Abstract

ABSTRACT : Mount Kelud in Blitar Regency, East Java is one of the volcanoes in Indonesia that has pumice and scoria material that the amount is abundant and is still lacking for its use. This research is based on the idea of geotechnical engineering to improve the characteristics of chrused pumice and scoria in terms to reduce the permeability with bioclogging which is believed can cause of clogging in the pores because of slime or expolisaccharide bonds that produced by Lactobacillus Sakei and Bacillus Subtilis bacteria. This research was conducted by variations in rock types, grain grading, relative density, and types of bacteria with a total of 8 samples without bacteria, 8 samples with Lactobacullis Sakei, and 8 samples with Bacillus Subtilis. As a result, crushed pumice and scoria without bacteria for physical characteristics are classified clean graded sand (SW) based on USCS and classified as fine sand (A-1-b) based on AASHTO. Mineralogical characteristics results on SEM-EDX and XRD tests on crushed pumice and scoria have dominant elements Si and Al and have a dominant compound in the form of anorthite Ca (A12Si2O8). The results of permeability testing without bacteria are 0,00035 – 0,0351 cm/sec, the results with bioclogging using Lactobacillus Sakei are between 0,00018 - 0.0218 cm/sec and the result with Bacillus Subtilis have a smaller permeability value between 0,000112 - 0 , 0195 cm/sec. The results of the biggest percentage of permeability reduced due to bioclogging in the Bacillus Subtilis sample are 82,957% and in the Lactobacillus Sakei sample are 73,019% with the conclusion that the Bacillus Subtilis bacteria had a greater effect on reducing permeability compared to Lactobacillus Sakei.   Keywords : Permeability, Bioclogging, Crushed Pumice, Crushed Scoria
