Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether or not there is significant effect of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) on the Ability of the Second Year Students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru in Comprehending Narrative Text. The research design is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was VIII-7 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. In order to collect the data, the pre-test and post-test were administered and then the data were statistically analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than mean score of pre-test. The value of t-test was higher than t-table at 5% of the significance level and t-table at 1% of the significance level. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was significant effect of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) on the Ability of the Second Year Students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru in Comprehending Narrative Text.Keywords: Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC), Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of using pictures in writing descriptive text at the second year students of MTs Hubbul Wathan Rimba Melintang Rokan Hilir in the Academic Year 2018/2019 This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test) which contain writing activities in describing pictures. The population of this research were the Second Year Students of MTs Hubbul Wathan Rimba Melintang Rokan Hilir. The sample of the research was the VIII A as big as 31 students. The needed data were collected by giving the writing test about descriptive text (pre-test and post-test) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pretest was 35.05, and the mean score of posttest was 38.92 and the difference between the two mean score was 3.87. Besides that, t-test of this research was -11.774 and t-table of this research was 2.042. It means that the t-test score is higher than t-table (-11.774>2.042). It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using Pictures on the ability in writing descriptive texts of the second year students at MTs Hubbul Wathan Rimba melintang Rohil. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. Thus, the use of pictures improves students writing ability especially in writing descriptive texts as media.Key Words: Pictures, Writing ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of role play technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. There are 8 classes in the third year. As many as 37 students of class IX 3 in the first semester of academic year 2018/2019 are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique due to the particular class presents various characters of the whole classes like; academic achievement, the students’ learning seriousness toward English and the size of the classroom. The instrument of the test is in the form of acting from script. To collect the needed data the treatments using role play technique were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 51.24 and the mean score of the post-test is 60.42. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (10.767>2.028) at 5% the significance level. Therefore, the alternative hyphotesis (H1) of this study is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of Role Play technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The implication of this finding is beneficial for the teachers in teaching and learning English especially in teaching speaking.Keywords: Effect, Role Play, Ability, Speaking.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out if there is any significant correlation between the second year students’ foreign language anxiety of English Study Program of Universitas Riau and their speaking ability. This is a correlational research with two variables. In conducting this research, 40 students were selected to be the sample using convenience sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a questionnaire adapted from the FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale designed by Horwitz et al, 1986). There were two kinds of data used in this study i.e. primary data which are the students’ questionnaire responses and secondary data which are their speaking III scores taken from the third semester of 2016/2017 academic year. The calculation of the students’ questionnaire responses resulted in a mean of 3,14, indicating a moderate level of anxiety. The correlation between the students’ foreign language anxiety and their speaking ability were measured using Pearson Product Moment method using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 23. The data analysis shows that the correlation coefficient value is -.339 and the correlation is significant at the 0.05 level (2-tailed) which means that there is a significant, low negative correlation between students’ foreign language anxiety and their speaking ability. This shows that a student’s speaking ability which is indicated by his/her speaking score tends to decrease as the increase of his/her anxiety level.Key Words: Correlation, Foreign Language Anxiety, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This main objective of study is to find out if there is a significant correlation between students’ motivation and their reading comprehension ability. The population of the study is 268 students of the second year students, while the sample is 35 students are by using the cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected through 25 questions reading comprehension ability test and 30 statements (questionnaires) about reading motivation. The result of the test was analysed by using Pearson Product Moment though SPSS version 23.0. From the analysis, it was found that the second year students’ of SMAN 1 Keritang were in the medium level in their reading motivation, meanwhile the students’ reading comprehension score was in the mediocre level. The correlation between both variables was in high correlation level which the coefficient of the correlation was 0.704. However, building motivation and mind-set about having a good reading motivation is essential to be recommended because it is very useful to develop students’ English skill and help them to face some tests which correlate with students’ reading comprehension ability.Key Words: Correlation, Reading Motivation, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the listening comprehension ability of the second year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The population of this research is the second year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The number of sample is 34 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data were multiple choice test items with 15 questions and true or false test items with 15 questions. The test constructed by referring to the components of listening comprehension that is listening to specific information, listening for main idea, listening for inference, listening for making evaluation, and listening for making appreciation. The data were analyzed by classifying them into four levels of mastery, such as poor, poor to average, average to good, and good to excellent. Based on the findings this research, it was found that the students’ listening comprehension ability of the second year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau was in average to good level with the mean score was 70.3. The implication of this research is that the second year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau have a good ability in listening comprehension.Key Words: Students’ ability, Listening comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out whether there is any significant effect of using jigsaw method on the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. This research was conducted at Pharmacy Vocational High School Pekanbaru from November August to September 2018. The population was all of first year students in academic year of 2018/2019. The number of the entire population was 266. The writer used cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample. The participant of this research was 35 students of X.5 class. This research consisted of 6 experiment meetings. The instrument of the research was multiple choice test. In analyzing the data, the writer used a statistical analysis. The writer used t-test to compare the difference of students’ score in pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the students before the treatment was 67.8571. The mean score of the students after the treatment was 80.4286. Moreover, from the statistical analysis, it was found out the T-test score (11.7) was higher than T-table (1.69). The finding showed that there was significant effect of jigsaw method on the students reading comprehension of descriptive texts. Based on this finding, it is suggested that Jigsaw method can be used by the teacher as an alternative method in the teaching of reading.Key Words: Jigsaw Method, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Texts.
