. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method, with two groups namely experimental and control class. The experimental class consists of 30 students and control clas consists of 30 students. The subjects of the research were 60 students from two classes taken from students of SMP Negeri 10 Parepare. The research instrument was writing test in which the comparison of pre-test and post-test decided the enhancement of the Student's writing ability. The results of the data analysis showed that the Student's writing ability getting significantly improvement. It was proved by the mean score of pre-test was 46.93 and the post-test was 80.00. It indicates that the use of wordless picture book can enhance the Student's writing ability at SMP Negeri 10 Parepare. Besides, after analyzing the data by using the t-test formula, the result of t-test value in post-test was 6.02 and t-table value was 1.671. It meant that the t-test value was higher than t-table value. It clarified H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected and the students who were taught by using wordless picture book were better than the students who were taught by using wordless picture book.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how is the students’ and lecturer’s voices on the utilization of E-learning in teaching writing at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. E-learning can be a solution to various educational problems. In particular, the use of technology and information is actually believed to be able to improve the quality of learning, develop student skills, expand access to education and much more. The researchers intended to know how the utilization of e-learning specially in writing subject on pandemic era. It applied qualitative approach as a research design. The participants in this research are students of English education study program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. The selected samples were interviewed to get deep information about implementation of e-Learning in teaching writing. The result showed there was negative and positive responses of the students and lecturer about the implementation of e-learning specially in writing subject. The researchers concluded that the implementation of e-learning in learning writing should be considered and adapt with the lecturer, students and the environment. The lecturers have to master and has a quality before conducting an e-learning for the students specially for the content and delivering the materials so, it would make the students would not faced a difficulties thing when they learn by e-learning. Other side is the big problem of the students was bad network.

Abstract

The students’ reading comprehension need to be improved. One of the problems is caused by the teachers that still depend on the text book to teach students in teaching reading comprehension. Therefore, the researchers proposed a solution to overcome this problem by implementing a different learning strategy, namely sketch to stretch strategy. This research objective was to find out whether the implementation of sketch to stretch strategy able to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The researchers used a pre-experimental design with one group pretest and posttest design. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Suppa. The sample of this research was class VIII.2 consists of 23 students. In collecting data, the researchers used a reading comprehension test which was divided into pretest and posttest. The technique of analysis data used mean score and t-test formula for an independent sample. The findings demonstrated that the result of mean score in post-test (78.04) was higher than the mean score in pre-test (49.1). The posttest standard deviation was (10.1). At a significance level of 0.05 and a degree of freedom (df) of 22, the value of the t-test (17.558) was higher than the t-table (1.717). As a result, hypotheses H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. The researchers concluded that implementation of sketch to stretch strategy improves the reading comprehension competence of the students.

Abstract

In English Learning Teaching (ELT), digital photographs are considered a compelling visual medium to help students write English texts. A writing skill is a capacity to convert ideas into complete, comprehensive and understandable sentences that may be used to convey those ideas to the reader effectively. The purpose of this research is to find out whether using digital photographs can improve students’ skills in writing descriptive texts or not. The researchers used a descriptive quantitative pre-experimental method by applying digital pictures to teach writing descriptive text. The sample of this research consists of thirty students at SMP Negeri 1 Pangsid, South Sulawesi. The result shows that students’ writing skills increased by using digital photographs. The results are indicated by the mean value of the pretest (44,73) and the posttest (82,93). After calculating the t-test, the researchers found that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Using digital photographs as a teaching and learning medium can improve students’ skills n writing descriptive texts. In other words, this medium eases the students in constructing their ideas through descriptive essays.

Abstract

This research aims to know the integration of guided question technique in oral presentation method on students’ speaking ability at the second grade students of UPTD SMPN 1 Parepare. Many students had low in speaking due to lack of practice and lack of enthusiasm in studying English, therefore the students had no idea and confused about what they were going to say or speak. The researchers used a quasi-experimental method with a two-group design. The researchers used cluster random sampling and divided the students into two groups namely experimental group and control group. Each group consisted of twenty three students. In collecting the data with pretest and posttest, the form was an oral test and four meetings for the treatment. The technique of analysis data used mean score and t-test formula for an independent sample. The result of the data analysis showed there was an improvement in students’ speaking ability. The mean score of experimental class posttest was 76.04 and the mean score of control class was 71. Therefore, the end result was 2.389 > 1.680 means that was higher than and was rejected while was accepted. It can be concluded that the integration of guided question technique in oral presentation method improved speaking ability of the second grade students of UPTD SMPN 1 Parepare. The researchers concluded that by the integration of guided question technique in oral presentation method can help the students to overcome their problems and also made students spoke communicatively during presentations.

