Abstract

Brain Protection for Cardiac SugeryDespite more than 30 years of aggressive neuroprotective research by many investigators, neuropsychological deficit after cardiac surgery remains an important cause of postoperative morbidity. Neurological outcome is a result of a multifactorial etiology, many physicians world-wide have recognize the importance of this problem, and extensive efforts have been made in attempting to m inimize the incidence of neurological and neurocognitive dysfunction. Strategis for brain protection in cardiac surgery can be considered in two stages, prevention and therapy, each utilizing pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. Still to be defined are the strategies that could be effectively either prevent, reduce or ameliorate both stroke and neurological injury could encompass preoperative screening and optimization, intraoperative monitoring and management strategies, and early postoperative diagnosis and therapy.
