Abstract

This study was conducted during COVID 19 pandemic when face-to-face instruction was suspended and access to teacher-led reading intervention was unavailable. Different distance learning modalities were implemented so as not to disrupt the continuity of the basic education. The challenge with these modalities was not only in dealing with students who were not capable of learning by themselves but moreso in managing students who were already struggling in reading even during face-to-face instruction. In the old normal, it is resolved by having struggling readers undergo remediation or intervention with the supervision of either teachers or tutors; however, such resolution is impossible with the present situation. One of the possible solutions was to solicit the help of the primary school partners- the parents. Using quasi-experimental method with pre-test and posttest comparison, the efficacy of a parent-implemented Phono-Graphix™ program in improving the phonological awareness (PA) skills of children at-risk of reading difficulty was examined. Parents of 11 grade 1 children implemented the reading intervention five times a week for 20-30 minutes per session. PA skills of the participants were assessed prior and after the reading program. Descriptive analysis was used to statistically describe the pre-test and posttest results as well as graphs for visual presentation. To test the difference in scores, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test was utilized where a p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Findings revealed that phonological awareness skills of the participants improved after eight weeks of parent-implemented Phono-Graphix™ program. Results and implications for future research are further discussed.

Abstract

Although there have been extensive studies on graffiti in various disciplines and contexts worldwide, only a few contemporary studies have been conducted on the classroom walls in higher education milieus. As such, this study explored the communicative functions of students’ graffiti-writings found on the classroom walls of a Philippine state college. Utilizing Content Analysis (CA), the results clearly revealed that graffiti-writings had been utilized by college students as their unique means of communicating their personal thoughts and feelings, as well as their antagonistic attitudes toward other individuals, groups, and even institutions which they could not express openly in public. Graffiti-writings had also been used by college students to seek glorification among themselves, to show their intelligence or wittiness, and to express resentment or hatred especially to the members of the LGBTQIA+ society. Indeed, graffiti-writings performed a multiplicity of communicative functions, having anonymity as a very powerful and useful tool used by college students not only in concealing their personal identities and advancing their causes and rights, but also in effectively protecting themselves from the harsh consequences which they might face when caught doing this highly forbidden act.

Abstract

: Blended learning method is increasingly recognized, especially after being used as an alternative learning method during the past Covid-19 pandemic. There is a belief that this method also suits learning in other special conditions, such as natural disasters, distance learning, or other conditions that do not allow fully face-to-face learning to be implemented. Moreover, the involvement of technology in blended learning makes this method more appealing for anyone to apply it in modern learning. Given the promising uses of blended learning, all findings regarding its implementation become important. The implementation certainly has impacts on students as the centre of learning. Therefore, it is also important to consider various aspects related to students, including their perceptions and motivations in learning by linking them to their learning achievements. This study investigates the correlation between students' perceptions on blended learning implemented in English teaching at SMAN 1 Sukaresmi, students' motivations in learning English and students' achievements in English subject. The participants of this study are 237 XI grade students of SMAN 1 Sukaresmi. This study employs a questionnaire adapted from the model of Birbal et al. and Gardner's Attitude/Motivation Test Battery, and IBM SPSS Statistics 27 to process the data. The findings confirm that there is a significant and positive correlation between students' perceptions on blended learning implemented and students' achievements in English subject, between students' motivations in learning English and students' achievements in English subjects, and between students' perceptions on blended learning implemented and students' motivations in learning English. Students' perceptions on blended learning implemented in English teaching at SMAN 1 Sukaresmi and students' motivations in learning English simultaneously have a 21.1% influence on students' achievements in English subject. Given the magnitude of the influence exerted, students' perceptions on blended learning and students' learning motivations need to be maintained.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of the Indonesian language as language use and instruction in English teaching for Non-EFL students in ITB AAS Indonesia. This research is descriptive qualitative. The result analysis shows that Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is a language used and instruction used by an English lecturer. English lecturer uses Indonesian in explaining and emphasizing English materials of grammar/tenses to their students. 2) English lecturer uses Indonesian in instructing the students about giving tasks and preparing for the test. An English lecturer usually uses a mixture of two languages, for example, Indonesian and English because the students are not from the English department, but they are mostly from non-English majors. She has considered using Indonesian based on the conditions and requests of students. Besides, She also translates from Indonesian to English and vice versa during English teaching, so the students can understand what is being said. English can be an international language used and instructed in class, so students will have the opportunity to increase their English skills. However, it is also possible that students struggle to comprehend English said by their lecturers. Besides, the usage of Indonesian in English teaching is used by the lecturer for Non-EFL students to overcome challenges in their learning. The use of Indonesian in the English classroom is beneficial to the teaching-learning process, provided that it is not overused and does not become habitual. When the students are taught only in Indonesian fully, they cannot use and master English. This issue necessitates a flexible approach to language use while instructing students in an English classroom. For instance, the use of Indonesian is restricted to the instruction of specific topics, such as grammar and vocabulary, while the use of English is restricted to the instruction of particular subject skills, such as pronunciation.
