Abstract

Demand for traditional ship in Indonesia is very high, because the ship is used of fishermen for catching fish as a livelihood. Shipbuilders as manufactures play an important element in building safety and good traditional wooden ships. In the production process, the shipbuilders must be has proper quality control system, in order to match with the owner specification, regulation, and statutory. Therefore, this article discusses about quality control system in traditional ship production process. The research were conducted by direct survey to traditional shipbuilders in Bintan Island-Indonesia by inspect some ships by visual eyes only. From the survey, it was found many discrepancies occur, such as the use of wood has many defects, knur, knot and cracks. In addition, the wood concatenation process is not perfect, which can cause leakage. From the study, the shipbuilders should conduct quality control using other tools instead of visual technique only.

Abstract

Abstract

Primary Productivity on Abandoned Bauxite Mining Pits of Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands. The abandoned bauxite mining pits in Bintan Island have a good opportunity to be developed, especially as an aquaculture area. The objective of this study was to determine the primary productivity of the waters, phytoplankton ecological index, and physical and chemical parameters of the bauxite post-mining ponds in Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands. The study was conducted in April-August 2018 in two bauxite post-mining ponds (station 1 and 2) in Senggarang, Tanjungpinang City. The parameters observed were the abundance and ecological index of phytoplankton, aquatic primary productivity, physical and chemical parameters of the waters, and nutrients, N and P. From the study it was found that there were three phytoplankton divisions, consisted of three classes and eight genera. Mougeotia sp. was the dominant species of phytoplankton. The abandoned bauxite mining pits were classified as labile and the phytoplankton communities were under environmental stress due to the dominance of certain species. The abandoned bauxite mining pits were classified as young (inundation <5 years), low primary productivity, as well as oligotrophic waters. Net primary productivity in station 2 was higher than station 1, i.e. 1,23 mgC L-1 day-1 and 0,25 mgC L-1 day-1, respectively. The physical and chemical parameters of the bauxite post-mining ponds studied met the quality standards for freshwater aquaculture activities, except for pH and ammonia.

Abstract

Interest in the use of alternative renewable energy resources has been developed recently due to increased energy consumption and depletion of fossil fuel reserves. A major concern the world to reduce is dependence impact from fossil fuel consumption with renewable energy. Renewableenergy sources have enormous economic, environmental benefits and provide energy security. The most potential renewable energy sources of ocean energy include Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC). OTEC is a technology to generate electricity using a heat source thermal energy stored in the sea and is becoming increasingly attractive option to supply additional energy for many tropical countries and islands such as Riau Islands. Two monitoring stations were collected in Bintan Island using CTD. CTD profiler allows to the determination of derived and relevant quantities in situ measurement ocean temperature per depth. The relationship between ocean temperature and ocean depth represented with Regression Model Fit Analysis (RMFA). RMFA models to estimates ocean temperature profiles from CTD measurements. To predict ocean depths up to 2000 meters using Equation of State Model (EoSM) of ocean water. The OTEC efficiency value can be calculated using the equation of Carnot efficiency (η). Carnot efficiency maximum in Riau Island is η <0.7.

Abstract

Research on current pattern modeling has been carried out in the Kawal coastal area of Bintan Regency. Kawal Beach is a tourist area, settlement and anchorage for fishing boats. These conditions will have an impact on the sustainability of coastal activities and conditions such as abrasion, sedimentation and shoreline changes. The purpose of this study was to look at the movement patterns of currents generated by tides, winds and analyze the current phenomena that occur in the coastal area of the guard. This flow modeling is carried out for 5 days using software MIKE 21 by entering wind, tidal parameters as a current modeling generator force. Research results in getting currents in the coastal area of Kawal are classified as tidal currents. Current movement at high tide tends towards South-Southwest, while at low tide the movement pattern of the current leads to the North. Current conditions at the highest tide range between 0.6 - 1.80 m / s and relatively the same as current conditions when heading for the lowest ebb with a velocity value between 0.4 - 1.80 m / s.
