Abstract

The present study is aimed at providing translating theory of English into Indonesian and vice versa. In achieving the aim, content analysis of expressive (poem), informative (report andacademic), and vocative text (advertisement) is applied. The analysis is based on threeaspects consisting of grammatical structure, cultural words, and writing mechanic. The resultshows that the translator needs to adapt the grammatical structure, cultural words, and writingmechanic of source language into target language. However, there are exceptions in culturalwords and capitalization. In translating from English into Indonesian especially in academictext, some English words are assimilated into Indonesian (foreignization). In translatingIndonesian poem into English, the target text capitalization imitates source textcapitalization. Besides, for the purpose of attractiveness, persuasion, and effectiveness intranslating Indonesian advertisement into English, different words are prefered but themeaning is retained. Abstract

In our lives, there are many instances where we encounter jokes. The media; printed, online, or broadcasted, presents jokes in many ways. Some television programs have their own form of humour such as through talk shows or other kinds of performances. In printed media, we can read humour through comic. Online media also provides certain sites to deliver jokes. We are familiar with 9gag or other sites which post funny pictures or memes. This paper is going to analyse how the jokes in online media is presented using a pragmatic point of view. The researchers took the data from the website and chose the joke about school life and analysed the 30 school jokes using the reference and maxim theory. The result of this study shows that in order to create a school joke, the joke maker violates the reference and maxim.  Keywords: school joke, reference, maxim

Abstract

This paper aims to chart how literary work of non-Western origin is incorporated into World English Literature by giving example of two Chinese Classic Novels. Among the Chinese Classic Novels, Journey to the West is the novel that achieves wider popularity among Western scholars and canonized while other Chinese Classic Novels are not as popular especially among Western academia. The different reception is related also with how both novels are circulated, translated, and adapted from Chinese into English. The emphasis of this paper is to compare the issue of circulation, translation, and adaptation between Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms as another Chinese Classic Novel. By comparing different issues of how both novels enter the Western World, this paper hopes to have an insight regarding how these two novels have different popularity among academic scholars.Keywords: charting World English Literature, Chinese classics novels

Abstract

In language learning, mastery of vocabulary is crucial. However, in Indonesia, where English is taught as a foreign language, vocabulary is often taught incidentally and given little priority. Due to the importance of vocabulary, a comprehensive language learning strategy is needed. As an example, vocabulary-learning strategies (VLS) can facilitate the development of vocabulary. This study aims at investigating VLS used by junior high school students in learning English. The data were collected by using Schmitt’s vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 31 statements administered to 50 junior high school students in the 8th grade at SMP N I Salatiga. Interviews were also conducted to obtain more information from the participants. The results show that the students choose practical, simple and fast strategies in learning vocabulary. Strategies such as checking if the word is also an Indonesian word, guessing the word’s meaning from the context, asking the teacher to give the definition, studying the word with their classmates, remembering the word by studying and paying attention to the word’s spelling, underlining the word, and using English media were frequently chosen in this study.

Abstract

This study investigates the discrimination against three Afro-American women in Hidden Figures. Critical Discourse Analysis proposed by Fairclough (2012) was used in this study to deconstruct the discrimination and provide solutions to tackle the problem. The CDA was supported by the analysis on language through Systemic Functional Grammar by Halliday (2004) and the analysis on body language by Jäger and Maier (2009). The result shows that the discrimination in the movie can be differentiated into discrimination based on the level and the cause. The discrimination based on the level includes the individual, institutional and structural discrimination. Based on the cause, discrimination based on race (racism) and discrimination based on gender (sexism) are illustrated in the movie. The racism is developed from racist ideology, while the sexism is caused by sexist ideology. Abstract

Most research on corrective feedback and learner uptake inspired by Lyster and Ranta (1997) has been conducted with students belonging to various age groups. This study was undertaken to investigate the occurrence of corrective feedback and uptake in young children bilingual context whose age ranged from 5 to 6 or children in bilingual kindergarten in Indonesia. Transcripts of 100 minutes of lessons in Blossoms class of Satya Wacana Children Centre, Salatiga, were analyzed to answer these two research questions: (1) What types of learner errors lead to what types of corrective feedback in young children bilingual classroom? and (2) what is the uptake rate of each type of feedback and the relationship between learner errors, feedback, and learner uptake? The results revealed that the majority feedback provided for grammatical errors was repetition. The majority feedback given on phonological errors was recast. Then, explicit correction was the most frequent feedback for lexical errors. This study also found that elicitation and repetition led to the highest uptake rate. Although recast in this study did not lead to a high uptake rate compared with other types of feedback, in the case of phonological errors, recast did lead to a high uptake and repair rate. This study also provided an integrated picture about the relationship between learner errors, feedback, and learner uptake. Overall, there were differences in the patterns of feedback and uptake between this study and previous studies, which were interpreted with the reference to the unique characteristics of the instructional context. Keywords: Corrective feedback, uptake, bilingual young children

