Abstract

Jurnal ini ditulis untuk  mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi siswa dalam mengidentifikasikan bunyi /k/ dan /s/ dalam Bahasa Inggris di STAIN Kerinci. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif qualitative. Data penelitian ini adalah hasil tes pronunciation dan  wawancara dengan mahasiswa. Hasil penelitian deskriptif ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa mahasiswa menemukan kendala dalam mengidentifikasikan bunyi /k/ dan bunyi /s/. Mereka beranggapan bahawa hanya huruf k yang diikuti oleh vokal saja yang dilafalkan /k/ sedangkan huruf c yang diikuti oleh oleh huruf h tidak dilafalkan /k/. Kemudian untuk bunyi /s/ yang diawali dengan huruf /s/ tidak dilafalkan /s/ dan juga kendala dalam mengidentikasikan bunyi disebabkan oleh kurangnya pengetahuan siswa tentang cara mengidentifikasikan bunyi dalam bahasa inggris, serta adanya pengaruh dari bahasa ibu meraka ketika melafalkan bunyi dalam bahasa inggris.

Abstract

Artikel ini ditulis untuk  mengetahui bagaimana masrakat sungai menyapa orang-orang yang memiliki hubungan pertalian darah dengan nya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif qualitative. Data penelitian ini adalah hasil observasi dan  wawancara dengan subject penelitian yang merupakan penduduk tetap Desa Sungai Liuk. Hasil penelitian deskriptif ini menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat Sungai Liuk memiliki sapaan yang berbeda terhadap orang-orang yang memiliki pertalian darah denga mereka, mulai dari bapak (abak) sampai ke cucu (grand son and grand dughter). Sapaan yang digunakan harus sesuai dengan hubungan pertalian darah yang ada serta status didalam pertalian darah itu sendiiri.

Abstract

Artikel ini ditulis untuk  mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi dosen dalam mengaplikasikan communicative language teaching dalam pengajaran reading di STAIN Kerinci. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif qualitative. Data penelitian ini adalah hasil observasi dan  wawancara dengan dosen. Hasil penelitian deskriptif ini menunjukkan bahwa dosen telah menggunakan indikator dari communicative language teaching dalam mengajar reading. Walaupun dosen sudah menggunakan indikator dari communicative language teaching, namun mereka masih menghadapi masalah. Masalah mereka berhubungan dengan masalah dalam menemukan materi dari internet, masalah dalam menggunakan media mengajar, dan perbedaan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam speaking. Jenis masalah yang paling banyak dihadapi oleh dosen adalah perbedaan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam speaking.

Abstract

This study examines each reading comprehension indicator and reading comprehension in general. Forty-five first-semester students of the English Education Department at Public Islamic Institute Jambi, Indonesia, which comprised of twenty-one males and twenty-four females voluntarily participated in this study. They were purposively selected as the sample of the research. This study used six indicators of reading comprehension and reading comprehension in general data. The descriptive quantitative approach was employed in this study as the research methodology. The descriptive statistic of SPSS 23 was applied to analyze the mean and standard deviation of six reading comprehension and reading comprehension in general. The criteria referenced interpretation and norm-referenced interpretation investigated interval of six reading comprehension and reading comprehension in general. The result of descriptive statistics and criteria referenced interpretation, and norm-referenced interpretation analysis showed five reading comprehension indicators in terms of author purpose, topic details, reference, and vocabulary in context in moderate criteria, except the main idea in which in high criteria. The reading comprehension was in moderate criteria similar to five reading comprehension indicators. Therefore, English lecturers hope to select an appropriate strategy and be well prepared to teach reading.

Abstract

 English novels add new dimensions to augmenting the second language or foreign language learners’ skills and competencies. However, English novels have little roles in the Indonesian ELT context and gradually fade away from Indonesian EFL learning’s programs today. This study, therefore, aimed at diagnosing the effects of English novels on augmenting EFL learners’ language skills and competencies. This research entailed a qualitative research approach. The English Department (ED) students numbering 20 were the research participants. The interviews, focus groups, and participant observation were the key techniques of collecting data. The 1994 Miles and Huberman model of data display, data reduction, and conclusion were stages of analyzing the data. The findings show that reading English novels extensively and intensively develop the ED students’ language skills of higher thinking skills, vocabulary acquisition, and productive-receptive skills of English and linguistic and pragmatic competencies. In conclusion, English novels discover a love of the language, practically improve and develop the 2nd-year ED students’ exposure to English language and lead them to communicate like native English speakers.

Abstract

This study sought to measures the foreign language classroom anxiety of the English Department students of a university in Indonesia and to compare the anxiety across independent demographic variables of gender and length of study at the department. The literature shows that foreign language learning anxiety affects one’s achievements in learning a foreign language. Data were collected through administration of the adapted version of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale to 96 students selected through stratified random sampling technique. The anxiety was assessed through Rasch analysis while analyses for significant difference in the anxiety across the two independent variables were conducted using tests of inferential statistics. The findings show the existence significant number of students who tend to be highly anxious in learning English. The findings also indicate a significant difference in the students’ anxiety across the independent variable of semester where semester 4 students tend to be more anxious than those of other semesters. No significant difference in the students’ anxiety was found across the independent variable of gender. The implications of these findings were then discussed.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of contextual teaching and learning approach on students’ reading comprehension achievement. The quasi experimental design was employed in this study involving experimental and control groups. The experimental class received the contextual teaching and learning approach while the control class received the conventional approach. A multiple choice test was used as the research instrument to look at students’ reading comprehension. Data were analyzed through using the parametric levene statistic and non parametric tests. The result revealed that the experimental and control classes had significantly different reading comprehension achievement. It was proved by the mean score of reading comprehension achievement and mean score of gain of the experimental class was higher than the control class. This study also provided information for the researchers and lecturers about how to implement contextual teaching and learning in teaching reading.

Abstract

Motivation in reading is very important for engaging learners in reading activity which can affect better reading comprehension. However, without motivation in reading can affect the worst reading comprehension. Therefore, motivation in reading needs to be constructed first by the teachers. This study examined whether intrinsic and extrinsic reading motivation different among students and reading motivation in general. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design. Eighty-five third-year students voluntarily returned the motivation reading questionnaire about their motivation in reading. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics using SPSS 23 and criteria-referenced and norm-referenced interpretations. From the analysis, it was found that most extrinsic reading motivation dimension percentages were slightly higher than intrinsic motivation and reading motivation dimension percentages in general in high category percentage. This study concludes that the external reason likely influenced students' motivation in reading. The students who were more motivated to read in this study were because of the expectation to get appreciation from others, good grades, better information from the text, and to finish the assignment. It also implies the theory of motivating students to engage with English reading texts.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the effectiveness of Experiential Learning (EL) model in improving prospective EFL teachers’ (PETs) teaching competence. The method of this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of planning, observing, acting, and reflecting phases. There were two cycles needed in implementing EL to the twenty one EFL learners as the participants. The results revealed that each subcompetence in cycle I and cycle II was achieved in the following score: planning & preparation for learning (Mean in cycle I=2,8; Mean in cycle II=3,38), classroom management (Mean in cycle I=2,5; Mean in cycle II=2,95), delivery of instruction (Mean in cycle I=2,6; Mean in cycle II=2,90), and monitoring, assessment, and follow-up (Mean in cycle I=2,4; Mean in cycle II=2,95). It can be concluded that EL is effective in improving PETs’ teaching competence.
