The Use of Guided Writing to Improve Students’ Writing Skill Dieni, Novita Al Ihyak

Abstract

This article reports a study on the implementation and the improvement of guided writing towards the student’s writing skill and to know the respond of the students towards the implementation of guided writing in the teaching and learning process at the second semester students of English Diploma III of Language and Culture Faculty in 17 Agustus 1945 Semarang University in the academic year of 2017/2018. The second semester students had problems dealing with writing skill. They have difficulties on: (1) expressing their idea in writing; (2) constructing correct sentences; and (3) vocabulary mastery. This study was categorized as a classroom action research. The study was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was consisted of four steps: plan, action, observation, and reflection. To collect the qualitative data, the researcher used observation. To collect the quantitative data, the researcher conducted tests before and after the research implementation. In this research, the researcher used guided writing and communicative & process approach to improve student’s writing skill. The result of the research shows that guided writing could improve the students’ writing skill. Through guided writing, the students showed great interest to be actively involved to the teaching and learning process. The students were able to construct sentences correctly. In this case, the sentences they constructed were based on the researcher’s explanation. They also used more vocabularies in their writing. Their mean score of the pre-test was 63.3, while their mean score at the post-test, increased up to 76.1.

Abstract

This paper aims to reveal factors that affect the students' participation in a speaking online class. The subjects are the second and fourth semester students of English department, Language and Culture Faculty, UNTAG Semarang. The research was held during the even semester of the academic year 2020/2021. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method. The data was based on the interview and the questionnaires filled by the students. Some technical issues came up in the online class such as internet connection which mostly became the hottest issue and also the device being used which was sometimes not compatible to the program used in the teaching and learning process. Those issues somehow have affected the online teaching and learning process. The other issues affected in online learning are students’ contribution and students’ condition. For those, it is hoped that the research will give a clearer explanation especially for the teachers who are struggling on teaching the online class and face a similar situation. Therefore, they can cope and handle it better. Keywords: online learning, participation, speaking class

Abstract

Online learning must be done by educators in distance learning during the handling Covid-19. Mastery of English skills that require direct practice must also be through online learning, for example, mastery of speaking skill by undergraduate students of English Study Program in Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) Semarang. From pre-observation data, there were many students who feel insecure, nervous, and embarrassed when practicing speaking. This is what causes students to be less maximal in mastering speaking skill. The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of online learning, focusing on using Google Classroom and Microsoft (MS) Teams in Speaking Course at the first semester students of English Study Program in Untag Semarang. So that researchers used experimental method. In data collection, researchers used a speaking test which was then analyzed using t-test formula. The data analyzed were the results of pre-tests and post-tests from two groups, namely experimental group and control group. From the results of the statistical analysis of t-test on the pre-test value, t count (1.04) < t table (1.7), it means that Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. From the results of the statistical analysis of t-test on post-test values, t count (1.5) < t table (1.76), it means that Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. From the results of statistical analysis of hypothesis tests, it can be concluded that there is no difference grades in Speaking Course between students taught using Google Classroom and students taught using Ms. Teams.

Abstract

The community service activity entitled "Improving English Language Skills for Fovere Hotel Semarang Airport Staff". The target partners are economically productive communities, namely hotel staff. The hospitality industry currently faced with intense competition, a hotel must be able to have excellent service to win the hearts of consumers. Because only hotels that have superior service will be able to win the competition. Hotel as a service business supporting tourism activities, where its management is carried out by professionals and supported by employess who have competence/good skills in the hospitality sector. English language skills have become very important for hospitality staff to have. It is because, not only guests from within the country who come to the hotel, but also guests from abroad. The English language skills are needed in establishing the communication. In the training program for hotel staff, it used communicative learning. This is because, training is held in the afternoon after they worked. So, if the training program is not interested to them, it will make English training less successful. English language exercises are more focused on how hotel staff can communicate. And proven, hotel staff are more fluently in using English when they did competency tests.