Abstract

During the Covid-19 pandemic, there were many ways that schools used to keep learning going, and one of the learning approaches that are meaningful and fun in the child's world is joyful Learning. SDIT Al-Furqan located in Enrekang regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, also felt the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The most visible effect is that their enthusiasm for Learning has decreased because they have been "sent home" for a long time. The researchers concluded that using children's songs will be easy to gain success in their listening goal and make the students more interested in learning English. For this reason, English for beginners in the new normal era through joyful Learning can be used as a choice to restore the learning mood of students. Joyful Learning assumed as a worthwhile learning activity in English. The researcher applied a pre-experimental class design with one group pretest and posttest design. The population of this research was fifth-grade students of SDIT AL-Furqan, Indonesia. The data analysis showed that the joyful learning method positively impacts the students. It was proved by the students' mean score in pretest was better than in posttest. Moreover, the students also give their positive perceptions of implementing joyful Learning. Briefly, joyful learning activities positively affect beginner elementary school students' English achievement.

Abstract

This study attempted to explore theme-based tasks using familiar topics in promoting learners’ productive skills namely speaking and writing skill at Indonesian secondary school context. This study was pre-experimental research undertaken in five junior secondary schools. There are eighty-six students participated as research respondents. Test and observation checklist used as research instruments. The research findings reported the mean scores on productive skills acquired by the students were getting improvement from pretest to posttest. In speaking skill, the mean score of posttest was 58.95 was better than 40.76 in pretest mean score. Similarly, the mean score of writing posttest was 76.85 was higher than 63.86 in pretest. It indicated that the progress of students’ score in speaking skill was 18.19 and the progress of students’ score in writing skill was 12.99. Although the gain scores in speaking and writing tests are slightly different, but it can be stated the students’ productive skills promote significantly. Then, the result of t-test value on students’ speaking skill posttest and pretest was 18.37, while the t-test value on students’ writing skill posttest and pretest was 16.42. The both of these values are higher than t-table value. It indicated there is a significant difference between pretest and posttest for both tests. The students’ English productive skills after treated by implementation of theme-based tasks were categorized as good achievement. Additionally, the majority of students’ learning activities in English class are categorized as good category. They participated positively in English learning activities in terms of good attention, high seriousness, and activeness in group work.Keywords: Familiar Topics, Improvement, Productive Language, Theme-Based Tasks

Abstract

Di era normal baru pandemi Covid-19 saat ini, siswa mengalami keterbatasan dan keluhan dalam proses pembelajaran jarak jauh atau aktivitas belajar di rumah terkhusus pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Mereka membutuhkan fasilitas berupa aktivitas pembelajaran langsung dan praktek untuk memacu keterampilan berbicara dan menulis Bahasa Inggris. Salah satu program pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PkM) yang dilakukan adalah menyajikan lingkungan dan suasana pembelajaran yang aktif, kreatif, asyik, terbuka dan divariasikan dengan games yang berbasis pembelajaran kolaboratif. Dalam hal ini, penerapan pendekatan pembelajaran kontekstual yang dikemas dalam Outdoor English Meeting Club (OEMC). Program OEMC dilaksanakan di sekitar kawasan wisata yang menarik. Program tersebut diawali dengan Opening Ceremony, Self Introduction, Conversation and Dialogue Practice, Guessing Words, Writing Practice, Quiz, Singing, and Closing Ceremony. Hasil yang dicapai dari PkM ini adalah kemampuan siswa sudah tergolong baik dalam mempraktekkan kemampuan berkomunikasi bahasa Inggris secara lisan dalam berdialog singkat meskipun masih dengan pengucapan dan struktur yang belum sempurna. perubahan yang signifikan juga terlihat pada diri anak-anak kelompok bimbingan belajar tersebut, dalam hal ini meningkatnya keinginan dan motivasi belajar mereka. Hal ini terlihat jelas ketika pelaksanaan program OEMC ini di lapangan, anak-anak sangat antusias dan bersemangat belajar. Rasa kepercayaan diri dan keberanian mereka dalam berbahasa Inggris juga meningkat.  Abstract. Abstract. In the new normal era of the current Covid-19 pandemic, students experience limitations and complaints in the remote instruction process or learning activities at home, especially in English subjects. They need facilities in the form of direct and practical learning activities to enhance their English speaking and writing skills. One of the community service programs carried out is to provide an active, creative, fun, open and varied learning environment and atmosphere with collaborative learning-based games. In this case, the application of a contextual learning approach is packaged in the Outdoor English Meeting Club (OEMC). The OEMC program is implemented around attractive tourist areas. The program begins with the opening ceremony, self-introduction, conversation and dialogue practice, guessing words, writing practice, quiz, singing, and closing ceremony. The results achieved from this program are that the students' ability is quite good in practicing their English communication skills orally in terms of short dialogues, although still with imperfect pronunciation and structure. Significant changes were also seen in the children in the tutoring group, in this case increasing their desire and motivation to learn. This can be seen clearly when the implementation of the OEMC program in the field, the children are very enthusiastic and eager to learn. Their confidence and courage in English competence also getting improvement.