Abstract

LGBTIQ has become a controversial topic concerning one’s sexual preference over the past few years in Indonesia. Indonesian sexuality will always intersect with the norms, religious values and the state laws. Therefore, this phenomenon is socially binding as it restricts the identity construction of differing sexual preferences in Indonesia. The issue about sexuality particularly LGBTIQ is addressed in several Indonesian literature, given the significant and notable increase in Indonesian novels with LGBTIQ themes since 2000s. Taking the novels of Ayu Utami’s Saman and Djenar Mahesa Ayu’s Nayla as the objects of investigation, this study examines (1) how Bourdieusian symbolic violence is being questioned in the novels (2) how these novels also challenge the hetero-normativity in Indonesia. The study reveals the symbolic violence towards the lesbian characters in the selected novels through the process of ‘normalisation.’ However, by raising the issues of lesbianism, the novels and their circulation can somehow be seen as a form of resistance towards the Indonesian homophobic society.Keywords: symbolic violence, Indonesian novels, lesbianism, heteronormativity

Abstract

A creole is a pidgin that has attained the first generation of the speaker. The formation of a creole might be influenced by several factors and the two of them are code-switching and the influence of a dominant language. In relation to the two factors, there is a creole that might fit the situation. The creole is the Tetun-Portu language and the creole is presumably invented from the combination between the Tetun-Terik language and the Portuguese language. The backbone of the language might be adopted from the Tetun-Terik language but the codes have been dominated by the Portuguese language. The invention of the creole might be related to the Portuguese occupation in the Timor Island several centuries ago. Due to the interesting characteristics, the researcher would like to investigate the creole further. In conducting the study, the focus will be on how the code-switching influence the invention of the creole and the Portuguese influence within the invention of the creole itself. The findings of the study confirm that the Tetun-Portu language might be considered as a creole because it has completely different structures and it has adopted more codes from the Portuguese language.Keywords: Creole, Tetun-Terik, Tetun-Portu, code-switching, Portuguese influence

Abstract

This article explores symbolic violence experienced by men and women in their everydaylives as portrayed in selected Eka Kurniawan’s works: Beauty is a Wound (2016), Man Tiger(2015), and Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash (2017). In order to identify the symbolicviolence, Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence is applied in this research. Thefinding of this research indicates that symbolic violence experienced by men and women isthe result of patriarchal system which is manifested in culture and tradition. This culture andtradition has power to discipline society and it also induces symbolic violence towardssociety since they are required to follow the patriarchal values or stereotype. The symbolicviolence against men and women in selected Kurniawan’s works are depicted througharranged marriage, marital rape, women’s obligation in domestic domain, and men’s sexualperformance and masculinity.Keywords: patriarchy, symbolic violence, stereotype

Abstract

Assessment is one of integrated parts in teaching and learning process. Due to the change of curriculum in Indonesia, the assessment type which the teachers should use to assess theirstudents is different. According to Curriculum 2013, teachers need to assess every studentthoroughly, including their knowledge, skills, and attitudes. In fact, teachers still finddifficulties in assessing their students. This phenomenon also happens to the teachers ofjunior high schools. This research aims to develop a mid-semester assessment model which ismore practical and less time-consuming for English teachers in junior high schools. Themethod was Research and Development (R&D). The data were collected from groupdiscussion, questionnaires, and interviews. The result of the research is a holistic Englishassessment model which can be used for a mid-semester period. A holistic assessment coversthe partial and contextual aspects of teaching and learning. It consists of two types: studentassessment and portfolio assessment. This assessment model is expected to improve theeffectiveness of the assessment technique for junior high schools and to provide moreopportunities for teachers to conduct the mid-term assessment which is not really taken intoaccount as a part of classroom activities.
