<![CDATA[Abstract: Rhizome lempuyang gajah (Zingiber zerumbet SM.)was believed to have various properties such as a tonic, stimulant and appetite enhancer. The purpose of this study was to test the tonic effect of the ethanol extract of rhizome lempuyang gajah to mice and determine the dose of ethanol extract of rhizome lempuyang gajah effective to provide a tonic effect.. Rhizome lempuyang gajah macerated with 96% ethanol. The method used to test the effect of the method Natatory Exhaustion tonic Provision of treatment in test animals were divided into five treatment groups. Group I was treated orally VCO 0,5 ml/20 g BB. Group II, III, IV was treated orally rhizome of lempuyang gajah ethanol extract respectively 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg BB. Group V were treated orally caffein 13 mg/kg BB. The data obtained were analyzed by One Sample Kolmogorof Smirnov continued ANOVA using SPSS 16 for windows with a confidence level of 95%. The resulit  tonic effect of ethanol extract of rhizome lempuyang gajah with doses 200, 400, 800 mg/kg BB  and caffein 13 mg/kg BB carespectively were (34,28 ± 7,627)%, (69,99 ± 6,143)%, (105,71 ± 4,164)% and (124,28 ± 3,642)%. Ethanol extract of rhizome lempuyang gajah may have the potential to be developed as a new tonic drugs.Keywords: Lempuyang gajah, Zingiber zerumbet, tonic, Natatory exhaustionAbstrak: Rimpang lempuyang gajah (Zingiber zerumbet SM.) dipercaya memiliki berbagai khasiat diantaranya sebagai tonikum, stimulan dan penambah nafsu makan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menguji efek tonikum ekstrak etanol rimpang lempuyang gajah terhadap hewan uji mencit dan menentukan dosis ekstrak etanol rimpang lempuyang gajah yang efektif memberikan efek tonikum. Rimpang lempuyang gajah dimaserasi dengan pelarut etanol 96%. Metode yang digunakan untuk uji efek tonikum yaitu metode Natatory Exhaustion. Pemberian perlakuan pada hewan uji dibagi menjadi lima kelompok perlakuan. Kelompok I diberi perlakuan peroral VCO 0,5 ml/20 g BB. Kelompok II, III, IV diberi perlakuan peroral ekstrak etanol rimpang lempuyang gajah berturut-turut 200, 400 dan 800 mg/kg BB. Kelompok V diberi perlakuan peroral kafein 13 mg/kg BB. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan uji One Sample Kolmogorof Smirnov dilanjutkan uji ANOVA mengunakan SPSS 16 for window dengan tingkat kepercayaan 95%. Hasil uji efek tonikum Ekstrak etanol rimpang lempuyang gajah memiliki dosis 200, 400, 800 mg/kg BB dan kafein 13mg/kgBB masing-masing adalah (34,28 ± 7,627)%, (69,99 ± 6,143)%, (105,71 ± 4,164)% dan (124,28 ± 3,642)%.Ekstrak etanol lempuyang gajah berpotensi untuk dikembangkan sebagai obat tonikum baru.Kata kunci : Lempuyang gajah, Zingiber zerumbet, tonikum, Natatory exhaustion]]>
