Abstract

The  growth  of  Indonesian  literary works  began  since  the  generation  of  Pujangga  Baru brought literature to the surface. Many poets, novelists, and writers emerged, bringing about their works which remain popular in the present. This paper is a critical discourse analysis which aims to find the dominant ideology represented in the Contemporary Indonesian Poetry from the 1960s to the 1970s. The data were taken from Contemporary Indonesian Poetry translated by Harry Aveling (1975). There are 11 poems that were analyzed in this study. They are Sermon, Pickpocket’s Advice to His Mistress, and Prostitutes of Jakarta Unite! by W.S  Rendra,  Two  Poems  with  One  Title,  Space,  and  Who  Are  You  by  Sapardi  Djoko Damono, Between Us, Prayer and Image by Ajip Rosidi, and A Tale Before Sleep and Cold Unregistered by Gunawan Muhammad. By using the Seven Building Tasks proposed by James Paul Gee (2011), the researchers analyzed each poem based on the seven tasks. The result shows that the dominant ideologies in Contemporary Indonesian Poetry from the 1960s to  the  1970s  are  in  the matters  of socialism  and  humanism.  Socialism  here  covers  the condition of social life at that time where there power abuse occurred from the powerful people  towards  the  powerless  ones.  On  the  other  hand,  humanism  merely  covers  the condition of human beings, especially Indonesians, at that time. Keywords:  ideology,  critical  discourse  analysis,  seven  building  tasks,  contemporaryIndonesian poetry.

Abstract

The study of world literature focuses on how literary work circulates differently worldwide. It is through translation that literary work is circulated and interpreted differently worldwide. The difference in the reception of literary work across places and time is attributed to textual and extra-textual constraints in translation, such as ideology, power, poetics of the time, and institution. To understand how literary work manifests differently abroad than it does at home, critical reading of translation is needed in the study of world literature. The ccritical reading of translation can be done in two ways. The first way is by juxtaposing different translations of the same literary text to explicate the different translation strategies applied by the translators. The ssecond way is by identifying the remainders in the translation to disrupt the transparency of the translation. Both of these ways will reveal cultural differences between target and source culture, and also the influence of iideology, power, poetics and institution to the reception of literary text which varies across places and time. Keywords: world literature, translation, reception of foreign literature,    constraints of translation

Abstract

This paper analyses the semantics, syntax, equivalence, fluency and authenticity of the translation of a Swahili poem entitled “Ewe Bibi Mwenye Enzi” by Seif Salum which was translated into English by the poetry translation workshop from the site http://www.poetrytranslation.org/poems/in/swahili/P12 as “This Love”. The introductory part discusses and pays recognition to the concept of untranslatability of the poetry where writers, such as Adam Czerniawski, Hatim Basil and Munday Jeremy, second the idea that poetry is untranslatable since poetry is a reflection of a particular society. Poetry also uses language but language is the reflection of people’s definition of their immediate environment, hence in that sense poetry is untranslatable since different societies have different views of their environments and the world. However, due to the increased curiosity which is partly a result of globalization of the world, people want to have diverse knowledge of everything. This makes it necessary to translate poetry anyway. In this case, poems, such as this one, have also been translated. Therefore, this paper tries to make analysis on how the change of language from Swahili to English have affected the semantics, syntax, equivalence, fluency and authenticity of the style and message of the poem.Keywords: translatability, poetry, style, message, authenticity

Abstract

Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” (1953) criticizes the experience of human’s isolation, vanity, and disillusionment in Southern America under political instability, dictatorial regime, hypocrisy of the church and high number of poverty that can lead to the crisis of faith and humanity in people’s life. By presenting the violence, horror, and emotional freak in the story, O’Connor wishes that the characters can come to their self-realization upon their faith and humanity. This paper finds out that the portrayal of grotesque character in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” can be seen as a mechanism to purify the Southern American society in the twentieth century that has already been far away from their religious belief. Keywords: Grotesque, Purification, Southern America, Flannery O’Connor

Abstract

As one of the Four Great Classic Novels of Chinese literature, Romance of the Three Kingdoms found its way to the constellation of World Literature via translation and being adapted into the movie Red Cliff (2008) and famous video games series Dynasty Warriors (1997-now). This process further made the story of the Three Kingdom is widely known as many cinemagoers and gamers can associate themselves with the story in the form that they adore. Both processes, however, have disadvantages as they erase the Chinese cultural elements that are demonstrated in the novel. This novel is also heavily riddled with patriarchal paradigm that makes scholars consider Romance of the Three Kingdoms “masculine novel” by portraying women in a very weak position in Chinese society. This paper would try to dissect the issues of translation and women portrayal in detail by analyzing the translated work of Romance of the Three Kingdoms to see what cultural aspect that is disappear as a result of translation and dissecting the dismissive and derogative portrayal of several women characters in the novel.Keywords: Luo Guanzhong, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Feminism, World Literature

