Abstract

Abstract  –  The objectives of this research are to know the types of implicature contained in the dialogue of A Game of Thrones, the strategy of translation used by the translator in translating the dialogue consisting implicature, and the equivalence deviation of translation. This research uses  qualitative method which is comparative content analysis. The data is the dialog taken from A Game of Thrones. All the dialogues in the source text and in the target text are analyzed by using the comparative model. To analyze the types of implicature used Desilla’s Theory. To analyze the strategy of translation used Molena and Albir and Newmark’s theories. To analyze the equivalence used Koller’s theory, and to analyze the deviation in translation used Newmark’s theory. The risult of this research shows there are three types of implicature transference in translation. They are presevation about 129 (96.3%), explicitation 2 (1.5%), and modification 3 (2.3%). It means most of implicature in the dialogues are transfered into the equivalent implicature. For strategy of translation,  there are eleven strategies of translation used by the translator. They are transposition 50 (26.3%), transference 11 (6%), modulation 37 (19.4%), cultural equivalence 16 (8.4%), addition 7 (3.6%), reduction 12 (6.3%), literal translation 34 (18%), explicitation 13 (6.8%), implicitation 8 (4.2%), calque 1 (0.5%), and paraphrasing 1 (0.5%). For equivalence can be concluded that the most of the dialogue reaches the equivalence. The equivalence of konotative 37 (28%), denotative 38 (28.8%), normatif text 2 (1.5%), pragmatic 22 (16.7%), and formal 33 (25%). For the deviation in translation there are three types deviation. The first is the deviation caused by the grammatical differences 2 dialogues. The second is the deviation caused by modulation 1 dialogue, and the third is the deviation caused by reduction 1 dialogue.    Key Word: Translation, implicature, equivalence

Abstract

The aim of the research is to know the effect of teaching method and emotional intelligence towards student’s listening skill. The writer applied the purpose sampling to determine the sample.  The technique of collecting data of teaching method and emotional intelligence used Likert scales or questioners and the Listening Skill test was acquired from the test multiple choice of 20 items. The research methodology that is used explanatory experimental and technique of data analysis that used in this research is regression analysis model.  It was used to know the effect of independent variable to dependent variable. The statistic test used t-test and data analysis used correlation technique and partial regression. The research findings are:1). There is effect of Teaching Method towards Student’s Listening Skill. The result of the research is obtained by sig value = 0.000 < 0.05. It means that there is significance different of Student’s Listening Skill of the students who are taught by audio lingual teaching method and Student’s Listening Skill who are taught by conventional method. 2). There is effect of Emotional intelligence towards Student’s Listening Skill. The result of the test is obtained by sig value = 0.000 < 0.05. It means that there is significance difference of Student’s Listening Skill of the students whose High Emotional intelligence with Student’s Listening Skill of the students whose Low Emotional intelligence. 3). There is interaction between Teaching Method and Emotional intelligence towards Student’s Listening Skill at Private Junior High School in South Jakarta. Abstract

ABSTRACTStudents’ lack of vocabulary and grammar knowledge can influence their reading skill. This research is aimed at finding the effects of vocabulary and grammar mastery on students’ reading skill.  The eleventh grade students of state senior high schools in Tangerang are the research participants. The sample was selected through simple random sampling. There are three variables – vocabulary and grammar mastery and English reading skill. Objective tests were adminsitered to the students for the data. Correlation technique and multiple regressions were used for data analysis. The research findings reveal first significant effects of vocabulary and grammar mastery both partially and collectively on the students’ English reading skill, proved by Sig.0.000 < 0.05 and Fo184.710, with correlation coefficient 0.90 and determination coefficient is 0.809 or 80.9%. The regression equation is: Y = 2.071+ 0.529X1 + 0.414X2. It means that the students’ English reading skill is strongly influenced by their vocabulary and grammar mastery. Secondly, there is a  significant effect of vocabulary mastery on the reading skill of grade XI students at State Senior High Schools in Tangerang, proved with the score of tobserved = 5.263>ttable= 1.987and Sig. 0.000 < 0.05. Thirdly, there is a significant effect of grammar mastery on the reading skill of grade XI students at State Senior High Schools in Tangerang, proved with the score of tobserved = 4.514 > ttable= 1.987and Sig. 0.000 < 0.05. The conclusion is that there are significant effects of the students’ vocabulary and grammar mastery both partially and collectively on their reading skill. Keywords:Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to analyze about conjunctions as a part of syntax in writing an English narrative composition. Syntax is the study of the rules that govern the ways in which words combine to form phrases, clauses and sentences. Syntax is one of the major components of grammar. Noam Chomsky (2007) stated, “Syntax is the study of the principles and processes by which sentences are constructed in particular languages. Syntactic investigation of a given language has as its goal the construction of a grammar that can be viewed as a device of some sorts for producing the sentences of the language under analysis”. Conjunctions are also part of Syntax discussed in this paper. There are also parts of speech. There are eight parts of speech such as verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. A conjunction connects words, phrases or clauses. Writing is related to composition and there 4 kinds of composition, they are: argumentation, description, exposition and narration. Data was taken from 20 learners’ English narrative compositions. They were taken by asking the learners to make an English narrative composition. After taking the data then classifying, analyzing and correcting were done. There were some kinds of syntax were found in the learners’ English narrative compositions, they are: 5 items of subordinate conjunctions, 3 items of coordinate conjunctions and 2 item of conjunctive adverbs. Keywords: Syntax, Conjunctions, Writing Narrative Composition
