Abstract

The problem raised in this study is how to use grammatical cohesion in the novel Burung Rantau Pulang ke Sarang by Teuku Azhar Ibrahim? The purpose of this study is to describe the use of grammatical cohesion in the novel Burung Rantau Pulang ke Sarang by Teuku Azhar Ibrahim. The method used in this research is descriptive method using a qualitative approach. The data in this study are grammatical cohesion in Teuku Azhar Ibrahim novel Burung Rantau Pulang ke Sarang. The data source of this research is the novel Burung Rantau Pulang ke Sarang by Teuku Azhar Ibrahim, published by Bandar Publishing, 2010. The data collection technique in this study uses document review techniques which are carried out by observation (reading) and making notes. The data processing technique is performed by classifying the data according to the type of grammatical cohesion, namely reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Based on the four types of grammatical cohesion, 1,189 data were obtained consisting of 224 reference data, namely, endophora (anaphora totaling 207 data and 15 data katafora), exophoric reference of 2 data. There are 8 substitution data consisting of 8 clausal substitution data, and there were no nominal substitution, verbal substitution, fractal substitution. There are 20 ellipsis data consisting of 17 nominal ellipsis data, no verbal ellipsis was found, 1 fractal ellipsis data, and 2 clausal ellipsis data. Conjunction there are 937 data consisting of 3 correlative data, 499 subordinate data, and 435 coordinative data. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the type of grammatical cohesion that is most widely used in Teuku Azhar Ibrahim's Burung Rantau Pulang ke Sarang is conjunction.
