Abstract

In Architecture context is a glorious substitute, although in reason, context can deliver architecture to a more humane product, but is it possible to adapt the context without empathy? Does the designer experience the process of empathy in the architecture of the designer? By studying how empathy works and seeing its impact on an event, can provides new narratives rather then just seeing the user purely as an object of observation. Political decisions, a view of culture, and an understanding of local traditions can be used an important inform in defining a quality of space. the presence of empathy can contribute to decisions taken by the perpetrator on the object of empathy. How can empathy be used in architecture? how empathy affect human decision? This Paper will study Empathy Thoroughly both from it’s origin and how years of discourses have change it, anlyze how it can be used for architecture. Later, the understood concept will be reflected towards the 1950’s of Indonesian urban and architecture.

Abstract

This paper is aimed at contextualizing the approach of Community Based Development as an alternative solution of communities to reduce dependency to the outer forces. It is conducted by examining a heavily urbanized area in Central Jakarta and to compare it with different scales of contexts. Kelurahan Cideng has very unique context since its urban environment has particular population composition of the dichotomic extremes: the poor and the rich as well as those involved in formal and informal employment. The study treats a national government’s policy of the integration of Posyandu, BKK and provincial initiative of PAUD as the interplay with the socio-economic context of Cideng.

Abstract

The study examines the morphology of the settements along the Musi riverbank and focuses on the association between the settlements morphology and the characteristic of the river. Musi River consists of three river zones, i.e. upstream, middle, and downstream. The specific morphology that was studied is the distance of the buffer area, the building orientation, and the housing typology that were compared to the physical characteristics of the river and the socio-cultural of the communities. The study data was collected through satellite map and field survey on three settlement sites for each zone, including maps, sketches, photographs, and interviews. The results show the main factors influencing the settlement morphology is the community's dependent on the river. The function of the river for daily life activities influences the distance and the orientation of the settlements. The more the functions of the river for the daily life, the closer and the more oriented their settlements are to the river. Therefore, the river disasters, such as flood and erosion should keep the settlement away from the riverbank. However, the dependence on the river creates the adaptation to on building the settlements that adapt to the natural cycle. It also establishes the morphology of the settlements on the riverbank.

Abstract

The building of worship is a building that has sacred spaces as a container of its activities. The case study taken in this research is the historic mosque which is often referred to as a sacred mosque because of the tomb of Habib Islamic syiar carrier. The existence of the tomb inside the mosque is what makes the mosque visited by pilgrims and pilgrims and has various activities related to worship and pilgrimage. The purpose of this research is to get a conclusion about the sacred space and its meaning in Masjid Jami 'AlMukarromah Kampung Bandan. This research uses descriptive interpretive method. Field observations were conducted by, first, observation of study subjects, ie by observing the activities undertaken at Masjid Jami 'Al Mukarromah Kampung Bandan. From activity observation can be found sacred activity and profane activity. Second, observing the spaces used sacred activities that are done in the mosque. Interviews were conducted with the main sources and direct descendants of Habib Alwi bin Ali As-Syatiri. The result of this study is that the sacred space of the Jami 'AlMukarromah mosque has a clear definition and is reflected in its physical form. The sacred space used is the main prayer room as the sacred space which has the highest hierarchy. The main prayer room is part of the expansion building. Sacred space of pilgrimage is on the part adjacent to the tomb and the original part of the mosque which is often called the Nine pillars. The area adjacent to the tomb is an important area so the expansion or renovation of the mosque does not change the original form. The sacred space used for the haul activity is the same as the sacred space for pilgrimage, that is, in the section adjacent to the tomb and pillar of nine

Abstract

Every child has uniqueness includes the habit in the room, and how to respond to the setting of space. The child's movement in space is related to space and time. Different child behaviors will produce different responses to the space and time. Early childhood education is a basic early childhood to determine the development of children in the future. The objective of this research is to find out early childhood behavior in class settings and factors that influence it. The location of this research is PAUD Ratnaningsih in Yogyakarta, on main role central class. Technique of data collection was done by observation and interview. Method of observation is behavioral mapping focused on children motion. This is to describe the motion of children on the map, to identify the type and frequency of motion and to indicate the relation of motion to the class setting, using the place centered mapping method. The results of this study indicate that the class setting in PAUD Ratnaningsih using a central system that every central consist of activity settings by moving system. Early childhood cannot stay for long time in every activity setting because feel bored, frequently move to other positions. Children cannot focus in long time, behave aimlessly. External factors affect the child's behavior such as elements of space, role of teacher, and the design of activity setting.

Abstract

There is a usual positive correlation between infrastructure development and property values. However, in Bulawayo, this correlation does not usually follow in all aspects of properties transactions. This research seeks to find out trends in infrastructure development and property values in the city of Bulawayo. This research took a mixed methods approach in data collection; both qualitative and quantitative methods were utilized. Questionnaires were administered to people in low-income areas of Pumula, Cowdrey Park and Emganwini. In-depth interviews with key informants in the real estate sector were done to cross-fertilize and enrich the inquiry. This research found out that in most cases there is a strong correlation between infrastructure development and property values, but in some cases, there is not any correlation as some forces are put in play distorting the market play. This research also discovered that apart from infrastructure, property values in Bulawayo’s low-income residential suburbs are also affected by income, supply, and demand factors.

Abstract

Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a topic that is currently much discussed by architects. Besides discussed by architects, TOD is also much considered by people of various disciplines, such as urban designer, urban planner, property developer, policy developer, etc. The TOD concept understood by architects may be different from the one understood by people of other disciplines. This article compares the TOD concept followed by (candidates of) architecture graduates with the TOD concept that is discussed by people of different disciplines. This article examines the TOD concept that is understood and applied to the architectural design of three architecture graduate candidates with the state of the art of the TOD concept. The comparison is carried out through direct observation of the architectural designing process of the three candidates and reading of the articles written by the candidates recording and summarizing their designing process and the rationales of their designs. It is found that the candidates are very familiar with the regional physical design aspect of TOD (i.e., land-use, density and street network) but are not very familiar with other elements (i.e., residents’ mobility, built environment development staging, and transit and property market and development financing). While the candidates applied TOD principles on land-use, density, and street network in their designs, they did not apply TOD principles on the mentioned other aspects. This article shows the TOD concept as understood by architecture graduates and the understanding’s position within the state of the art of the TOD concept; this article may serve as the shared footing for people of various disciplines to plan and design TOD.
