Abstract

This research discusses strategies in translating live metaphors on Dan Brown’s novels and translations in Indonesian. The aims of the research are to find out what live metaphors used in Dan Brown’s novels, to identify how live metaphors translated into Indonesian, to find out the principles are used in translating live metaphors, to find out the strategies that are used in translating live metaphors, to find out the most dominant strategy that is used in translating live metaphors. The method employed in this research is qualitative. The findings revealed that there are 75 live metaphors found in Dan Brown’s novels. 24 data were translated from metaphor into metaphor, 20 data were translated literally, 17 data were translated from metaphor into simile, 4 data have changed in sentence structure, 2 data translated by having expansion, 2 data were translated implicitly, 2 data were translated explicitly, 1 datum has changed in phrase structure, 3 data have changed in clause structure, 1 datum translated by having transposition. Those data are analyzed based on principle of translation: 40 data used idiom, 28 data used meaning, and 7 data used form principle.  Moreover the strategies which found out as follows :40 data (52%) used trope change (semantic strategy), 20 (27%) data used literal (syntactic strategy), 4 (6%) data used sentence structure change (syntactic strategy), 2 (3%) data used distribution change (semantic strategy), 4 (6%) data used explicitness change (pragmatic strategy), 1 (1%) datum used phrase structure change (syntactic strategy), 3 (4%) data used clause structure change (syntactic strategy), 1 (1%) datum used transposition (syntactic strategy).  According to the data analysis, the most dominate strategy is trope change. Keywords: Strategies, Translation, Live metaphors

Abstract

Analyzing literature works has been widely known as a complex spectrum because the words choice and  construction in any literature works can be done in free way. However, literature is known as a free instrument for people to express their feeling. The research discussed about a song entitled "O Mistress Mine" using Riffaterre's semiotic theory. The song is chosen as signifier from Shakespeare's play Twelfth night due to it represents lead character's situation for having unrequited love and a message for them to seize the day (carpe diem). O Mistress Mine might appear as a short song in the whole play but the meaning behind the lyrics convey the love line of the leads. Shakespeare's literature works has been known as a complex literature work because of his choice of words and words construction speak wihin his era. Meanwile in this era people might find out that grasping meaning from Shakespeare's literature works  is counted as complex work. Thus, the researcher chose Rifaterre's semiotic theory that includes three ways of analyzing the poem or song lyrics, in correlation to analyze further about figurative language and lead us to understand the meaning of the song. The research used qualitative method to find out symbols from the song and also using Riffaterre's semiotic theory. Purposive sampling is also used to pick the signs that have correlation with the message from Twelfth Night. The finding revealed there are three ways to analyze named displacing meaning, distorting meaning and creating meaning. Thus, there are 5 data used displacing meaning, 3 data used distorting meaning and 2 data used creating meaning. Furthermor, this research practically and theoritically can be used for the readers and students of English literature. this research practically and theoritically can be used for the readers and students of English literature.

Abstract

English has been studied for many years in Indonesia, it is important to recognize some common errors that are produced by the learners in order to help them improving. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the types and sources of syntactical errors that occur on fifth-semester students’ English writing. A qualitative descriptive method is used in this study. The results show there are 25 syntactical errors that consist of 3 errors in phrases and 22 error in clauses. The writers found there are 22 errors in clause. Furthermore, errors in clause the percentage show that misselection with 63%, addition with 23%, omission with 14% and misorder with 0%. Meanwhile, errors in clause, misselection error is the most frequent error occurred. Then, there are two sources of errors namely interlingual and intralingual errors. The writers found 8 data as interlingual errors and 17 data as intralingual errors. The intralingual errors are divided into four categories named overgeneralization (3 data). ignorance of rule restriction (10 data), incomplete application of rule (3 data), and false concept of hypothesis (1 datum).