Abstract

Ancient stories which depict similarities in their details of the narrative can be found in various cultures and civilization. Two stories that look similar to each other are the ancient text of The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Biblical book of Genesis. The deluge, observed in both stories, seems to have an impact towards the ever-famous discussion of which story is more authentic. This article gives a comparative analysis of both stories. The aim of this study does not concern with such discussions, rather arguing how both stories, after investigating the similarities and differences, generates a myth—which may come from a factual  history—for  their  respective  people  and  culture,  preserving  cultural  history, rational conducts, and religious rituals of each culture concerned.Keywords: Genesis, Epic of Gilgamesh, Noah, Utanapishtim, Ancient Text, Mythology

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the representation of disability and to identify thediscourse resulted from the pattern of its portrayal in four selected Indonesian children’sshorts stories, namely “Kacamata UFO”, “Gadis Penari”, “Bapak Si Dono”, and “Cerita Riondengan Sebelah Mata” published in Bobo magazine. Applying the lens of Said’s Orientalism,this content analysis study shows that children with disabilities are presented as weak,dependent, not productive, an object of curiosity and violence, and a vehicle for the growth ofother characters in the story. This study concludes that literacy on disability for Indonesianpeople is significant. Such writing is to provide a positive image and reduce the negativestereotype which is currently shared among society.Keywords: children’s literature, disability, representation, short stories

Abstract

The aim of Indonesia National Education is to bring its people and country towards betterdevelopment of skills and characters or attitude in order to be democratic and responsiblecitizens. A curriculum needs to be created in order to support the achievement of this goal.The current curriculum 2013, has tried to emphasize on knowledge, skills and attitude all ofwhich are in line with the goal of Indonesia National Education. It emphasizes on three typesof learning namely project-based, problem-based, and discovery learning in order to promotemore skilful people. Yet, it is problematic in some ways for it does not provide enough timeallocation for knowledge and skill development. English is now taught in one meeting only ina week. Also, the problem lies in the assessment. It separates the assessment of knowledge,skills, and attitude. It seems to forget that in those types of learning, students have to integratethose aspects in order to accomplish a projector to solve a problem. The partial assessmentmakes those types of learning impossible. Therefore, an alternative authentic and holisticassessment for a year project for vocational high school students is developed to improvestudents‟ progress as a whole.Keywords: project-based learning, authentic assessment, vocational high school

Abstract

Assessment in the learning process is very important. It is useful to know whether the teaching and learning process succeed or not. It can help to identify the students‘achievement. An assessment is usually done by teachers and it covers the three aspects;knowledge, skills, and attitude (social and spiritual). In accordance with curriculum 2013, thisstudy develops the model of assessment which is simpler and integrated. Moreover, teachersright now have many things to do related with administration affairs and other portfolios.They do not want to be burdened with some kinds of evaluation or assessment forms whichwill take too much of their time. This study, therefore, is aimed at designing a holistic modelof assessment, which is designed for the unit lesson. The model is a holistic assessmentmodel. In the model, Core Competence 1 (CC1) and Core Competence 2 (CC2) are notindicated explicitly because they are integrated in Core Competence 3 (CC3) and CoreCompetence 4 (CC4). The data were collected by having group discussion and sharing aquestionnaire to the students in English Language Studies. The result of this study is aholistic model of assessment to assess Junior High School students‘ achievement in learningEnglish. This model of assessment is designed especially to assess students‘ achievement inevery unit lesson. The model is presented in a table with likert scale scoring of 1 to 4. Someexplanation is also needed in certain points. The assessment is conducted by the students,they do self-assessment and peer assessment. The teacher does portfolio assessment of thestudent‘s work. A Holistic Assessment for Junior High School is the appropriate formbecause in the model, a holistic approach has been implemented: the contents are not toocomplex but they already represent the whole competence.Keywords: assessment, knowledge, skill, attitude, holistic, Core Competence

Abstract

Curriculum 2013 has just been implemented at schools in Indonesia, and its implementationhas brought pros and cons among academicians. One of the major constructive criticismsrelated to the implementation of curriculum 2013 deals with the application of the creation.Bloom claims that creating places the top level among the thinking skills (Pohl, 2000).Furthermore, Dyers (2011) states that the main goal of each learning process is to improvethe learners‟ creativity. This paper focuses on the evaluation of learner assessment; hence, itaims to propose an alternative model of learner assessment based on curriculum 2013 byfocusing on the concept of scientific approach especially on creation and also the concept ofpositivism. Moreover, the result of Forum Group Discussion (FGD) shows positive feedback.The findings obtained from FGD generally show more positive feedback than the negativeone. In brief, it can be concluded that the model has been better because it provides creation,clear description, and it may encourage building positive characters of the learners.Keywords: evaluation model, problem based, learner assessment, creation, scientific approach, positivism