Abstract

This community service activity is included to the community partnership program. The targets are people who are not economically productive, they are the students of elementary school (SD), junior high school (SMP), and senior high school (SMA) in Pondok Babadan Baru, RT.01, RW. 13, Beji, East Ungaran. The activities carried out in this program are handling problems in learning English for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to most students, English subject is a difficult subject. To make it being easy, it needs a practice when we learn a language. In fact, most students do not use English in their daily life. One of the reasons is because of unsupportive environment, such as parents who cannot speak English. Another problem is in the learning system used in the pandemic era that is online learning. Even though students are familiar with technology, the technology used for learning is still foreign to them. Therefore, this community service activity will help students increasing their motivation in learning English during the pandemic so that their ability in reading, listening, speaking and writing using English can improve. The method of service activities applied is in the form of assistance in learning English through Google Meet application. The result of this service activity is increased students’ motivation in learning English during the pandemic which makes students to be confident in using English. The results of this activity are expected to be used as guidelines in dealing with children's problems in learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This community service is one of the activities in the community partnership program. The targets are people who are not economically productive, namely the students of the Qur'an Education Park/ TPQ Asy Syifa' Darussalam in Ringinarum District, Kendal Regency. The activity carried out in this community partnership program is to provide teaching about character education to children with video media. Animated videos were chosen as learning materials because children are usually more interested and easier to learn and understand something based on audio visuals. The study method on the results of this community service uses a qualitative descriptive study. The results of the activity showed that the children were quite enthusiastic in learning the material from the videos provided. The children looked more interactive in the discussion and question and answer (QA) sessions after the video screening and presentation of the material. They are also motivated to learn and practice moral values in their daily lives, so that the children not only  will be able to learn religious education, but they will also  have a good attitude and behavior.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menentukan tingkat keberhasilan dengan menggunakan 12 variabel respon mahasiswa terhadap dosen dan proses pembelajaran dari kuesioner kepada mahasiswa. Hasil kuesioner pada mahasiswa dilakukan dengan klasifikasi Baik, Sedang, Kurang yang sebelumnya dianalisis berdasakan uji validitas dan reabilitas hasil kuesioner. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, hasil penilaian variabel menghasilkan skor yang tinggi. Kemudian uji validitas variabel total adalah valid serta uji reliabilitas metode Cronbach’s Alpha adalah reliabel atau dapat dipercaya dan konsisten.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The United States is a continent full of immigrants. Immigrants are always related to identity issues and cultural adaptation due to diverse backgrounds. The life of immigrants is remarkably interesting to discuss, especially the problems they faced and the process of accepting their lives in the host country. Therefore, this paper will discuss the identity crisis experienced by the main character in pursuing the American dream in Girl in Translation. There are two objectives to be achieved in this study. The first objective is to find out the identity crisis experienced by the main character in Girl in Translation. The second objective is to find out how the main character overcomes the problems she faced. To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer will use mimetic theory as an approach. The method that will be used is qualitative method. Based on the analysis, it can be found that the main character experiences the identity crisis through language, dwelling, food, clothes, lifestyle, and moral. To overcome the identity crisis, the main character uses hybrid identity. The mixed identities make the main character become a Chinese-American. Keywords: main character; identity crisis; the American dream; Chinese immigrants; American culture.

Abstract

Presupposition is one of the topics in pragmatic studies. In this thesis, the writers focuse more on the discussion of presuppositions in pragmatic studies, where presuppositions are everything that is in one's mind about everything that exists in this world. Presuppositions are needed to understand the meaning of a conversation between the speaker and the listener so that there is no misunderstanding in communication. In this research the writers use a descriptive research method, because all data comes from film script. Presuppositions in Encanto movie taken from the dialogues of the characters in the movie and analyzed based on the theories by Yule (1996) and classifying them into various types of presuppositions. The result of this study shows that there are many variation of presupposition contained in this move script. There are six presuppositions, specifically 5 existential, 14 factive, 1 non-factive, 3 lexical, 23 structural, and 5 counterfactual. Data analysis shows that there are several types of presuppositions contained in this movie. From this research, the writers hope that this thesis can be useful as an additional knowledge for future researchers who discuss pragmatic studies, especially presuppositions.
