ABSTRACTThis research is aimed at gaining a description of the types of errors committed by the students based on Communicative Effect Taxonomy and Speaking Aspects involved, and the error correction strategies employed by the teacher. The subjects of this research were a class of the second year students and their respective English teacher. The data of this research were gathered by conducting class observation, filling in classroom checklist, and recording.The research reveals that: (1) There are 199 items of deviations committed by the students in which 109, 77 and 13 items belong to phonological, grammatical and lexical aspect respectively. (2) There are 107 erroneous utterances committed by the students in which 83 and 24 erroneous utterances fall under local and global type respectively. (3) 72 items of deviations or 36 utterances, 20 local and 16 global errors, did not get any correction at all. The teacher corrected 52 erroneous utterances and other 19 utterances were corrected by the peers. The teacher just used three of ten precise techniques to correct the errors.Key Words: error, error items, erroneous utterances, correction strategies, deviation
